Did Your Little One Cry During Teething?

Hi Moms,
My 7 month old son got his first two teeth on the bottom just one week shy of turning four months old. Since then he hasn't developed any more, however, in the last three days he has started putting EVERYTHING in his mouth again....his fingers, toys, spoons, chewing on his bottle and on my shoulder and fingers, so I think he is teething, however, he has been crying in the mornings at daycare and the teacher asked my husband this week if we had called the doctor since he was crying so much in the morning the last three days, which unnerved my husband a little since we first time parents. He is not running a fever and is not fussy at all in the afternoons or evenings so my gut tells me he's just fussy because his teeth are hurting him. We use teething tablets and tylonol and they seem to do the trick, but I just wanted some reassurance. I've already taken him to the doctor once when there wasn't anything wrong with him because the daycare suggested I get him checked out for an ear infection, which he didn't have. I know the daycare just has to be sure and alert the parents of everything, even changes in a child's behavior, but I really think he's just teething. I've rubbed my finger along his gums and while I don't think I feel anything yet, I can't guarantee I know what I am feeling for...do you think its teething?

What can I do next?

It's very normal to cry when they are teething! Try taking a hand towel, get it wet and put it in the freezer. Your little one will probably love chewing on it! Good luck!!!

The first 2 teeth on the top where HORRIBLE for my son (he's almost 5 and I vividly remember it), and for us! He was OK during the day and miserable at night so I would think it wouldn't be abnormal for your's to be fussier during the day. Also, at daycare there are kids to distract him & in the evenings he's happy to see you and hungry. I know my son would be a lot more whiney, tired, what have you after I picked him up from the sitters because he would watch her son (4 years older) all the time.

Could be teething. mine were ALWAYS fussy and feverish when teething. Is he being comforted at the daycare? Do they give him the medicine like you do at home? I think if it were his ears he would be fussy all day, not just in the morning. Maybe the night time doses of medicine are wearing off. Is he still eating and drinking? My children's first sign of an ear infection was poor appetite and no other symptoms. Then wham, fever. I learned that when the appetite slacked off, they did indeed have an ear infection. But from what you described it sounds like Momma knows best. He is probably teething. If he is teething and cries only in the morning when dropped off, I would say he doesn't want you to leave since he doesn't feel well and wants to be comforted by his mom and dad. could be that simple.

I know exactly what you are going through!! The teething tabs and tylenol are both good to use, but you might also get some teeth swabs put out by Orajel. They look like Q-tips. You just break the end off that has the little red lines on it, blow gently into the open end to get the medicine to go down to the other end, and swab his little gums. This product was a real life saver for me, and I will continue to use them. Although I am no expert, what you have described does sound like teething, so I think you are on the right track. Good luck to you, and give the swabs a try. You can even send them to daycare with him so that they can treat his gums with them if he does seem to be having pain.

Yes, he's in teething pain, bless him.

My dd is an absolute wonderful baby - never, ever cries, almost scary.

But when she was going through that little spell - just like your son, right after she got the bottom two teeth, she was crying a painful cry all the time and wanted to eat, chew EVERYTHING in pure desperation.

What helped us was Orajel. Did you try that yet?

Good news is that it doesn't last long.
