Hi - I have new counter stools and am torn between scotch guarding the fabric vs. covering it with clear vinyl that I bought at Jo-Ann's. Any advice? I never used scotch guard and am wondering if it is really all that magical,

What can I do next?

YES! it works. We bought new kitchen chairs and put it on them as soon as we bought them. I've been amazed, I have 2 boys, age 3 and 7, and they make a MESS when they eat. And everything wipes off with a damp cloth - spaghetti sauce, maple syrup, you name it. Well worth the few dollar and few minutes.

I would do almost anything before covering a home furnishing in clear vinyl. It will make them look like cheap diner stools.

We scotch guard UGG boots and it works well to repell water, I assume it would do the same for any liquid.

Yes, it works. Follow the instructions and do as many coats as recommended.

I had chairs that I wanted to protect. I covered them with vinyl - shower curtains to be exact! And then covered again with material for a nicer look. Once the kids are old I'll remove both to expose the original cover

I would prefer the vinyl over Scotchguard, only because I wouldn't want my family constantly sitting on a pillow of chemicals.

I would never ever use scotch guard due to the chemicals.........google it. Also vinyl may look cheap but with kids (assuming you have some at home)I'm sure most visitors to your home wouldn't give it a second thought.

There are few things that look as cheap and tacky as vinyl covered furniture... actually I would prefer stained to vinyl covered.

So I would say scotch guard the chairs and hope for the best. When and if they get too dirty, just redo them with new fabric.

Good luck.

When I was a kid we used to go skiing in scotch-guarded jeans. It worked okay, but it's not magic. It will probably work fine on stools.

I would do neither....because both scotchguard and vinyl and full of chemicals. Vinyl is horrible for off-gassing.

I would leave them as is and clean them with a good natural cleaner when they get dirty....or, if it was me, I would be able to have something in the kitchen with fabric because I know my kids would never be able to keep anything clean ;).

Do not cover in vinyl. That is horrible to look at and worse to sit on. I would just leave them I. Their natural wood color or stain. No one will be sitting on them for extended times.

If you follow the directions it will work great. Remember to follow up, each time you wipe up a spill.. I keep a can handy, we are a klutzy family.

We also use scotch guard. My hubby puts it on the kids new shoes to help keep them nicer longer. I would give it a try over the clear vinyl idea. I also think that would make them look cheap.

It's really easy to re cover your stools with new material...and it makes your house look more fresh and fun to do this every so often. We have fabric covered stools and I can't wait to recover them with fun fabric! Why they made these with off-white fabric in the first place is beyond me. I wait for fabric to go on sale half off. Take off one of your cushions and take the fabric off. Use this as your pattern. Cut the new fabric in the same pattern and use a staple gun to put the fabric back on each chair. Then you have to screw the bottom of the chair/stool back on. It's kind of a pain but not too hard...just a little time consuming. I did this with my dining room chairs and picked a fabric that is sturdy with a colorful pattern that will not show dirt. They still look great after 5 years. So, I say use Scotch Guard and in about 5 or so years start looking for some cute fabric to recover your stools with.
