I think we're in the market for a new dishwasher. Any brands, models you love/hate? Any features you love? For example, if the utensil tray is in the door -- does that get your utensils as clean as if they are in the "bottom tray/cart" ? Thx!

What can I do next?

I've had several over the years and now have a Bosch. I will never buy any other brand. I love my Bosch.

I like the kind with a grinder in the drain, rather than European style filters. They are louder and less energy efficient, but they also work better to clean dishes.

We just got a Whirlpool, and we specifically sought out one with the silverware tray in the door. It's uncanny how much room it saves, which means less loads throughout the week. As long as you don't overload it, I think the silverware gets just as clean.

I love our LG but O. feature I miss is the wash delay. It was nice to be able to set it to wash while we were all sleeping.
If your kids are young, the hidden ( top of the door ) buttons are nice, too.

The things our new dishwasher is missing are a "rinse only" setting and a cycle timer/countdown. Sometimes there are only a few dishes at the end of the night, not enough to run, but I miss being able to at least rinse them all with hot water and not have stinky dishes in the morning. Without a cycle timer/countdown, we have had to clock time our cycles, so we know how long it takes for a load of dishes to run and how much longer we have until it's done. I miss just being able to glance at the dishwasher and see how much longer it will take.

I recommend Bosch brand. Our much older friend had much experience with different brands to save money but ultimately went with the Bosch. The others gave her much grief, breaking and such. She told us to go straight to the best. We bought Bosch with a stainless steel interior. The top rack adjusts about an inch up/down to adjust for height of top rack items. There's a separate row on the side above cup area that is especially for knives and this makes it very convenient. Other regular silverware can either go in the lower silver basket or top rack silver basket. Both area removeable. Definitely get the hidden buttons. We love our Bosch and no problems.

We bought a new dishwasher last year. (We bought a new house and my husband promised me anything I wanted in the kitchen!) I did lots of research on all my appliances. I almost bought a Bosch, but was told by several friends as well as the repair guy that it is very expensive to fix and harder to get the parts. So, I decided to buy a top of the line Maytag. It was slightly cheaper that the Bosch, although that was not a factor. I love my dishwasher! I do not want to wash my dishes before I wash them in the washer. To me that defeats the purpose! Sometimes I even only partially scrape them! It has handled everything I have thrown at it! (And it has been a lot) We had a Maytag before this one that was good, but not like this! It lasted forever. Hopefully this one will too. It has the stainless interior (Important for getting it nice and hot.) The silverware basket can be placed anywhere in the unit and it gets clean. I usually keep it in the front on the bottom. It has the shelf in the top rack for knives as well as clips to hold small items or knives. It was important to me that it not have a 'water tower' in the middle of the bottom rack so I could fit my pots and pans in, as well as large loads. It has the food grinder, as it not at all loud. (I actually have never heard it!) Only thing I don't like...no timer or "count down." I never know how close it is to being done! It was rated energy star. I am very happy with it. Hope that helps. :)

When I replaced mine a year ago, I had to buy "last year's model" to get a food grinder. I never bought one without a food grinder because I do not believe in washing my dishes before putting them in the dishwasher. I was told that the food grinders went by the wayside because of sound ratings and possibly energy efficiency.

The new one did have the silverware on the door to give more space for dishes. With the amount of silverware we 'cram' in there, I did not feel that it could get as clean because of how the silverware would naturally nest. I ended up taking the silverware tray out of my old dishwasher and letting it eat up an entire row so that I had peace of mind that my silverware was getting clean.
