Dizzy Spells

I have been having dizzy spells since Sunday. My doctor can't figure it out. I was wondering if anybody can share their unexplainable dizzy spells and how it was dealt with. I usually get dizzy when I'm lying down and move from one position to another or when getting up from laying position or bending over position. I had my tubes tied so I can't be pregnant. I have 3 small kids and a busy schedule. This is screwing me up.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well since I saw another doctor that said I have Benign vertigo. Prescribed medicine and sent to a therapists. I had my first visit yesterday and she was doing some exercises to help the crystals in my ears position back to the way they are suppose to be. The first exercise I got dizzy and she did what she needed to do. The second time I did not get dizzy the first half of the exercise. I was happy, but as soon as I sat down, I got dizzy like never before to the point that I was vomitting. Needless to say, I ended up leaving on a wheelchair. Is this how it is suppose to be? Anyone had this experience? According to the therapist, this is the only way to cure what I have.

I don't know if you have allergies, but at this time of year, my head gets stuffy and I tend to get dizzy spells several times throughout the day. Just a thought....

Good luck,

I get dizzy spells too. My doctor says it's vertigo. I notice it happens more when I am overworked and slack on sleep or eating. I don't think the two are related, but I just sit down for a while and I'm ok.

Hi Brenda -

The link above will give you info on benign positional vertigo - it's annoying but temporary. I had it a couple months ago, and my doctor "cured" me by doing a couple quick position changes to kind of reset my inner ear. Can you see another doctor? Maybe an ENT would help, since they should certainly be familiar with the condition. Good luck!

There are only 3 reasons I know of that can cause dizziness. Orthostatic hypertension--when you get up to fast from a sitting or lying position to upright - but it normally goes away quickly -- change postions slowly, if this is what it is it will resolve as you move slowly but you should see a physician to explain why it is happening to you. Second - if you have fluid or inflammation aroung the inner ear - due to infection etc, this will cause dizziness with changing positions - or simply tilting your head from side to side. Thirdly, which many people dont know, the vertebrae in your neck - I forget which one - if it is out can cause serious dizziness. I should know - I popped mine out lifting a patient in the hospital - didnt feel anything wrong but within a day, I couldnt pick my head up. My doctor was treating me for an ear infection - when I had absolutely NO relief - I went to my Chiropractor and found my vetebrae was out. Within an hour, the dizziness was going away. Hope this helps :)

Could be a condition called benign positional vertigo. Usually that is when you get dizzy with change in positions like u describe. U can google it.
Sometimes it can be from fluid in the ears -- try an decongestant for a few days and see if that helps. Good luck

Hi Brenda -

I went through numerous doctors a few months ago for dizzy spells (family doctor, ENT, ER, CT Scan, etc) and no one was able to find anything. They prescribed me motion sickness pills, Allegra, Nasonex - nothing worked.

On my own, trying to figure it out i researched the internet. The only thing i could contribute it to was the stuff I was putting in my body. Being your average American woman, I was always drinking "diet" drinks - Crystal Light, Diet Green Tea, Diet Coke. I found a website (www.sweetpoison.com) that says aspartame could have been my likely culprit. Whether proven or not, whether doctors agree or not, cutting it out of my diet eliminated my dizzy spells. I have had maybe 3 in the past 4 or 5 months (from having them almost every 30 minutes, of every day!).

Hope this helps some.

After finding no known cause for the vertigl, my mom's doctor told her to take Mechlazine. It's over the counter and is like dramamine but better. She keeps the medication near her bed so when she turns over and can tell the dizzies are coming, she takes one. This helps her to function quite well. The vertigo lasts up to 3 weeks sometimes. I like what some of the others said about drinking water. Water seems to help most things.

Hope you feel better soon and there's someone to help with the kids.

After my daughter was born, I had the same issue. I saw a heart specialist who diagnosed me with orthostatic hypotension. When you move from a sitting or laying down position to a standing position, the valves that keep your blood from rushing to your legs are lazy. All the blood rushes from your head to your legs, leaving you feeling dizzy. It causes your heart rate to increase because it has to work hard to get the blood back up to the brain. My doctor's suggestion was to drink plenty of fluids and that seemed to help me. But for more severe cases there is a medication. Talk with your doctor about it. Good luck!

Hmm well you DO have 3 small kids! Just kidding. I would keep up with your doctor and maybe ask him for a referral if he can't get to the root of it. Are you eating right? Are you getting enough sleep? Have you been taking any new OTC medicines, vitamins etc? My Mom had her tubes tied and ended up with two tubal pregnancies so I'm not sure I'd rule that out entirely either. How are you feeling otherwise? Any other symptoms that maybe your not realizing or noticing as much as the dizziness? Keep up with it. You know your body and what's normal and what's not so if your doctor can't shed light on this you need to find another doctor or a specialist. I hope your feeling better soon!!!

Brenda,

My husband is recovering from vertigo. Out of the blue he was just spinning, felt the room was turning and wouldn't stop. He was the worst when laying down, rolling from side to side and standing up from bending over.

They looked and couldn't find an explanation, but gave him some antiviral meds and an anti imflammatory in case there was an inner ear virus. They seemed to do the trick, but it can take a few weeks to get over it...he's on week 3 right now with occasional spells if he stands up too fast.

I hope you can get it figured out, I know he was miserable.

Hi Brenda,
Check to see if you are anemic. I had the same thing happen to me last September and that's what it was. I have 2 young kids and I couldn't afford to have something happen to me during these spells when I was with them alone. As soon as I started the iron pills, everything was back to normal and I only had to take the pills for 3 months. Good luck!

Hi there-

Some things to consider:

*blood pressure- have this tested after you have been sitting for awhile and then when you get up quickly and then when you sit back down. A quick change in position can sometimes cause people's blood pressure to change

*any headache's?

*have you had your blood sugar checked? Sometimes a high or low blood sugar reading can cause dizziness.

*How are your ears? A possible sinus infection?

*How is your vision?

*Any other hormonal problems?

And last but not least, type your symptoms into www.wrongdiagnosis.com and see what pops up. Look at this with a grain of salt as you are NOT a doctor but it might just help.

Hope this helps. Good luck.

Brenda, I have three small kids and went through a period of dizzy spells last year. It got so bad that I was throwing up every time I moved - can't do that and take care of 3 smal kids! It has yet to be explained, but at least it hasn't repeated itself. I ended up seeing a neurologist when it got so bad that it caused the vomiting. I am really glad I did because they were able to rule out several relatively scary things that could have been causing the dizziness. If your doctor is not finding answers for you, I would suggest seeing a neurologist just to get it out of the way and rule out some stuff. I agree with the other moms that it's most likely vertigo, but might as well check it out with the guys that know about this stuff. Feel better soon, and I hope your kiddos are easy on you until you feel better! I remember how hard it was, especially at the end of the day.

Probably stress, and being prone to inner ear disturbabnces. Did you doctor check for allergies? I have been dizzy for a good month now, and it was due to fluid trapped behind my ears from hay fever, also it is because I am stressed. Talk to your doctor about prednisone for a five days to open up the eustatcian tubes if it fluid. I know that helps me, and I know that is what I am doing at the end of this week if I am not better. Also, like for me vertigo and meneire's runs in my family, and certain thing can set it off. Also check if you are anemic, and see an ENT. Are you dizzy as in lightheaded, or the room looks like it is spinning, or dizzy as in you feel like the room is spinning, and are having trouble with balance? I hope you feel better soon.

When I went back to work and was working a lot more with computers than I ever had before, I got a lot of dizzy spells - but they were different than as if I had gotten up to quick. It was as if I was staring at something on the wall, everything else would be spinning around my head in a circle. Does that make sense? I went to the doctor and was diagnosed with Vertigo. You have to get a MRI and see a - I am not sure what type of doctor it was - it was 9 years ago.... I am not sure if that helps! Good luck!

I had that back in feb. and I was told I had labrynthitis, which is basicall a deep down ear infection that messes with your equilibrium. There is no cure for it and it can last up to 6 weeks, mine lasted about 4. IF thats the case with you, they can give you medicine to try to reduce the diziness(it didn't work for me), but thats all they can do.

Might be something with your ears (the fluid in your inner ear). There is a scientific name for it - but I'm at a loss this morning. Usually with the change of seasons I have some problems as well until the atmosphere evens out.

Hi, Brenda.

I can think of a few things that could be causing your dizziness. You could have labyrinthitis, or an inflammation in the inner ear. That can cause severe dizziness, even when turning your head side to side. It is usually treated with antibiotics and a medication called Antivert, which helps control the symptoms.

You could also have postural hypotension, which is a condition where your blood pressure drops when you change position (lying to sitting, sitting to standing). Dehydration is the major cause of this one. Have you been sick recently? Any nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, etc? If so, you should have your blood pressure checked.

Finally, have you been taking any new medications? Cold medicines, cough syrup, sinus medications, etc., can all cause dizziness. So can certain herbal teas or supplements, diet pills, and energy drinks, especially if you combine any of the above with lots of caffeine.

If you think you have one of the first two options, they are easily treated with medications and/or fluids, but you may have symptoms for a few weeks, especially if it's an inner ear disturbance. If you think it might be from meds or supplements, you should stop taking that particular substance and see how you feel. If you think it's caffeine/energy drinks, gradually decrease your intake. If you stop suddenly, you'll still be dizzy and have a major headache, too.

Good luck. Let me know if any of this helps.

See a cardiologist if it continues. He/She can do a test called a "tilt-table" test to see if the dizziness is related to position. Many doctors pay little attention to younger women with issues. Don't allow your doctor to say he can't figure it out. Have him suggest someone WHO CAN figure it out. If you were a MAN going to the doctor you would be in the hospital for tests so fast you would be really dizzy. I know. I work on a cardiac floor at a local hospital.

I had dizzy spells at my old job - standing at the copier. I had just started taking Singulair because I had some seasonal allergies plus allergies to the indoor mold we had at our old house. I was told to start taking it later in the evening. That helped somewhat. I ended up stopping the medication altogether because I felt tired a lot and from time to time would continue to get dizzy spells. since I stopped taking it I haven't had these dizzy spells. I feel so much better also, now that we moved out of that house. Are you taking any new medications?

There are different kinds of vertigo, including my own, migraine associated vertigo, sometimes including headaches, but sometimes not. Also related to changes in position. I've always suffered from bad motion sickness as well, but the worst dizzy spells that I've had have been related to what should have been mild viruses, but turned into days of unpleasantness. Tai chi and watching my diet has been really helpful over the years. Make sure you are taking good care of yourself.

I also have this dizzy problem. I was diagnosed with positional vertigo. They have me take Ativert but that makes me so tired. It is hard when u feel like that and have to take care of the kids. The exercise will help once you start to do it often. Hang in there, it does get better!!
