Do You Slack on Meals When You Are Sick??

I started getting a cold yesterday and felt bad around dinnertime, so when my daughter said she wanted oatmeal for dinner that is what I made (even though we had it for breakfast). Today I feel even worse, so tonight's dinner is cereal. I hate it when I make puny meals like that, but I just don't feel up to cooking when I'm not feeling well. Do any of you cheat on your dinners when you aren't feeling well?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I feel so much better already! I'm glad there are others out there that do the same thing. Thanks, Moms!

Yes definitley , if you are feeling really unwell then as long as they are fed , and it is somewhat filling and nutritious then it is fine , it's fun to have back to front days anyway where you eat breakfast for dinner.

Dear C.-

Of course cereal is OK for dinner. I know how tough it can be when not feeling well, believe me. One thing that I DO try to do is freeze some pre cooked dinners...this helps when I am running late...or not feeling well. I just 'nuke em' thawed...and re heat.

Feel better...and...for the record...eggs, pancakes, waffles...can of soup etc are ALL OK dinner items when the cook is under the weather!!

Feel better!

oh ya!!! I am currently pregnant with baby # 3 and with the extreme heat this last summer and the tiredness and morning sickness I had there were many nights when cereal was for dinner (or the drive thru meal again). We have eaten alot of pb&j's too. But, I always made sure to give a fruit and veggie with whatever I mustered up as dinner. haha.

Don't beat yourself up over it (at least it is oatmeal and not a candy bar! hehe). Hope you feel better!!

I think as long as your kids like what you are making, and it's somewhat nutritious it should be fine. You work hard every other day to make meals, so I think when you aren't feeling well you shouldn't be obligated to go above and beyond. You're only human, right? If you were feeding your kids whatever they wanted every day it probably wouldn't be healthy. But the best gift you can give your kids is a healthy mom, so focus on you!

Doesn't everyone??? Mama, you are sick. It's not something that you do all the time, right? If your kids are fed, then you are doing fine. If you are feeling badly about cereal, cut up an apple too!! haha
(by the way, I cheat on soccer nights too...sandwhiches, McD's, tacos...easy stuff!)

Absolutely!

You shouldn't feel guilty about it either, it doesn't do anyone any good if your sick and feeling bad about serving breakfast for dinner. I keep freezer food in the freezer downstairs just for that reason. I have also been known to make a quick cheese sandwich with some cut up fruits and a glass of milk and whoala...dinner!

Thank God it's not just me!!! I had a stomach bug about 2wks ago and (this is really sad) my 3yr olds ate oatmeal for not 1 meal, not 2 meals, but all 3 meals! They like oatmeal especially maple and brown sugar or cinnamon so i did at least swap up the flavors i made. well, you know how you always feel awful for a day even after the bug passes? the next day for breakfast they had poptarts, hotdogs for lunch (microwaved, not even boiled) and chef boy r dee for supper. don't feel bad!!!!! i usually make a sit down at the table and have family time kind of supper but sometimes extenuating circumstances prevail (like throwing your guts up) so as long as its not an every night thing, i think its fine.

I think you are quickly going to see that not only are you not the only one who does this, many of us are much worse! I pretty much never make a proper dinner, as a mom who works outside the home it's physically impossible. I do my best to have healthy things pre-made, in the freezer like bean/cheese quesadillas, turkey meatballs, but we have plenty of pizza, hotdogs and grilled cheeses. I simply can't pull off making a real dinner. I usually eat a salad after she's in bed and my husband is on his own unless he wants the hot dog or grilled cheese or whatever. So consider yourself pretty accomplished in the dinner making department!

Wow! You made oatmeal? Please tell me it was instant, or I'm going to feel really bad about what I feed my family when I'm sick.
Just throw a few chopped cold veggies on the side and an apple. They will be fine. I've been known to order pizza.

I cheat when I'm sick, and when my husband travels for work (which is regularly!). We eat pancakes, scrambled eggs, a can of soup, or in a pinch - Jimmy John's! They really are freaky fast ;)

YES! I don't want to accidently fed my family the germs that are making me sick. Peanut butter and dried apples sandwich with cheese and carrot sticks makes a perfectly fine dinner and they can make it themselves.

Don't feel bad, take care of yourself. Cereal and oatmeal for supper won't hurt your daughter, but you stressing over having to cook may hurt you.

i usually make a pot of soup on sunday, so iff any of us doesn't feel well for next 3-4 days they get soup. last week i had all my family members sick, so they had chicken soup for days, fruit, teas etc, then i got sick on thursday so i still managed to make another type of soup, though i didn't taste it (as i didn't want to get my cold germs in it) so my family still ate it but saw them putting salt so i may have screwed up with taste :)
but yes if i am lying down sick i don't cook.

Oh yes. If I'm not up to cooking, we call it hodge-podge night. That means eat what you want and get it yourself. For my kids, that means instant oatmeal, cold cereal, toast, yogurt, bananas, apples, carrot sticks, string cheese, salad, sandwiches, ramen soup, canned ravioli, spagetti-o's, easy mac, left-overs or even frozen tv dinners on occasion. A couple of nights of "unhealthy" dinners should not cause any permanent damage. You need to get better and your kids will survive. :-)

Blessings,
N.
