We got the vtech digizoom after friends recommended it. It is great - intuitive, easy to use. The kids love it!
My almost three year old LOVES to take pictures. We gave her our old digital camera, but its our "old one" for a reason. The buttons get stuck, the lens doesnt always open, the screen only works when it wants to, etc. She gets very frustrated that it doesnt always work, and the thing eats batteries.
I have seen digital cameras geared toward kids. Fisher-Price, for example, has that kid-proof, water-proof digital camera. But, it comes with a $50 price tag. OUCH!! Anybody have one? Is it really worth it? For a 3 year old????
What about a cheaper version? Any recommendations?

Hi Crystal,
We have the Fisher Price camera and it has been great. in my opinion it was worth the money. the camera is very easy to use, especially for little hands to hold. you can drop it and it does not break. it takes fairly good pictures too.
the down side.... the screen on the back is hard to see. you really can not tell if the picture is good until you upload it to your computer. you also need to make sure that you hold the camera still when photographing you it can blurr.... but then again that can happen with lots of cameras.
we have had no mechanical problems with ours and have had it for 3 years now. my sister had one and did experience mechanical problems. she contacted fisher price directly and they replaced her camera for free , no questions asked, so it is nice to know that they stand behind their product and have good customer service
I hope this helps

We just bought the V-tech Kidizoom for our son's 3rd birthday. He loves it! It takes pretty nice pictures and has lots of cute kid-friendly options (my son's favorite option is adding bunny ears and pig noses to people's faces!) It seems very durable so far. I think it goes for around $50-60 normally, but I did find it on sale at Toys R Us for $40. Well worth it :)
I would just look for a not-necc-"child oriented"-camera on ebay. That way you know it will at least take non-terrible pictures.
I bought a Vtech from radio shack for $25. It also has games, and some border features. It's for kids, and it's a really good deal.
I would suggest not getting any of the "kids" cameras. They may be OK as far as durability, but they all have low quality pictures. In terms of megapixels, these are generally all less than 1 megapixel. You need at least 2 just for a decent 4x6 picture. But I would suggest 3 or higher. Get a regular small pocket type digital rated at 3 or more megapixels. If you supervise use & care, your child will learn how to take care of it. I got one 2yrs ago for my daughter when she turned 4, & she still has it & uses it. If you check Walmart or Target, you can get a decent camera for $50. Only other option is to get a disposable film camera & get a photo CD with the pictures.
Hi Crystal,
Before Hanukkah, I did a lot of research about kid-friendly digital cameras. In short, Consumer Reports said you're better off buying your daughter a regular, basic digital camera rather than the ones made for kids. The kid ones produce grainy photos that aren't worth keeping. If that's okay with you, then just get the least inexpensive kid camera you can find.
I found the Fp kids camera on ebay for around 1/2 price! My daughter loves it!She was 4 when we gave it to her, but my 2 1/2 yro loves it too! which ever you choose, make sure you really check it out first. most of the ones we looked at either didn't have a screen or it was so small or poor in quality that it wasn't worth it! Also, we invested in a battery/recharger system, about $2o. It was so worth it foe all the batteries we go through...lots of toys!
we have it. sooo worth it. actually we have the vtech...its a fantastic multipurpose...it takes vidoe and stills and it has a game son it to play...there are funny templates they can add to the pics like bunny ears or a pig snout and my son just laughs and laughs....my oldest is 6 and has had it for 3 years....its only encouraged his love of photography. he oloves it. well worth the investment.it may be cheaper than 50 now or perhaps u could find one on ebay some child has outgrown.
u wont regret the purchase.
The fisher price one sucks unless there really really bright lighting, like outside, then it is actually no too bad. HOWEVER, my son takes hundreds of pictures of everything.....his shoes, a toy on a shelf, a picture of the tv (you get it). He LOVES IT-he can even tell what most of the pictures are! We don't even bother with transferring anything to the computer to actually use. It is easy for him to use, even to delete any pictures he does not want.
All the kids ones we've tried have been trash. I strongly suggest you look up the reviews on Amazon.com. I still have not found a decent child's camera. I let my daughter use our "old" one also until I find something that she can have for herself.
Hi,
I bought the Frisher camera in Costco and it costed me around 32 dollars. My son does not like it that much. ( He is three years old) The pictures are poor quality. I was very upset about that. (for the price) I have to say that my old digital camera worked better for him. He loves taking real pictures and it is easier to use than the Fisher price one. And the pictures are so much bette quality!
My kids love the Fisher Price one - it's durable and takes decent pictures for what it is. The screen is small, but they're toddlers! The buttons are nice and large and I think it's a great toy. So do they.
Don't buy the Fisher Price one. Although it is durable, the pictures are very shaky at best. My daughter, who takes good pictures on my regular digital camera, can't get a good shot with the Fisher Price one. Even the screen that they use to center their picture is fuzzy. It's definitely an expensive toy.
My 2 year old, who doesn't care about photography, just copying his sisters, is happy with it, but that's because he's just going through the motions. If she likes to look at her pictures after she snaps them, she'll get frustrated.
You might do better buying one of those CVS brand digital cameras. I don't think they are as expensive as the Fisher Price one.
That Fisher Price camera is a piece of garbage!!! My kids each got one for Christmas a couple of years ago....the view screen is ridiculously small and the clarity of the pictures is so horrible that when you view them on that screen you can barely tell what you took a picture of....don't waste your money!
Hi Crystal
We use the Vtech Kidzoom, it's very durable and lots of features- my daughter loves it. Definitely better to use rechargable batteries though!
My little guy has the FP one and I agree that it is too expensive. It was a gift from his grandparents. It is easy to use except that it is very heavy. The picture quality is very poor in my opinion. VERY low light. It is more of a toy than anything.. Once he saw the pictures he took next to the ones from our family digital camera, he basically lost interest in it. I would suggest getting a cheap adult digital camera for him to play with. My teenage niece has a $20 one with better photo quality than the FP. Just make sure that she only uses it on the bed or a carpeted area.
My daughter has a Disney Hannah Montana camera that was about $25. It takes really good pictures. My only complaint is that the screen is small and pictures appear darker than they are on the computer.

We have the Fisher Price camera. We have had it for 2 years now and it survived. It's great that you can transfer the pics to the computer. My little one loves that. She is 4 /12 now and takes pictures like crazy. She can work the camera herself and knows how to delete pics herself too. I would recommend it because if it can survive my daughter dropping it all the time including downstairs...it is good. Pictures come out ok on the computer but sometimes they could look dark on the camera screen. It is a Kid camera so it is not going to be great digital quality. Great for kids!
we have the v-tech digital camera. can take pictures, videos and a few games. we've had it for a few years so it's been dropped many, many times and still works. when we got it, it was about $50. well worth it!
We purchased the Fisher Price one 3 years ago for my (then 3 yo) son. The only thing we've had to do to it is replace the batteries (and less frequently than we replace them on OUR camera...). It's durable (stands up to two boys), takes pretty good pictures in the right conditions, and he's still using it 3 years later (and his brother, now 4, also uses it).
I have a daughter that is 4 and she loves to take pictures too. I was thinking about getting that digital camera from F.P. as well. I bought her the store brand onedisposible cameras( I think it was 2 for 10.00) and she liked it. We would take it out when she went to the park or a friends party and she was the life of the party taking pictures. We take them to the photo lab and she put her name on it( I have a nice drugstore guy that puts up with our ritual). She loves getting her pictures back and seeing what she did.
Granted its not the instant gradification that comes with a digital camera but I think its the best for right now. Trusst me you will feel a lot better about her losing or breaking a 5.00 camera over a 50.00 one. seriously
