So What Happened?

Thanks everyone. I had a hard time deciding which one of the suggestions for my three year old neice and son and so ive decided to save all suggestions and use some next year. Ive decided to make a craft box for my niece because she is very creative and to make a treasure box for son for their b-days and for both i made tie blankets for both on Christmas(niece got rainbow, son got blue plaid) and got a play house for both since they play with each other alot(i mean ALOT, they're best friends). Thanks again everyone Im not sure i would have ever gotten them gifts without your suggestions and without gifts they would have dislilked me.

Honestly, hit the Dollar Store. Kids that age don't care about what as much as they do about how many presents. They have chalk, bubbles, stuffed animals, cookies, tootsie roll banks, balloons, etc. They even have wrapping paper, bows, etc. You'll probably spend less than you would trying to make stuff.

My kids always think its great when they get a special pillowcase from thier grandmother My oldest son is 13 and he still sleeps with his. You can get real easy patterns at the craft store. I also like the dollar store idea. We have a Dollar Tree and my kids always find fun things there. They even sell craft stuff so you can work on the craft box that was mentioned before. Three yr olds can have fun with almost anything. Good luck and have fun!

Have you made a doll for her yet and a tea house (out of cardboard and wrapping paper). I am not real crafty but my M. sewed and used to make dolls for us.

Have you made home made play-dough? It may be cheaper to purchase however.

My daughters wanted pillow pets this year...you could make them one instead of buying one....what type of crafts do you do? That could help with giving you some ideas.

You know what happens most the time you give a 3 yr old a gift?
They have a ball playing with the box.
If you have the room, go to an appliance store and get a card board box.
Cut some windows in it, decorate it, maybe some towels for curtains and
ta-da! Instant play house! They'll play with it till it falls apart.

Are you handy on the computer? I used power point and clip art to make a really cute menu for my 3 yr old son's pretend restaurant. It was 4 sheets back to back complete with appetizers, main dishes and desserts. I included the words and pictures for each item as well as the prices, so now at age 5, he is practicing his math. I laminated it at an office store and bought some restaurant check pads. At the dollar store, I got a few dishes to add to the fun.

For our daughter's 3rd birthday I made her a treasure chest. I found an unpainted box at Hobby Lobby and some flat wooden letters for her name and some flat stars and hearts. I painted them in various shades of her favorite colors and hot glued them onto the box. She loves it! It's where she keeps all the little things she doesn't want baby brother to get. There are various sizes and styles of boxes. I bought a larger box and I think all together it cost less than $30. You might be able to get other ideas from Family Fun magazine. They often have ideas for things to make with recycled items.

For a girl: hair clips are really easy and inexpensive to make. You can cover those metal pinch kind with ribbon and add a cute button or flower and you're done! A little bit of velcro (the stiff part) glued to the inside of the clip will make sure it doesn't slip out of her hair.

If you do handmade felt or sock puppets you can also make a puppet theater out of a cardboard box as well, then they have a cute place to put on puppet shows for you and it gives them another gift. :)

Make critters out of old socks... sew on or with hot-glue, glue on felt or other do-dads, old buttons, rhinestones, or using shapes cut out from scrap fabrics you have or even cut off scraps from old clothing or blankets... then that way you don't have to buy anything!
If anything, if you don't have one already, you just need to buy a hot-glue gun. They are not expensive.
And just stuff the socks with other scrap fabric or pillow stuffing... and sew up the end!

My kids, loved getting the sock critter creations I made...
Just make it corny looking or cutesy, it doesn't matter.

all the best,
Susan

You can try to make some stilts using soup cans and some string. Just paint the cans some neat colors. Or make some old timer phones using cans and string. If you can sew just make up some bean bags and create some games with easy instructions for the kids to play.

We did a craft box for our kids when they were that little. Just a plastic shoe box from the dollar store and filled it up with pipe cleaners, beads, feathers, kid scissors, glue sticks, goggle eyes and crayons. And they each got a stack of colored paper. Then we had craft stuff to do all year round. You can get everything for under $10. String the beads on the pipe cleaners turned out to be a favorite- it was a lot easier then trying to get them strung on yarn.
I have also made my kids night shirts- a large adult T-shirt, and then paint a cartoon or their name on it- they always had fun with those(we used glow in the dark fabric paint also- awesome!)
Don't worry too much about it- kids don't- it's just us parents!

Tutus are very popular for young girls right now. You can get a roll of 6"x75 tulle on ebay for about $2 (including shipping). Then you simply cut it and knot is around a elasic band or headband.
