I was wondering what other moms recommend for a double stroller. I have a 2 1/2 year old and will have a newborn next month. I was considering the sit and stand stroller, but I don’t know anyone who has one. Which do like best side-by-side, front and back or sit and stand? Thanks in advance for you suggestions!

THis is the one we have now and I love it. I had a regular double stroller before with my first 2 daughters and I hated it. I had trouble pushing it and it was too big for my car. When we had my 7 month old daughter I bought this one and I would not trade it for anything. It came with the attachment to hold the carseat. The front seat does not lay far back but I have not had problems having my baby sit in it.

After a lot of informal market research, we just ordered the One Step Ahead Double Elite Sit & Stand. I asked every mom I saw with a double stroller how they like theirs and the majority of the side by sides said that they were really wide to maneuver easily. The ones that had the front to back said they wished they had a regular seat for the toddler to nap in. The Double Elite sits a car seat in the front and the back converts from a regular seat to a platform. I just like the options and the price couldn't be beat compared to other combos. Good luck!

I LOVE my sit and stand (I have a 3-year old and a newborn). It's great because my 3-year-old can get in and out as she pleases. It's the Joovy Caboose. The one thing I'm not crazy about is the weight of it, it's really heavy to lift in and out of the car, etc. But they do sell a lightweight version (it's just more expensive, about $100 more).

Good luck!

We had a Cosco front and back and hated it. It was so hard to steer! We could not use it in a store without running into things. We sold it and got a Combi Twin Sport 2 and love it. I can even take it into a handicapped bathroom stall with me (even pregnant!). The only place we've had problems with it is in older buildings that are not up to code. It even does revolving doors and narrow store aisles with no problem. I don't recall ever having run into anything with it. It doesn't have cup holders, but I would figure Combi makes other models that would have it. The kids both love the stroller. I have a friend who has the Jeep side by side and likes it. She does have some trouble getting through doors with it. As far as I've seen, the Combi is the skinniest for side by sides. At almost 5 and almost 2 we're still using it and loving it. It's plenty roomy. We also found that our Graco baby carrier will fit deep enough into the infant side that we can use it with the carrier. GL! Congratulations on your soon arrival!

I second the post for One Step Ahead's Elite Double Stroller. You can "grow" with the stroller - infant seat clicks in, then goes to two seats (one being removable) - then your older one can choose to sit in the seat, sit on the platform, or stand on the back as you push. Worth the price and is much cheaper than many double strollers. I like that it's tandem - not too wide for doorways and easy to get through stores and other public places.

When I was getting ready to have my second, I bought a double jogger stroller and never looked back. True, you can't use your car seat in it, but my lifestyle was to use the stroller for walks around town. The stroller I got (an Instep) is just about as wide as a large wheelchair, and most stores could accommodate us. One of the things I love is that the larger wheels make it a breeze to steer, to go over rough terrain (like the blocks without sidewalks in our town), and to go as fast as I wanted to go. I am not a mall shopper, so maneuvering it in small stores was not an issue, and when I drive to the store, I'd rather use a cart than unload a stroller anyway. After my fifth child, I switched from the jogging stroller to one that could either be a stroller or hitch behind my bike, and I love the versatility, but I am quite an active person. So my recommendations are to look hard at a jogger if you have plans to use you stroller for long outdoor walks, walks to the park, fairs, carnivals, shopping that you walk to, etc. However, if you intend to cart your stroller many places in your car or do a lot of maneuvering in tight spaces, perhaps a front/back set-up would be better for you. Just remember, your stroller will be two kids big, whether it is long front-to-back or wide side-to-side. I'd rather maneuver wide than long. (Also, I personally prefer the strollers without the swivel front wheel, because if you walk fast at all or run, the swivel is just annoying and it's really surprisingly easy to steer the fixed front wheel.) Best of luck in your choice.

I loved our stroller, the Evenflo Take Me Too (standard). But we have a bum wheel, and I've heard that is very common. I was told by a salesperson that the no-frills version is made better, and it doesn't have all the ruffles (ick--not my thing). I bought mine online from WalMart. BabyDepot (Burlington Coat Factory) was constantly out of stock because they were flying off the shelves. I paid just $116, delivered to my door. And WalMart had a more attractive fabric pattern, too.
My favorite thing about the stroller is the step for the back seat. I didn't have to heave the biggest kid into the seat, he got in all by himself. At first, the car seat fit in the back and big brother sat in front, although I know that you can hook it up so the car seat can be in front. I just never bothered to read the manual (blush).
Be sure that whatever stroller you get is compatible with your infant car seat.
I have wondered if a sit and stand would have lasted us longer. My 2 year old is still under the 40 lb weight limit (at 33 lbs) but the 4 year old is right at 40-41 lbs. Our stroller was indispensable when the boys were younger, and I'd like to be able to continue to use it, but they're just too heavy. So check weight limits.
And if you can, test them out. Put your 2 1/2 year old in the FRONT seat (they're all harder to steer with more weight in front) and try to steer it around the store (Burlington Coat Factory lets you do this). It's amazing that some strollers actually do NOT turn at all. You have to lift them to go around a corner. Stay clear of those! Try folding them, too, and lifting them. Some are incredibly heavy.
I like front and back. My friend had a side-by-side and she couldn't fit through my doorway when she came to visit. MAJOR pain. Eventually, she bought a stroller just like mine.
A great place for doing stroller research is www.baby-gaga.com
Happy hunting!

We have a Graco DuoGlider and really like it. When my second was born, my son was only 2 and there was no way I was going to get him to stay in the "sit-n-stand" area. I really wanted a sit-n-stand but it didn't work at the time. We have like the DuoGlider - it is a little hard to get an infant carrier into the back seat but I simply removed the snack tray and it was much easier. Now both kids are bigger and it works great. It is surprisingly easy to manauver and is easy to shop with. It has a huge basket which is really nice.

Good luck.

Hi M.,
I had a tough time deciding on a double stoller because there is just so many! About 4 months ago we bought the Graco Quattro Tour duo stroller(ionic pattern). I absolutely love it and so far it's worth every penny. I thought it was pretty expensive ($220) but we use it almost every day to walk and it is so nice! Most of the less expensive ones are so cheaply made and hard to steer. It's still a little hard to steer with 70 lbs of children in it! I was trying to choose between a front & back, a sit & stand, and a jogging stroller but I'm so glad I went this way. My little guys are 3(almost 4) and 18 months and I just don't think my oldest would have liked the sit & stand, I think there would have been some jealousy issues since he's loved riding in the stroller since he was very little. Anyways... your kids may be different that way, some love to be grown up and able to stand. I also just wasn't sure about the side by side strollers... I thought maybe they would fight. Anyways... now that I've written you a book, good luck on your search.

P.S. The only cons would be if you have a smaller car that it needs to fit into... and also it's pretty heavy to lift. It would fit into a smaller car I think... but that's about it!

I only have one, but I have a Combi and I LOVE it!! I don't think I'll ever get another brand of stroller. My sis-in-law has a front and back double stroller and it's so hard to maneuver. Combi has a double stroller that folds up so compact and is really light weight for a double stroller. You can easily attach a baby carrier to one seat and have your older child in the other. Combi's are usually a little bit pricier than other strollers, but in my opinion it's worth it to have something that doesn't eat up my entire trunk and is something I can easily carry around. Good luck!!

M.,

I have a Sit N Stand, which is fine. My 3-1/2 yo likes being able to get in and out, and she does pretty well so I don't mind her hopping in & out. If you do buy one, be aware that there are longer and shorter versions of the S&S. I have the shorter version, which we like. We use it when we are at the mall or the zoo, or something like that.

What we usually do, however, is put the toddler in a regular single stroller and carry the baby in a sling. My baby is so much happier being carried, and it is easier for me to maneuver a single stroller, as well as less space in the trunk. I make baby carriers, so I have a huge assortment, and I have my favorites for different needs. My most favorite carrier is my Mei Tai. I have been using it since DD was a couple months old. I didn't get to use it when she was a newborn because I lent it out to a friends and she didn't want to give it back, she used it all the time! They work great for newborns, though. I still carry her around in it all the time. She is 14 months and about 21 lb, and I carry her on my back. I also can carry her older sister in it quite comfortably for an hour or more. If you want more information about the different slings I make, or if you just want to chat about what kinds of slings are out there, feel free to email me. I love to talk baby carriers!

If you decide on a double, start checking out consignment stores and garage sales. We got a great deal on our S&S at a garage sale - $40! Target.com also has a really nice selection if you want to buy used. They have reviews of most products posted by mamas that use them, so if you are thinking of specific models of stroller you can read up on them and decide which sounds best.

Best of luck,
S.

I've had great luck with the sit and stand stroller. I have a 3-year old and a 4-month old, and our oldest thinks it's so much fun to be able to see around while we're walking! It also allows the older child to sit with a restraint, in case they get tired. We got the Baby Trend sit & stand model - it was the most reasonably priced model, and didn't seem to differ much from more expensive models. I will say that it is very bulky, though, and you need to have ample trunk room to get it in the car! I can't imagine that it's any worse than a full double stroller, though. Good luck and have fun!

we have an evenflo front and back. it is our second one because something broke on the first, but since it was within the 1 year warranty time and the replacement part was on backorder, they sent us a new stroller. a different piece broke on the second stroller, but i had surgery and contacting the company again for a replacement wasn't a priority for a long time. so now one of my favorite features of the stroller-- the front tray with the cup holder-- won't be useable for my next baby. so if you don't want to keep up on warranties and replacement parts and want something that lasts longer than a year, i wouldn't recommend an evenflo. but if you need something inexpensive, i loved these strollers for all the times that they weren't broken. my next double stroller will probably be a front and back (not evenflo) as well because they're easier to get through the aisles with when shopping or to take on narrow sidewalks.

I just went through this. I love the Baby Jogger City strollers (http://www.amazon.com/Baby-Jogger-City-Double-Stroller/dp...) but they tend to be pricy. If this is out of your range (it was out of mine) then I would suggest the Combi Twin Sport (http://www.amazon.com/Combi-Sport-Double-Stroller-Wasabi/.... This also has an infant car seat that attaches rear facing to one side so that the newborns don't have to be moved around too much. I like this a lot!

I have a double jogger with a front swivel wheel. I love it on walks. It is a bit bulky in the car, but I am thrilled that it turns on a dime and has 5 point harnesses for both seats. It would be wide to shop in a mall (but not impossible), and again I love the plastic window in the top so I can see my kids enjoying themselves. Best of all they are comfortable in it and I can recline each seat separately. I guess it depends on what you plan to use it for. For those long walks to the park, a sit and stand sounds hard on a 2 year old.

We got our jogging stroller cheap, btw. We found it on eBay, it said it had hardware missing (one piece, we can order that), and the picture was of it folded up, so a lot of people missed out on a totally great auction. All in all we got a $150 - $200 stroller for $60 shipped. And it is a smooth gliding, honey lock the car because we don't want this stolen, treasure.

I have the sit and stand stroller deluxe that is an actual two seated stroller and then you can convert the back part from an actual seat to the stand when your child gets older. So it is actually both and front and back and the sit and stand. I have a 16 month old and a 3 month old and I absolutely love the stroller. They sell them through One Step Ahead and also online at Target. Let me know if you have any questions on it! I like it so much better than the side by sides because it actually fits in stores and aisles. It's light weight, easy to push and actually not that expensive and it is lighter to push than my stroller than came with my infant carrier. The infant carrier fits great on the stroller as well.

I have twins and use Combi's twin savvy stroller - it is great! It's no wider than a wheelchair so it can go anywhere that a wheelchair can. It also folds up to the size of a golf bag. The only drawback is that you can only use Combi's infant seats with it. For me, all of the other benefits are worth it.

I have the Sit n Stand Deluxe (babytrend brand) it is the one that has the rear seat that can be removed later leaving just the platform for older kids. I have been very happy with it and it is very easy to steer. I know people who have side by side strollers who hate them because they are hard to navigate in small places and tough to get through doors. I ordered my sit and stand from target.com because I have yet to see any stores that carry the model I bought in stock.

I saw a neat double stroller from One Step Ahead. (www.onestepahead.com) There were two versions - one was a double that could convert to a sit and stand in the back, and the other was a "single" with a sit and stand platform. They looked really nice and if/when we have another I am planning on looking at those. Good luck!

I loved the Graco Duo Glider when my older two were little ( they are only 20 months apart!)It is a bit big, but at the time I had a Nissan Altima and it fit nicely in my trunk. I manuevers better than any single stroller I have ever had. I also have a 5 1/2 month old and again bought a Graco. The price and quality cant be beat. I have a few friends that liked the Peg Perego sit and stand stoller. They are very expensive, but they are well made and last forever....Good luck!

I love my Bob.
I have a 2 1/2 year old who likes to fall asleep at the MOST inconvenient times....and the carseat can snap into it with the purchase of the adapter for the infant!!!!
The sit stand is a nightmare if yours likes to "escape" or snooze.
The Bob is easy to maneuver, folds very small (considering) and is relatively light.
I also prefer a side by side so that as they get older ther is no hair pulling, etc!
Good luck!!!!

Just remember that you have to have a big enough spot to put a double stroller, especially a tandem one (front and back) because it's extra long folded up. It doesn't fit in a regular car trunk.

I would recommend a jogger stroller with a swivel wheel, so that you could use it for multiple purposes, plus they seem to handle more weight better. Especially after your oldest keeps getting bigger and heavier.
