Distended Belly on 15 Month Old

Today i noticed my daughter's belly was protruding more than normal. it was not normal baby belly that i was looking at. it has looked the same all evening both before and after dinner. she has not pooped today. at bath time i mentioned it to my husband and we both started getting more and more concerned about it. it definitely looks abnormally distended, and we can't settle ourselves by just considering it a symptom of constipation. is that what it is?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Wow, sorry i hadn't originally stated that i of course had a call in the pediatrician but was anxiously awaiting his return call and was hoping for input from experienced mothers in the interim. He told us that it didn't seem like something to worry about just yet, b/c she didn't have other worriesome symptoms. we did give her a small amount of prune, and this morning she did have a BM. My husband things the protuding has gone down, and she seems very relaxed and content this morning. thank you all so much for caring and expressing concerns!

Call the doc, especially if it looks abnormal, you dont want to wait until the child is in pain to do something. My baby's nugget is larger then the other one and they did and ultrasound but it got bigger so they will do another. Definatley get something done. For peace of mind.

Take her to the Doctor. Its always best to check.

Sometimes, they get gas build-up or constipation... but if you don't know for sure, you have to take her to the Doctor.

babies/kids don't always poop everyday. So you can't really go according to her frequency either.

Does she have pain, is fussier, have other symptoms, having a hard time eating or drinking?... there are so many things you need to look out for. AND it can be anything. But if you don't know what to look for... then time is passing and she may be in more discomfort.

Don't second guess it. If it is something else, you don't want to regret not taking her to the Doctor. Also, you don't want to "guess" and give her over-the-counter things just "guessing" at it either... what if it makes things worse or not?

*Also, NEVER give young children/babies Pepto-bismol (that pink stuff) or other "adult" things for upset stomach or gas... it's not good for them when young. Something in it.
You should ALWAYS ask your Pediatrician first.

Give a call in to the Doctor... during "off hours" if you call the Pediatrician's office, their phone recording SHOULD say who and where to call in case of emergency... or the Doctor will have a pager/voice-mail. I would call them right away.

Take care,
Susan

Get her to the doctors immediately.
Could be allergies, but it is not normal, and if it is constipation, the doctor will recommend something specific for your daughter to help the condition.

Take her to the pediatrician. Perhaps I am overly paranoid because I work with childhood cancer every day, but whether it is simply a bit of constipation, something far more serious, or anything in between - get it checked out soon. The sooner the better. And please don't forget to update us afterward.

The two times my daughter's (now 3yrs) belly was protruding, it was right before she came down with an intestinal virus. The first time she had a rotovirus when she was 14 mos and was so ill she was almost hospitalized. She also didn't have a BM the day before, the intestines slowed down during the first part of the infection. The second time a week ago, it was probably something she ate or mouthed on. She had explosive (lots of gas) diarrhea - sprayed all over the bathroom because she didn't make it onto the toilet. Luckily, she only had the one bout of diarrhea this last time. If she is acting alright, running & playing I wouldn't worry it will pass. Check out this site if your little one starts having diarrhea for when to call the Doc & what to feed her and give her to drink. Good luck! http://www.med.umich.edu/1libr/pa/pa_diarrhto_hhg.htm

well i would have the doc do some tests on her my little girl had a similar thing going on. She had a really bad belly ache and was throwing up when I noticed her stomach was bigger then normal. Took her to the doc they told me she just had the flew. Then had to take her back 2 days later for them to tell me she had a tarratoma tumor on her right overy. so I would call the doc and see if it isn't some thing of that nature.. And now 2 years later she is normal as can be.She had it removed and is a little to well.

K.,

Yes thats what it sounds like (don't quote me I'm not a Dr but I have a 4 year old)...

Here's what I do when Sebastian is constipated... We run his lower back & his calves with lotion and also rub his belly so that it helps loosen his intestine contents... Also, a warm bath helps it out...

Try to give the baby a little bit of prune juice or eat pieces of prune. I cover up the prune juice for our son with the mixed flavors and he takes that but he doesn't like the prunes.

John Pappalardo presented information regarding the Governor’s Budget Special Session (details covered elsewhere in the Update).

Don't give too much or they'll have the runs...

Good luck

plus lots of gas. give her some organic cantaloupe to eat. that should get her pooping again. all that gas is likely making her back hurt.

My daughter is 18 months and we have seen this happen to her several times after dinner at bath time. We worried about it and talked to other parents about it who said that it was nothing to worry about. She never behaved any differently when it was there- happy girl. Though at bottle time she always passed some gas which I am sure made her feel better and definitely made me feel better. I always think it is a good idea if you are worried to go to a doctor but I thought I would share my everything was perfectly ok story in case that helps calm some anxiety. Hope all is well.

It might be gas. If she is uncomfortable or fussy, you may want to give her some simethicone... but contact your pediatrician for the appropriate dosage amount.

OMG, this is not the place to wonder what's wrong, Go to the Doctor, forget mammasource midwifes, we are fantastic, but health is not something you want to play with. Only a doctor can really tell you what's going on. Go now!

Call the pediatrician and tell him. There are many things that can cause it...I was not sure if you meant the stomach area or the abdominal area...they can be different things. I would definitely have the doctor involved...better safe than wait too long.

my guess is that's it's just a bad case of gas/being bloated, but if you are concerned I would call your pediatrician. After all, you know your child best and if it doesn't seem normal to you, then it may not be. Plus it'll give you peace at mind calling doctor ;)
