I would take him to another doctor for a second opinion. Document everything he does that gives you concern and take it with you to the appointment. You are his mom and if you feel something isnt right you need to keep pushing the doctors! GOOD LUCK!!

K., what kind of doctor are you talking to? Do you have medical insurance? If you do, you need to get an appointment with a pediatric neurologist. They need to do a brain scan to "see" his seizures. That's pretty involved and it is expensive - having medical insurance would help with that.

I have no idea what sipa is, but I am thinking from your description that your son may have petite mal epileptic seizures.

I admit that I don't understand why the doc would say to wake your son up when he is already waking up in the middle of the night. I would not necessarily put the seizure and waking up together, Krislie. It could be that he is just waking up because he's used to doing that. But the rest sounds like a neurological problem.

Find a ped neurologist and get an appointment if you have insurance. If you don't have insurance, talk to a social worker at a Children's Hospital in your area about getting your child some help.

Good luck,
Dawn

Go see a neurologist right away. the stares you see him having could actually, possibly be another seizure

First go to a different pediatrician for a second opinion. Then get a referral to a pediatric neurologist. Good luck and will pray for you and your son.

You definitely need to see a pediatric neurologist. It will give you answers and put your mind at ease. It is possible that his blank stares are seizures - not all seizures involve shaking/thrashing, etc. Here is a little info about petite mal seizures that might help you understand if that's what's happening: http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/000696.htm

Go to a big city with a big children's hospital if you need to, even if it's a long drive.

It is very important that you figure this out ASAP.

That would worry me too. It sounds like your son could be having absence seizures. Please get him seen by a pediatric neurologist and/or developmental pediatrician. Try to get one of these 'episodes' videotaped, so you can show the ped. exactly what is going on. Please, please, please find another pediatrician!

In addition to the other responses, if you can, try to take a video of his "blank stares". When you go in for a 2nd opinion or to a ped neurologist, take the video with you so they can actually see for themselves what YOU see at home.

I suggest you take him to see a pediatric neurologist.

What is sipa? When I google it I see nothing related to pediatrics or seizures. It's the national sport of the Philippines as well as a news agency.

I agree with videotaping the episodes!

Some kids have micro-seizures or micro-strokes, and I know a case where the doctor didn't believe the parents, until the child actually had a micro-seizure in the doctor's office. Then, they did believe and ordered additional testing & got him on some good meds to help with the problem.

My nephew has a form of epilepsy that he would have these blank stares that he couldn't snap out of. It took awhile for the doctors to catch it because it never happened in the doctor's office or the hospital. Keep fighting for your son and ask for a second opinion. Do you have a children's hospital near you? That is where my sister got her best care for her son was at Children's Hospital in DC. If you don't think your son is getting proper treatment see someone else. Your doctor maybe right, there maybe nothing wrong, but if you aren't satisfied, find another doctor.

I don't have medical advice, but I'll pass on something my son's pediatrician once told me. He said, "I am the expert in medicine, but you are the expert in your son."

If you feel that there is something wrong, find a pediatric neurologist who will listen to you. I don't know anyone who regrets a second opinion.

I haven't been in your situation, but I do like the idea of videotaping the episodes.

I would be concerned too. Sounds like you need a new doctor. Nothing you described should be considered "normal". Pursue your concerns, they sound right on...Best of luck to you!

No medical advice here, sorry.
But the doctor is telling you to WAKE him up every so often? That seems odd to me.
All I can tell you is to trust your mommy gut and remember that a 2nd opinion is never a bad idea.
All the best to you & your son!

Welcome to mamapedia!!

I'm sorry that your son is having seizures. That is VERY scary.

Why a pediatrician would tell you to wake a child is beyond me...you need to take your child to a pediatric neurologist and have him examined...they will most likely do a sleep test on him as well - which will video tape his sleeping to see if he has seizures at night...if you can video tape them - that would be great!!

Sounds like you need a new pediatrician. You are your child's advocate - don't take no for an answer. Get answers.
