I have the Dyson (I have the Animal, but I'd reccommend any of the Dysons) and I love it! Bagless, strong suction, dependable and easy to use! My only complaint is that it's heavy. Good luck!
I am in need of a new vacuum cleaner for our home. I would like a bag-less type with good suction. Do you like your vacuum? I'm willing to pay more for something that will work well.

I also vote for the Dyson. It is expensive, but I found a used one and it's just like new. Someone mentioned the mess with emptying it...I have never had a problem with it. I have the regular Dyson that is yellow and you just take the canister off the vacuum....stick it down in the trash can and pull the lever. The bottom drops open and you don't even have to touch it except to snap the lid back on.
Plus, the suction is so strong, I sucked up a sock in it once! But...I just opened the canister and got the sock out! I do love it. The attachments are easy to use and it does do well on bare floors. I know they have one that has a ball on the front that I'd love to have....and I believe there is now a canister type and a featherlight one.
Hope this helps!
Dyson ANimal is the best vacuum I ever had.The house actually keeps its shape and I've used it many times the last 3 years I've had it. I liked it so much I bought one for my Mom. We tested it first before she agreed that she needed a new vacuum. She had 2 black cats. She vacuumed a 10x10 area with her vacuum. And then I went over it again with the Dyson. Practically filled the canister up. It made her so sick. She is sort of a clean freak. I vacuumed the rest of her house you could have made 5 more cats with all the hair. Hope you get it you won't regret it. lol
You can't beat a Kirby. You can buy a refurbished Kirby for the price of a Dyson vacuum. Read the fact based comparison between a Dyson and a ____@____.com under their education section. A Dyson isn't even in the same playing field as a Kirby. A refurbished Kirby is the best bang for your buck. My mother's 1990 Kirby G3 is still a fantastic machine. Wait and see how many Dysons last 20 plus years with daily regular use. I'll bet none. There is even a market for 20 and 15 year old refurbished Kirbys. That should tell you a whole lot.
Dyson, Dyson, Dyson!!!
I still have my originial Kirby which was bagless but by far am really happiest with my Dyson.
I bought a Rainbow Sweeper 10 years ago and it still works like the day I bought it. It traps the dirt and dust in water so that you can dump it out instead of letting it sitting and breed dust bugs. It usually lasts for about 20-25 years. So, go back think about this, how many sweepers you have bought in the last 10 years? Now think about how many you will have to buy over the next 10 years. Add all that up and you will usually find it is a lot of money. A truly long lasting sweeper is known for that: either the Rainbow Sweeper or the Kirby. But go with what you think will be best for your family.
I hope you find what you are looking for.

I have the animal bissell vaccuum and really like it. I checked into getting a Dyson but didn't want to spend the money. The Bissell for pets seemed a good solution. I got mine at Target and it wasn't too pricey. I have pets at home and it sucks the pet hair out of the carpet and furniture really, really well. It is a bag-less type.
I HATED my Dyson! And I hated that I hated it, because it was great at picking up animal fur from the furniture, and it had this great, long attachment with a power brush for vacuuming the stairs.
But I got rid of it because I could not stand emptying the dirt container - all this hype about getting all the dust and dirt out of the carpet, and then when you try to empty the container, it goes all over the place. I tried putting the container in a plastic bag, holding it tight, and emptying, but still the fine, powdery, dust ended up on me and billowed out of the trash can. I had to empty it in the garage so that the dirt didn't just end up back in the house.
I traded it in for a Miele, a German vacuum, and I use micro-filtration paper bags - no more mess!
I got mine at Action Vacuum - the proprietor is very knowledgeable, and can tell you all about the different types on the market.
I hope this helps.
I have an Oreck XL. It has awesome suction. It does have a bag but you may check their website to see if they have a newer bagless model. I'd buy this again in a heartbeat. Hope this helps.
i absolutely love my Eureka capture.
We have a Dyson and I absolutely LOVE it! I read the complaints about the emptying of the canister but I actually think the way it empties is pretty convenient. Some dust does go around sometimes but imo that happens with almost any vacuum. Personally, the fact that there is dust in the vacuum tells me it is doing a great job! Most vacuums can't pick up dust and smaller particles b/c they are two light and just get blown around. So, this is what I would recommend. My friends have used mine and almost all of them have gone out and bought their own. A little pricy but worth the investment.
Dyson! Anything Dyson seems to be amazing, yes a little bit more expensive but will last you forever.
I purchased a Bissell Healthy Home about 2 years ago and wouldn't trade if for the world. It has a couple of different filters, and is bagless. The sweeper handles my linoleum floor as well as carpets. It also has a great spinning attachment that allows me to do the stairs in our home really well. We have a retriever dog, and cat so there is plenty of hair and it handle the task very well.
Good luck, I know there are other models - more expensive, and cheaper, but for my money Bissell is the one!
I'm not sure what's rated on top, but I do know that consumer reports said that Dyson is NOT worth the extra money. Go to www.epinions.com and check out ratings from people.
We have a Dyson & absolutely LOVE it!! I have the animal one...we have 1 child, 1 cat & 2 dogs. & it is amazing. I used my old vacuum versus this new one & it was amazing what the Dyson picked up after i had already swept with my old one!! It kinda freaked me out!! :)
Good Luck!
This may not be an option for you, but a Central Vac system is great. The house we moved into has one, and the amount of suction is amazing. I can't believe the dirt the system picks up. Working with the long hose (gettng it out, putting it away) is the down side, but the slim hard floor attachment is like working with a long "wand" around all your furniture, up onto the baseboards, etc. You can vacuum your ceiling if you want, because of the long hose!
When it's time to empty the container, it's in the basement and is easy to empty. Again I am always astonished at the amount of dirt and couldn't imagine if this thing had bags to empty.
I don't know what the systems cost, but I'm glad our house came with one!
Hey C.! You have to promise you'll take my advice. My husband and I are avid readers of Consumer Reports. I don't buy ANYTHING without checking ratings for different products first. All this hype about Dyson is crazy because Dyson gets bad ratings! It's crazy, but out of all the vacuums tested on Consumer Reports, Eureka Smart Boss got the best ratings. It's awesome because it was $179 when I got it, and my mom bought it a couple of months ago for $149 on sale! I bought it at Meijer. I LOVE IT! I can see why it got great ratings. The only thing I had to warn my mom about was that the release for it needed to be broken in. During the first month or so I had it, I had to step pretty hard on the release. Trust me, from a total researcher, get this one!
C. - I just bought the dirt devil featherlight. It was easy to put together and it has 12 amps which is good. It was only 45 dollars at Meijers. It would probably be a similar price where you could get it. - K.
We have an animal Dyson and we love it. We have had it since 2005. I'm looking at getting the hand held we love it so much. Yes the emptying of the chamber can get on your nerves as others posted but if you don't slam the bottom I don't have those issues. But non the less weather permitting I'll run outside to empty it. Small price to pay for a vaccuum that actually picks up everything including pet hair. I wish I had the ball too. But that is my opinion. Good luck on the vaccuum hunt.
Dyson. We have the yellow ball one - my mom has the purple animal one and neither of us will ever buy another type of vacuum cleaner again. I even had a Kirby salesman come to my house and try to sell me a Kirby... after he left I used my Dyson over where he had vacuumed with his Kirby and got more dirt out.
Yes, the Dyson is a bit more expensive, but there are ways around it. We got ours when we found it was on sale at Bed Bath and Beyond and we had a 10% off coupon. We went to Lowes with the ad to show them that BB&B had it cheaper... they beat BB&B's sales price by 10% and accepted BB&B's 10% off coupon, so we ended up with a great deal!
Hello!
I bought a Kenmore Progressive from Sears about six weeks ago. It's SO much nicer than my old vacuum. I have the bagless version, and just cleaned the filter (with the compressed air you can clean a computer keyboard with) yesterday, though from now on I'll do that every two weeks. I use mine several times a week and it's fantastic. It has a dirt sensor that actually works. We have a dog too - who sheds - and the attachments clean off the couch, etc., in a jiffy.
Mine was $279, which is quite a bit more than I usually pay but I was tired of getting vacuums that are good at first then just ok after a month and tend to fall apart. The Progressive is a Consumer Reports Best Buy and I'm pretty sure it's the top recommended bagless from Consumer Reports that was under $400. ** I really think it's the second leading bagless (the other was super expensive) but I'm not sure where I put the magazine.
http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_02036932000P?key... It looks like it's on sale again for $279 from the list of $349. There are two entries, so make sure you choose the right price! I bought mine at the store so I could try it first.
Dyson!!!!!! we have the smaller one with the yellow ball on the back, got it at Lowe's and have never had a problem with it, a year old and still has same suction power as the first day we used it! Highly recommend it!
We have a Dyson. It is the Allergy and Asthma version and it works great. We didn't realize how much our old vacuum was missing until we used our new Dyson.
DYSON animal..all the way! KOHLS has best deal but you need the extra coupon etc to make it a super bargain!
One word DYSON, will suck the chrome off the front bumper.
In your google search type in Dyson Sweeper, and buy it directly from the manufacture, you can get them around 200 dollars cheaper then from any store plus they give you free shipping. Also if you put the canister in a plastic bag to dump, and tighten it around the canister and wait a few minutes there is no dust. I have also used a Rainbow, but the water is smelly and stincks, especially if you forget to dump it. It also rusts, so by and far one word DYSON--lol
I have a regular Dyson- it's a teal color. I absolutely love it and my SIL got one because she liked mine so well. I'm pretty sure the newer dysons have even more features that mine doesn't have. I've had no issues with it whatsoever. We have 2 dogs and I purchased it before there was the animal dyson. It still rocks and is about 5 years old.
Spend the money and BUY A DYSON!!!! You will LOVE it!!
I did have the Hoover WindTunnel and it hasn't been a year yet and it was smoking on the bottom of it. My husband said that it would cost more to fix it. He went out and bought me a Dyson Animal for Valentine's Day and I absolutely love it. It is pricey but definately worth the money. My husband was just tired of buying sweepers that didn't last us a while. The canister does pop open from the bottom and you can stick it toward the bottom of the bag and I don't have a problem with dirt flying up. If you would like to try it for yourself, you can go to Sears and they will put a bunch of dirt on the floor and you can see for yourself how it operates.
Dyson!! I will never own anything else!
I totally agree with Stacy! We also have the purple Dyson Animal and we've been so pleased with it. I think we've had it for about 3 years, and I'm still amazed every time I empty the canister and then watch what it can suck up out of a room that I really didn't think was too bad. They are pricey, but you can use a 20% off coupon at Bed, Bath & Beyond and save about $100....
I have a the original bagless vac. It's called a Phantom. It's the best vaccuum that I've ever owned. Unfortunately they don't make them anymore. We bought a Dyson about 3 years ago. It's a nice sweeper, but nothing compared to my Phantom. I have to move it slowly or it doesn't even pick up threads on top of the carpet. Sometimes I have to go over places 3 or 4 times to pick up what I can see. I haven't owned a "regular" sweeper in ages, but if the Dyson is so great, I guess those just must not work at all, because I am truly not impressed with it.
I recently bought a Bissell Healthy Home vacuum and have been very pleased with it. I was not able to spend the money on a Dyson, but the cyclonic suction made sense. The Bissell is bagless and very powerful. I also liked that I could turn the brush off on my hardwood floors so things weren't just being flung around.
I also would recommend buying at Bed Bath and Beyond. I don't know if all stores do this (I kind of doubt it), but they were very helpful and if I got it home and was not satisfied with it/didn't like it, I could bring it back (I think the time limit was 90 days???). I brought a Hoover home, and I ended up taking it back -- didn't like it and started having some problems. No problem, they took it back and I got the Bissell, and really like it.
That's my 2 cents,
Good Luck,
M.
My 2 cents, but forget about the bagless. It makes a horrible mess when you empty it. All the dust, etc. flies back into the air.
I really like my Oreck. Yes, a little more expensive than most, but it comes with scheduled maintenance every year for 10 years. It is lightweight and works great. It doesn't have attachments but you get the handheld thing with the attachments that works great as well. Actually it's great that it's seperate b/c I can use it to vaccuum out my car as well!
In short, I am satisfied with my Oreck. I think I have the XL.
