Could be whooping cough; because so many parents don't vaccinate their children anymore, whooping cough is now on the rise. I'd take him to the doctor.

Well, my kids haven't had it, but I have. NO fun. I had a high fever and couldn't eat. I didn't suspect pnemonia at all because I hadn't had the cough in a few days so at the er, I didn't even mention it. My hubby did. They did a chest xray and told me that I had "a big pnemonia!" I was so sick that I couldn't take care of anything and had my MIL take care of my kids and the kids that I was babysitting.
If he's wheezing, I'd take him to the doc. in the morning and he might need a nebulizer to clear his lungs. The doc will listen to his lungs and order an xray if needed.
I'm glad to read that you've been to the doctor. FYI--I would continue to keep a very close eye on him as he could still be at risk of developing pneumonia. My 11-year-old had it a little over a week ago and I was surprised both that it was pneumonia and how quickly it got scary. After 8-9 days of a lingering illness without cough or fever my son developed a cough and a low grade fever. Within 24 hours of developing the low grade fever and 48 hours of developing the cough he had pneumonia. I took him in as a precaution and was surprised by the diagnosis. However, at the clinic his temp was 101 and by the time we got our prescriptions filled and got home his temp was over 103 and he was lethargic. Fortunately, he responded to the antibiotics and inhaler within 24 hours. I've always considered myself pretty saavy when it comes to upper respiratory issues because my older son has asthma, but this one kind of threw me for a loop. Also--keep in mind whenever there is wheezing you should call the doctor right away. Hope your little one feels better soon!
Wheezing is really never a good sign. Call your care provider. While you wait, stick him in a hot, steamy shower and pat him on the back (start low and work him) and encourage him to cough! Avoid dairy.
Keep us posted.

OK just read that it's nasally/chest cold. On top of the other stuff I suggested, I can't stress enough SALINE SPRAY AND BLOW HIS NOSE. If it means pulling out the syringe they sent you home from the hospital with, do it. If he can't clear his airway on his own, you need to do it for him.
Best of luck!
If he's whooping go get him tested for whooping cough! Even if he was vaccinated he can get it. Even though you went to the er take him to your ped today. The er has missed pneumonia in my on every time he has had it the biggest signs with that are high fever, cold that gets worse instead of better, and difficulty breathing. They also told me he couldn't have rsv when he was 3 because most have that before they are year old I refused to leave the er until they tested him and our pediatrician called us the next day because the test came back positive! Unless you went to a pediatric er I would get a second opinion from your pediatrician. Some illnesses can sound different or present with different symptoms in children so it gets overlooked at the er.
I'm glad it was nothing more sinister than a cold! My son got pneumonia when he was 3 1/2 and it started like any normal cold plus high fever. We were leaving that day to travel to California to go the Rose Bowl, but the Dr just thought it was cold. Sometimes it takes a while for the virus to decide where to settle. Needless to say, it turned into pneumonia after a day or so (while in California, but we didn't know until we got home and headed straight to the Dr).
The big indicators for us were a really high fever (104+) that didn't want to respond well to medication--it would only go down to about 101 or 102 with medicine. That along with major wheezing and coughing fits that would cause gagging. But only a doctor can listen to the inside of the lungs to hear for a crackling sound that indicates the pneumonia infection.
Up until that point, every time my boy would get sick, he'd end up with croup, which has the nasty cough that sounds like a seal barking along with some wheezy sounds. It's hard to know when it could be serious or just a cold, but it's always a good idea to trust your mommy-instinct and get your child checked out! Better safe than sorry. I'd certainly rather be told that it's a cold versus being told that I should have brought my child in 4 days earlier and now it's something REALLY serious.
I hope your boy feels better soon!!
why dont you have this child at the ER or DRS????....
Make sure you get him in a warm bath and wash his face with a very wet washcloth. If he is stuffed up, the warm water will help loosen it and it will start running out. Wipe it with the washcloth. Let him sit in the warm bath and play and you keep wiping his nose....
It is gross, but it will help him breathe easier and he will feel so much better afterwards.
uncontrolled (as in, you can't get it to stop) wheezing always = trip to doctor or ER right then/ now.
