Good afternoon ladies! Something has been bothering me and I want a outside opinion. My husband and I have some friends (he's know the husband for over 20 yrs) that we hang out with quite a bit. Their daughters bday party is this weekend at a park. They are going to have volleyball, basketball and all kinds of sports for everyone to do. Its supposed to be very hot this weekend (heat index at 100) and im not thrilled about it. Im not a sports person, never have been a honestly I hate being outside. The thing that bothered me as when she called to tell me about the party she made the comment that I need to wear my tennis shoes and to stop being lazy. Does that make me lazy? Would that bug you or am I being too sensitive about it?
Thank y'all so much! We are ok friends not tooo close. Exercise wouldn't kill me but its just so not my idea of fun! They are outside all the time (her moms actual kitchen is outside) so they are used to it. Ill just suck it up a pick a tree and my lazy butt will leave when the heat gets to me! Thank y'all again! Its so nice to have someone to talk to!

Unless there was a tone to her voice then I wouldnt take it too seriously. It's going to be a 100 degrees outside for goodness sake!
I cant even imagine even professional athletes would want to play in that heat!
Go, have fun, and sit in the shade with a cold drink and dont worry about it.
You dont have to do anything you dont want to. And I dont blame you for not wanting to!

Nope. I don't think not wanting to play sports in blazing heat in the middle of the day for a birthday party qualifies as being lazy.
It sounds like you guys have known each other for a while...maybe she was jesting you. I would just let it roll off my back, even if she wasn't.
And to be honest, I prefer air conditioning on days like that.

What if you ARE lazy? Sometimes it is just nice (and smart) to be lazy in the shade, rather than risk a trip to the ER in that weather!
I definitely cannot take hot weather, especially if it is humid! If it was me: With a heat index of 100, if I play volleyball outside, she would definitely have to spend her daughter's birthday in the ER with me!!!

Her comment about being lazy was uncalled for. But, in the interest of friendship, be a good sport. Put on your tennis shoes (or your favorite comfortable shoes), sunscreen and a big hat and go. You don't have to participate, just cheer everyone else on with a smile on your face.

Gee, that party sounds like an absolute blast... NOT! Who the heck has a sports party in 100 degree weather?! It has nothing to do with being lazy, which was very uncalled for - I think it's very inconsiderate to throw a party like that in that type of weather. She shouldn't be surprised that her guests are already complaining. I live in that type of weather & the only type of outdoor party that should be happening is a pool or water party.

I'm from Arlington too- I'm with you- especially right now, it's so humid out there! My butt goes from zero to sweat in no time flat. Playing outdoor sports is not something I'd be thrilled about either! I also hate being outside. I'm sure she was playing around but I'd be a little pissy if somebody called me lazy... not that I'd say anything... again, she was probably just joking. I'm not sure what to tell you to do, but I know I wouldn't go to an outdoor party when it's anywhere close to 100!

If you are not into playing sports but don't mind watching others get sweaty and smelly, then go and find a nice shady spot to root them on! Don't participate but don't miss out on a chance to enjoy others' participation. Take a big cooler of your favorite drink, an umbrella, a lounge chair, and sun screen. Bring a book or a deck of cards. Other's may think it's too hot to play too so you can keep eachother company!

NO, you are not lazy.
I love being outside, I exercise and stay fit. I love sports but I don't love participating in them. I would not let someone make me feel pressured to participate either.
I think the lazy comment was a it on the rude side. What if you participate when you are not used to participating, end up with a sports injury? It's not worth the risk of a sports injury to me.... call me lazy but I'm not putting myself out there to get hurt doing something I don't even like to do.
I'll take the shade tree and cheer on the participants!

The only reason to be outside in my opinion is to either be in the pool or beach. That's it! I don't like the bugs, the heat or sweat. Yes, I'm girlie! No this does not make you lazy but it makes her stupid. :)

WOW!....um, WOW! I don't like the heat either and I am in Texas as well. I would not be playing any sort of sport in this heat and I am far from lazy. Don't feel pressured to do these activities if it is not something you enjoy. I would bring lots of cold water to drink or you will be miserable. Good luck!

Not a very nice comment. It's kinda hard to tell if she was being serious and not sure how strong of a relationship you have with her. I've had comments like that thrown out at me by really good friends and it was just to push my buttons and to get a whitty response back from me. Plus they soon apologized and said it was a joke. If you don't have that type of relationship with this friend, then I can see why it might bug you. I don't think your being sensitive. I say, try your hardest to have fun, and maybe find a good time to bring up the subject about the comment. If you decide to not say anything it might put a rift on the friendship. Talking about it might put a whole different perspective on it. She might not have ment it to hurt your feelings. :)

I guess it really depends on your relationship. Do you all have a fun-loving relationship in which you tease eachother. I have a few really good friends that we can in a friendly way tease eachother about our short-comings.
If that is not your relationship and she was truly being nasty, well I guess I would say for the sake of your husband and his friend, go be a good sport and make the best of it.

I doubt you are lazy, my husband dislikes heat rather passionately, while I am great in 100 degree weather.

If she wasn't my friend, this comment would totally chap my hide. I guess I wouldn't do or say anything about it if my husband really liked her husband, but brownie points have not been earned.
I get annoyed sometimes at people who won't try to have fun outdoors with us but that is during early spring and fall, possibly winter when the weather is nice. I hate, hate, hate hot weather. It's 95 and humid (all this week) and I'm just not feeling the love. No you're not lazy. I didn't hear any water sports mentioned in this summer heat party. In weather like this, I prefer to go hippo and stay wet if I need to be outside.

Wow, what a rude thing to say to you! You aren't being lazy; you just don't enjoy sports, especially in hot weather. If you're lazy, then I guess I am, too.

Ditto all the comments about this being a rude and uncalled for comment. She probably thought she was being funny...not..
And ditto wearing a big hat, sunscreen and I would also recommend parking yourself by the drinks and near the ice and take the role of helping to serve all the sweaty athletes.
One more recommendation....one of my favorite summer games is this....If you have it already.....I take a cheap plastic swimming pool, fill it with a few bags of ice, water and marbles (dollar store). Then people have to go in barefoot and fish for the marbles with their toes. It is the fastest way to cool down at any summer party. Kids just love it.

No, you're not lazy. I'm not very athletic and I hate getting sweaty and gross and being pressured into things like group sports. If I choose to do it on my own because it looks like fun, fine, but I'm not going to give myself heatstroke either.
If you don't plan to participate for whatever reason, leave your tennies in the car and wear your sandals and go in with a grin and say, "It's so hot today that I thought I would contribute to the refreshments today so that I'm not perceived as lazy." Then hand over a bowl of fruit salad or a six pack of wine coolers.

No, it doesn't make you lazy. It sounds like she was trying to peer pressure you into doing something you don't like, but she does. She probably just doesn't understand why a person might not enjoy sports. Oh, and I wish we had warm temps here! I'm trying not to be jealous. I'm freezing!!

Put your sneakers on and try to enjoy. A little exercise and sweat never
hurt anyone. She did not have to call you lazy. That was not right. I understand how you feel because of the heat. However, in the name of
friendship join in. Have fun!

I think you are being overly sensitive. I doubt she said it in a hateful way. To me, it sounds more like a statement said in jest. She obviously just wants you to participate.
