Dog Potty Patch

As the weather gets colder, my dog is hesitating on using the backyard to do her business. I'm considering getting the potty patch, but I wonder how well the patch works and if there is a method that you must use in order for the dog to use the patch. If you have any experience with the patch, I'd like your opinion on it. Any other suggestions are also appreciated:)

What can I do next?

My brother used a similar thing with his dogs. He quit using it after a short time. For me the major drawback is that all that urine and feces is deposited in a container. Yes, the fake grass covers it up but the urine and feces has to go somewhere. You then have to clean the container. Yuck!

My brother walks his dogs and because they are outside and cannot go back in they do their business. If you are just putting him out the door then close the door and force him to stay outside for awhile.

I suggest you continue to take you dog outside to do her business. She'll probably do it faster because it's cold. If you start letting her go inside, you may regret it. If your concerned about her getting cold, buy her a little doggie coat.

You really don't want to start using a potty patch. All that does is teach the dog that it's acceptable to go in places other than the yard.
My dog hates getting wet, but I make him go outside to potty even if it is raining.

I taught my dog to go outside in a certain spot by accident.
He would get the idea to go outside, but wasn't consistant. I got some steer manure from Home Depot and spread it on my lawn. Then when he did #2 in the house, I took him and the "gift" he left me and put him and the "gift" on top of the manure I had spread just minutes before. It worked.

He never went in the house again and he went on the manure I spread. I don't know why he did and I don't know if my next dog wll or not, but I'm going to try it. It was so easy and so inexpensive.

FYI,: My dog died on the 14th of October. I sure miss him.

Good luck to you and yours.

Why not go for a walk WITH your dog? Good for you, good for the dog. Walking gets the intestinal system working. And sometimes in their own area it just isn't enough room to get it working enough to do their business.

Just bundle up in layers as it gets colder. I use a Hoveround and go out 3 times daily with my dog. The dog needs the exercise. We both get fresh air and sunshine. And she does her business. It's a win win situation. If I can do it from a power chair, you can do it on your two legs. I'd be willing to trade any time!

And I bought a potty patch a couple years ago. I don't think the dog ever used it and I'd be surprised if my cat ever did either! It just sits in my basement. The dog would mess the basement floor even tho the patch was a foot away.

We have the same problem, our pup HATES getting wet and has a strong dislike for the cold.
Right now I have been taking her outside on a leash... but she poops right in front of the stairs and I would like to teach her to go in one easy to clean spot.

I have heard of people making their own potty patches in a covered area outside and I am considering that... just a piece of fake grass in a plastic dish, like the ones you put under a washing machine...

You can teach your dog to potty there by taking her to potty there (leashed) until they get it. If the poop somewhere else pick up the poop and deposit it in your potty spot, You can also buy a spray at the pet store that will make it more attractive.

I don't know yet what we are going to do.... but I should probably just not be lazy, leash her and take her out...

Good luck!
