There is probably a reason not to do this, so someone talk some sense into me.
I have shoulder length hair, it used to be blonde but i guess is nore light brown now. I hit an awesome clearance and got some nautral instict haircolor that is supposed to wash out in a month. Its probably 2 shades lighter than my normal color. I have dyed my hair once before probably 5 years ago. so i'm not too familiar with this. and not that it matters i'm 38.
I was thinking instead of dumping all the solution all over my head to try to do my own hightlights. Is it just regular tin foil hairdressers use? Other than being a bit tricky to handle is there a reason not to try to do some streaky highlights?
Is this just a bad idea? it's just hair right?
Thanks guys, I needed to hear that. I have had highlights done at a salon and really wasn't thrilled. And with all the crazy hair i see out there now a days, i didn't figure doing it at home could go that wrong, but orange and green aren't what i am going for so i'll wait a bit and when i get some time off of work i'll just try the kit and follow the directions.
Not too long ago someone on here was looking for help on how to correct her DIY hair color gone bad. That convinced me from then on to always leave it to the professionals no matter how cheap I am.

My mother is a hairdresser and has been "coaching" me my whole life; I've also been dying my hair everything from bleache blonde, pink, purple, brown, black, red, etc for the last 20 years or so.
So, here's the low down...you won't get what you want with a temporary dye, especially if you're trying to go lighter. Generally, it won't lighten your hair much, if at all, unless you bleach it first...which I recommend you NEVER do yourself. It's amazing what colors you can end up with!
And unless you have experience, I wouldn't dye your own hair either...it's very easy to miss spots, overdevelop spots, get your roots a different color, or end up with a color you REALLY didn't want. If you are doing a very neutral color close to your own, it's probably okay.
Good luck! :) After all that, I'd say...try what you want. Like you said, it's only hair. I've learned plenty of lessons about hair and dye through trial and error, much to my mother's chagrin. Hee hee!
The wash out hair color probably won't work to make your hair lighter. I believe you have to use bleach to go lighter which seems like a lot to try at home. I'd at least talk to a professional and see. There might be a way to go lighter and still look good.
I used the wash out hair color to do a slight change and it was fine. My hair is medium to dark brown and I did dark brown, black and a reddish brown and all were only a slight change. The very dark brown was my favorite. The black looked fake but was for Halloween anyway. I had a friend who was blonde and the wash out color took a really long time to wear off on her hair. My sister has slightly lighter hair than mine and did a home highlighting kit that looked pretty good. But she has been playing with hair dye since she was 12!

Usually, they have to bleach the hair first, to then 'take' the color applied onto it... if your hair is darker to begin with.
You should not do this, yourself.
And, to correct coloring mistakes, via home coloring, is tricky. Even by a professional.
Because, of the chemical composition in various dyes. It all varies.
NOOO...don't do it!! It's such a bad idea. Especially, when you go lighter. It's VERY hard to do a good job alone, but to go lighter is even harder. It's very unlikely wash out color will actually make you go lighter, anyway. You'll basically be doing a chemical science experiment on your hair. That never turns out good...
I'm a hairstylist, please do not do this, It will likely make you look like a calico cat with tiger striping and you will have to go into a salon and have it fixed.
I used color on my hair at home, including frosting. But I used a product made for what I wanted done and followed the directions. I wouldn't experiment with a product not made for what you want.
I also agree that color that will wash out will not lighten your hair. The reason it washes out is that it just puts color on the surface and the color washes off.
I just colored my hair for the first time and wanted strawberry blonde to match my natural color (just cover grays). The box said strawberry blonde but yikes, it came out very red. It took about a week of daily washing to get it to tone down. I've decided to instead get it done by a professional next time.
Home highlighting is pretty easy. I use the Clairol one with a two pronged comb that you just brush in. I get exactly the same results as I did when I paid a bundle at the salon.
I don't think you can really go lighter with temporary color. I may be wrong here, but I don't see how that will work by not actually lightening the hair.

I've never had a problem doing my entire head in 1 color (although I always pick a shade close to my own, never anything really drastic). And when I got tired of the new color, I just picked up another box that was the same color as I am naturally, and dyed it back to my normal color so no one would notice any roots as they grew in.
Along the same lines, if you do try highlighting and don't like it, all you would have to do to fix it is get another box of the same shade (or your natural color ), and do your entire head in the color and the highlights would be gone. So I don't see any harm in trying it.
For highlights.. please go to a professional! I am a stylist and would NEVER do my own highlights. disaster waiting to happen!! And if it turns out orange or bleeds, you'll just end up going to the salon anyway and paying ALOT more for them to fix it!!! Blonde boxed color can be tricky too, like i said it has a tendency to turn orange/ brassy! Go to a salon!!!!
Don't do it! I color my own hair and have a professional highlight it. I had highlighted it in the past and one time it turned green!
