Does Menstruation Become Different After Birth of Baby?

Does anyone know if periods are different after the body gives birth? I used to have very short(3 day) period cycles. Now I am on the 2nd cycle after the birth of my baby and they have been so different than before pregnancy. On day 4 and 5 I still have bright red blood flow. Is this normal?

What can I do next?

Most definitly S., I have had 3 kids and it changed with everyone of them, it takes your body sometime to get back to normal after having a baby, if there is no pain, and you feel healthy, giveit some time, it'sonot pleasant at the time, but it does pass. J.

Yes! I however, do not get a period at all when I'm nursing and each one nursed until around 2 years. When I do finally get it back it's actually lighter for me now, but does last a little longer. I used to get really bad cramps and now I don't get any! I am now 8 months pregnant with my 3rd boy. So in the last 6 years I have had 6 periods. 3 between boy #1 and #2 and 3 between #2 and #3. It spaced my kids nicely though, they are all about 3 years apart. I hope this helped, the bottom line is Yes your body changes after giving birth ; )

Totally normal, your body is adjusting to the major change! Your hormones are still trying to balance out, and you are still trying to adjust to a new life and new schedule and new demands. It took 9 months to grow your beautiful baby, so give yourself time to get re-established and back to normal!
(If it makes you feel any better, I just had my 2nd cycle after baby, and it was 7 days long. Then 3 DAYS LATER, I started another period of another 7 days! but Doc assured me all is fine!) Congrats on baby Solomon, and try to get your rest!

Hi S.:
Yes, it is very normal.Your first couple months will be real wacky. It's even a little scarey, with clotting and all. Remember, your body isn't use to ovulating and menstruating regularly. You've gone 9 months without one. It takes time, for your body to get back to normal. Give it a few months and it will sort itself out hun.Congrats on your darlin baby, and the very best to you.

I was very irregular before having my son, and my periods were light. But from then on, very regular, 28 day cycle with a full five day period. I would say that "normal" will evolve to a new normal for you. If it is heavy for more than a few days, i would worry.
