Does Anything Other than "Ferber" Work?

Hello fellow Moms. I need your advice on my 9 month olds sleep habits. Since day one, she had slept through the night with no wakings (I know, a miracle). Until she got sick a couple of months ago. That night, I picked her up and moved her to my bed until she felt better. Trouble is, when I put her back in her room in her own bed, she hated it - no surprise there. For my own sanity, I need to find a way to get her back on track without going the Ferber way (i.e. screaming it out). The good news is, she will start out in her bad, but wakes 3 hrs later and cannot be soothed back to sleep. Help!

What can I do next?

Personally, I would just continue to put her to sleep in her own bed and if she awakened during the night, I would just put her in bed with me. I have done this with both my children from time to time and one night they just slept through the night in their own bed. It may have taken a few days or few weeks, but they always end up back in their beds eventually. Good luck!

Try reading "The No-Cry Sleep Solution" by Elizabeth Pantley.

We've used babywise for both of our kids and absolutely LOVE it! Both of mine have slept through the night since the first month.

The thing is she probably just got used to being in your bed, and that's the only reason she's crying. Just let her cry when she wakes up even if it takes a really long time because she's not hurting. That's the thing to remember is that she's not in pain, and she's old enough to know you're still there. Ferber is a little hard for me, but that's kind of what we had to do for ours when she started waking up in the middle of the night to play. It's so hard to do, but it will only take 2to3 days

The book Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child worked miracles for us. We basically did the go in pick up & cuddle, lay back down at intervals of 5 or 10 min all night long for a couple of nights (I had to look at a clock - otherwise I would have gone in every 2 min thinking it had been 30 min). It worked! And anytime over the months we have gotten off track (vacations, overnight guests, sickness), I go back to that & it works. I did start all this at 12 months with both my kids as prior to that I just nursed them to sleep on demand. Good luck!

I read both the baby whisperer and the no cry sleep solution books as I felt like the Ferber method wasn't for us. I did a pick up put down method (picking baby up when cries but immediatly put back down when stopped) and it worked for us. I didn't think it would work as the first time I consoled my son it was 30+ times before he fell asleep but each time it got better Until we don't have to go back in. He also has a music box hanging on his crib which we taught him to turn on and now when he wakes in middle of the night he puts it on and goes back to sleep without us! You'll find a method that works, just be consistent and patient as it won't be a quick fix! Good luck!

Go to her but soothe her in the crib. Don't take her out of the crib - change diaper in crib, water, etc. She will eventually learn to soothe. Some kids are better sleepers than others. I learned this after two - took same approach with both and my second is a much better sleeper than my first. In fact, my first still wakes up in the middle of the night sometimes calling for me at three! I would just try to minimize the night wakings by going to her; but try to soothe her in the crib (i.e. cover her if she is cold, change diaper, give pacifier, water, etc) good luck!

Also, i agree with the ear infection possibility. I know that can disrupt sleep in addition to teething. It is just so hard to know why they are exactly crying. Sometimes my 18 month old just needs one quick cuddle b/f bed and goes right to sleep. Other times she is cold and when I cover her she goes right back to sleep.

I second CT's response. My daughter was the same way at that age after a bad round of ear infections (7 infections in 5 months, poor thing). We decided that as long as she went to bed in her room, we were okay with her sleeping in our room in the middle of the night so we could all get rest. There wasn't enough room in our bed, so we put her in the pack 'n play next to me. Like most things, she grew out of it pretty quickly and is a terrific sleeper now at 2 1/2 years old. I gave up on CIO after trying it one time and she still ended up with great sleep habits. Good luck and I hope you all can get some rest!
