If you are anwering a series of questions:

For example:

1) What kind of books do you like to read? (then there are lines for you to answer)

2) What books have you read in the last 6 months? (lines for you to answer)
I have read, Devil in a Blue Dress and Monk. (this is your answer so...)

*so if you are writing your answers by hand in pencil, do you underline the title of the book? Do you put it in quotation marks? or just write the title and do nothing else? What is the correct way to do this?

So What Happened?

Well he decided to underline it and so it looks funny to me because it is a short answer question in which they provide lines to fill in the answer, but I just wanted to know the correct way, things change so much and for with MLA, APA, and what not but that is for essay style, everything I googled gave examples for everything except short answer questions. Thanks for all the advice most of you said underline...

Titles of books are underlined. Articles are in quotes. At least when I went to school. Now ... According the the MLA, book titles are in italics ... Here's the MLA recommendations from Purdue ...

If you are handwriting something then yes, you underline the title of a book. Short stories go in quotation marks. I can't remember what you do for plays! If you're typing something then the title of a book should be in italics. I taught high school English for a few years, but I've been out of the loop for 10 years, raising some kids! So hopefully someone will correct me if I'm wrong!

If you're writing by hand -- yes, you would underline the titles of books. But use italics (no underline) if you are typing.

Quotation marks around book titles are ONLY used in AP style, typically for journalists (newspapers).

Titles of books need to be underlined or italicized when you refer to them in writing. Since you are hand writing this, you need to underline.

Quotation marks go around the titles of shorter works like songs or poems; or chapter titles within a book with it's own title.

If you're writing for a class, definitely remember to underline. If it's just for book club or something, I wouldn't worry about it too much, but since you know what's correct, just go ahead and do it.

Also, remember to capitalize the first and LAST word of the title, and any other words that except articles (a, an, the) and conjunctions (and, but, or) :)

Is this for a school project or writing a friend a letter?

In a project or professional setting - TYPED should be Italicized.
Writing by hand (does anyone do that anymore!! LOL!!) it should be underlined and in quotes.

I'm not an English Major....this is just how I was taught!!

You only underline when it is in the body of a paragraph or paper. In general, I have always used quotation marks if filling out lines on a short answer test or a questionaire for example. Be sure to include the name of the author when possible.

For more help on questions like this google or check out a copy of the AP stylebook or whatever stylebook book your professor uses (there are several versions such as the MLA as mentioned by others..and they vary on recommendations for things like this).
