Hi moms, I am wondering if any one does the disney movie club and what you think of it. I am thinking of doing it because the start up deal is so great (7 movies for $22). I think it is a great way to get some cheap movies and stock up for upcoming birthdays and christmas. My husband is against things like this. He doesn't want to get trapped into something that will just cost us in the long run. I understand his thinking, but after the initial 7, all I have to do is buy 2 more and then I can cancell the membership. That is what I think I should do, do the requirements and then cancell and be done with it. Is it really that easy? Are their hidden things? So, if anyone out there does it, let me know your thoughts. Thanks.

What can I do next?

I've done the Disney Movie Club thing, and as soon as I order my last "required" movie, I send in my next monthly invoice with the words "cancel" written all over it in big red letters. They immediately cancel my subscription without a problem. Then, a year or two later I'll sign up again as a new member to take advantage of that first shipment of movies for next to nothing. :)

I'm also very skeptical about clubs like this, but I haven't had any problems with the DMC. The only thing to be aware of is that your additional movies have to be purchased at full cost - if you buy any on sale they won't count. So, it is more expensive to buy those last two or three to meet your commitment, but overall I feel I'm spending less per movie with the first batch calculated into the total cost.

When you sign up you should opt for the online or email option. They'll still send you the paper invoice (which I only use when I'm cancelling, otherwise i just toss it), but they'll also send you an email every month saying that it's time to either order or decline the featured movie of the month. The email gives you a direct link to their website, where it only takes a couple minutes to log in and select whether you want to order it or not. It's very easy, and I've never had the problem of missing a deadline and accidently ordering the featured selection of the month (which has happened to me before in other monthly clubs like this).

I don't know one darn thing about this club, but I have seen Disney Movie REWARDS and there are points to earn free stuff I guess? I dunno. Maybe it's the same thing? Here's a link to check out free codes for free points: http://freebies4mom.com/category/4-codes/disney-movie-rew...

We used to and I have been thinking about doing it again. Their rules are very simple, nothing hidden like some others. Once you round together the costs, you do save money. Just make sure you return the card every month or respond via phone or online if that is the option. The only bad thing is that a movie may only be $10 at Target for a special price but higher with the club. But, you also get a chance to get movies you loved as a child that are not the popular ones in the stores today.

I've done the Disney Movie Club. There are no hidden tricks. Once you complete your obligation of the 2 extra movies, you can cancel at any time. I agree with the other post that said that the regular price of their movies is higher than you can find elsewhere. Also, if you forget to decline a movie & it comes to you, you don't even have to go to the post office. DO NOT OPEN IT and just write "Refused - return to sender" on the outside of it & put it back in your mailbox. Also - I did not give them my credit card to have on file. I just have them bill me. That way they couldn't charge me for things I was not aware of. I would do it again for the great start-up deal.

We use it and love it. Just make sure you respond each month, or they will automatically charge your and send it to you. I have NEVER had a problem with it. They email you several times before your deadline, and it takes 2 minutes tops to respond yes or no. We really enjoy it. :)

The one time I did a club type thing, what got me was the shipping and handling. I'd double check on the cost of that, because it can add up super quick, and make it not worth it at all.

Hi, M.,

Someone asked this question on 9/9. Here's what I told them:

I joined, got my cheap movies, paid for the expensive ones, fulfilled my contract, then quit. It just became a pain to make sure I didn't accidentally "order" the current selection. These days, I actually can't imagine buying a DVD, with all the other ways to watch movies, like Netflix, etc. It was pretty good when my kids were much younger because they'd watch the same movie over and over and over (you moms with young children know all about this, right?). So we own all the Disney princess movies and earlier Pixar movies, but now that my kids have outgrown them, they kinda just sit there taking up space. I don't know if it's actually worth it in the long run...I think you could probably get the movies you want gently used on eBay for a lot less, without any contracts to fulfill. They keep sending me "come back, be a member of our club again" emails and flyers, but those get ignored...

Hi M.,
I would listen to your husband's advice. When I was a young mother, I followed the same line of reasoning as you did to sign up for 1 or 2 Children's book clubs. I discovered that canceling becomes a long, drawn-out process, probably made so to discouraged canceling! It was a waste of time. I would suggest another way to get movies less expensively: get them used, such as at half.com or places like Graywhale stores, or buy older movies first, such as at Target, where you can get some for $5 that have been out for a while. Another way is by using a credit card that has redemption points at places like Amazon.com, which has bee a great way for us to get books, CDs, DVDs, etc., for gifts over the years.
Good luck!

I belong and it's ok because I'm looking to replace all of my VHS Disney movies with DVDs but the "hidden things" can be looked at as you have to pay their full price for the movie for it to count as your fulfillment choice. So, even if you order one at full price but order 3 more discs at the 50% off price only the one you paid for at full price is counted toward your commitment. I'm paying full price for Beauty & The Beast as my final commitment DVD and it ends up being around $30.00 after shipping is added and then I'm saying bye bye to it. You know you'll be able to buy Beauty & The Beast when it releases in October for about half that price at Target or Walmart.

Never dealt specifically with the Disney one, but other sort of things, yeah. They tend to get you on the other end. They send the movies; if you want you keep them and pay. If you forget to send them back, you pay for them. And they arent all going to be the blockbuster hits of Disney; there's a lot of stuff they can fill your box with. And when you go to cancel, it's a lot more effort that "just cancel anytime" makes it sound.

They also tend to charge up the wazoo for shipping. And then if you send a movie back, do you ship or do they?

In the long run, you really dont get much better of a deal.

Hi M., I took advantage of their great start up offer too - I had 2 years to complete my contract with them (I had to purchase an additional 4 movies at regular price). It wasn't too bad, my biggest problem was remembering to go in and decline the featured offer every month. They do get you on the shipping, and their regular club prices are often higher than you'll find the movie at Target or Walmart. I also noticed that they tend to be slower on releasing new movies, so most of what I ordered from them was older movies or tv series. Overall, I think I'd probably do it again - especially since the movies I got in my startup offer (5 movies for $1 plus 1 @ half price) kind of balanced out the overall price I paid for the other 4 selections :o)

Oh! I forgot to add - if you do accidently forget to decline the featured title - DO NOT OPEN IT! Take it into the post office, tell them you were shipped something you did not order; as long as it has not been opened, you will not be charged for shipping it back. It will take the club about 2-3 weeks to show that it was returned. I think reversing the charges to your credit card will take about that long as well (if you have a credit card on file) - mine had expired, so they shipped the movie and the bill, and received both back, I was never charged.

Disney is in the business to make a profit. I'm not a member of the Disney Movie club. I read the very fine print of all the movie or book clubs. All of them sell you the first two or three or X number of movies very cheap. They all come with the requirement that they send you notice of the next movie or book that you have to buy at full retail for. If you don't say "No", they will send you the movie automatically and then you have to pay to send it back. If you don't get thier notice, or they don't get your "No" notice back, they will send you the next movie AND charge you for it.

Its amazing that they can charge your credit card and it appears on your bill within 24 hours, but it takes at least two months to get the credit back against the charge. In the meantime you get stuck with the interest.

Often times you can get the movies used much much cheaper on Amazon than you can get them through the movie club. Look at the fine print to discover how much you are paying for shipping and processing. A lot of times the companies are covering their costs of what they send you in the "processing and handling" charge.

If money and costs aren't important, Join the club. Good luck to you and yours.
