Do Ovulation Kits Work?

Has anyone ever tried the "First Response One-Step Ovulation Predictor Test" or something similar? There is also the "Clearblue Easy Fertility Monitor Test Sticks" but that looks like it is expensive. Thanks!

What can I do next?

We tried for 2 years to get pregnant then tried ovulation kits. First time I used them it worked like a charm! I highly recommend them. My obgyn said they all work fairly well and recommended them.

Hi. I used one. It was definitely whatever one is less expensive. It worked for me on the first try. I actually discovered that I ovulate much earlier than the 14th day. I was over eager to use the things so I tried it on day 9 and it showed the little digital happy face. I would totally recommend them. And whomever said their doctor thought it would be too late with a positive reading doesn't really make sense. The ovulation kits test for increasing levels of lutinizing hormone which is the hormone that increases a day or two before you ovulate.
Good luck!

I didn't have much luck with ovulation kits. What worked great was tracking my basal body temperature. I highly recommend getting the book "Taking Charge of Your Fertility". I found it very helpful.

I have a 7 year old to prove it, lol. The way I did it was to print out a temperature chart online and take my temperature BEFORE getting out of bed each morning. Then when it dropped and spiked, I knew I was ovulating. Then I used the test and it was positive :o) It was cheaper that way because it only took one.
Best Wishes,

I used the sticks (all of two) and got pregnant the first time around. Definitely told the fertile days. Well worth the $28.

My doctor told me not to bother with them. She said by the time you get a positive reading, it can be too late already.

Yes I have used test stips from the store and I ordered them on-line for our first child and they really work. You can order them at www.accuratepregnancytests.com and on the left hand of the screen you see LH strips you can get 30 of them for $15.00 or 100 for $40.00, its cheap. I promise they worked great for me and I was going to use them this time but didnt need to! Hope this helps, good luck we are due with #2 in Feb. :):):)
I also was reading the book "taking charge of your fetility" and taking my temp, checking fluid and charting it all. That book is great in understanding all about you and doing it all the "natural" way it teaches you in charting when you ovulate. I did this along with the test strips and worked first time!!

Hi Allison - my OB has been having me do ovulation predictor tests right now - and the first response one-steps work well. I haven't tried the clearblue ones because of the price difference. As far as I can tell they've worked... I found out that I wasn't ovulating at all... :o( I've also tried the "Answer" brand of ovulation tests because they're also less expensive, and they worked just as well as the First Response ones. Hope that a baby comes along soon for you! Good Luck!!

We liked the Clear Blue Easy Fertility Monitor. We had busy schedules and it gives you a couple of days notice to plan the rendevous. If you're just starting to try and you're pretty available to have sex on the spur of the moment, I think I would start off trying just the fertility sticks since they're cheaper. If you've been trying for more than 6 months or so and/or need to work a bit to coordinate schedules, the Monitor is definetly worth the money. Between two monitors, we contributed to 7 successful pregnancies for people who were having some trouble get pregnant. Definetly if money is an issue, check out Ebay or other options to find one used. Ours still had a lot of life left in them!

I used the Clearblue Easy Monitor, I borrowed it from a friend who was done with it at the time, so all I had to buy were the sticks and I don't recall how much I paid, but Amazon was the cheapest at the time (late '05). And I usually bought 2 boxes at a time to get the free shipping.

I've seen the CEM's on ebay, or put a want out on your local Craigslist to 'borrow' one. It helped us by letting us know that I wasn't ovulating. I was coming close, and after charting for a few months, my doc was able to prescribe Clomid. It was just the trick!

Good luck!

I'm also reading "Taking Charge of Your Fertility" right now. Check it out! Very informative!! It helps you figure out your cycle so you know when your best chance of getting pregnant are so you can either have sex or avoid sex those days in order to get or prevent pregnancy. Seems overwhelming at first, but is really very simple. Try looking for "natural family planning" books. I found other sources, but "Taking Charge" was the best one.

I used the Clearblue Easy Fertility Monitor and got pregnant the 3rd month. I had been trying over a year before that finally got pregnant and than ended up miscarrying. I didn't want to go another year, so I purchased mine used on Ebay and in using this I found out I was actually ovulating until day 17-18 of my cycle - not the normal 14 days as they usually see. I now have a very active 19 month old.....

I have had issues in the past since my cycles are so irregular. My DR said the ovulation kits were OK, but I found that tracking your basal body temp as soon as you wake up each morning was more helpful. You buy a special basal body thermometer. I got mine at Target for around $6.00. It is more precise than a regular thermometer. I track my temp and when it rises you have/are ovulating. Also, whatever day you get your period on, you ovulated 14 days prior. An average cycle is 28 days, which is why day 14 is the average to ovulate. Also, when your period is coming, your temp drops that AM. It's eerily accurate. When you take your temp daily and see it rise, 14 days is a good amount of time to stay high and if it's longer than 18 days, you are likely pregnant.

Send me a personal message if you want more info. Like I said, with my irregualr cycles I have had to learn about this stuff. I am also trying to get pregnant. Good luck to you!

A few other women suggested the "saliva lick" ovulation test kit. I would recommend that one, you buy the kit once and can reuse it over and over. A few of my friends utilized this kit and it worked like a charm! Both have beautiful babies as a result. Good luck.

i've seen that a few other women have already suggested it, but you seriously just need the book "taking charge of your fertility" i've suggested it to so many women....i just thinmk everyone should read it! so informative and helpful. i've never used the ovulation kits, but i've also heard about a small microscope that you test your saliva on. the pattern changes when you ovulate. i think the microscope is only about $25 and you can keep using it, so it makes way more sense than the ovulation kits. though i know i'm not helpful since i cant remember where to find this...but i know it exists! good luck! we were prego on the first try after i read the fertility book! seriously!

I used ovulation kits with both my boys since I really wanted to maximize the chances/timing of getting pregnant. It worked both times, first try. I bought one pack each with each pregnancy.

I conceived both my kids using just a plain old digital thermometer and tracking my basal temp like the person below described. The important part is you have to take your temp immediately upon waking and before you get out of bed. Best of luck to you!

Allison,

I have been using both the First Response OPK and the Clearblue Easy Fertility Monitor (the computer where you put the sticks right in it and it reads your fertility). For me, they are very inconsistent. One will say I'm ovulating, while the other says I'm not. We've been trying for 14 months now with no luck. I'd say try the First Response Kit first, because of the two that is the one that has detected ovulation, whereas the other one has not....

Best of luck!

If you can afford it, I would highly recommend a fertility monitor. We had difficulty getting pregnant with our first child and used a monitor to try for our second. We started trying again when my son was 6 months old and were pregnant within two months. Originally, we thought we had some infertility issues and had done some treatments, but looking back now, I think we just weren't in snych with my window of opportunity so to speak!
The clearblue easy monitor costs about $200-250 and a three month supply of test sticks cost around $50. You could also ask around to people you know that used a monitor and see if you could borrow theirs. I actually used my hairdresser's monitor because she was done having kids! Good luck!
