E.S.
With my first pregnancy I had it only from my belly button down. With this pregnancy I have it starting almost at the top of my chest and all the way down. Both babies were girls.
I know i know,,,,,,,,,not a very important question.
I know its called "linea nigra" and i know it comes from having dark skinned ancestry (for me its Comanche) But im totally not getting it this time, im over 6 months pregnant and i had it by 5 months the first two times i was pregnant. Its absence is baffling me. Im not concerned im just curious.
Did you get that brown line?
Did you have it all of your pregnancies?
What the heck do you think is the purpose of it?
estrogen huh?.......maybe thats why im not getting it, this is my first boy. As far as the women who are pale and getting it...........me too, im very pale, not a ginger or anything but im very white. I read that when this happens it means most likely native american ancestry.

I never got it, but my sister did, and she is much darker than I am. My sister in law had one with her twins, and she has very pale skin.
I had it most of the pregnancy with my first and got it very late in my second pregnancy. Both boys. I've never heard anything about ancestry. I am Italian but not dark skinned by any means.
Nope... didn't with any of my 3 pregnancies.
Did not get the brown line with my one (and only) pregnancy.
Well I am almost 100% Irish (pale and dark brunette) and got it with each pregnancy, but not until the last few months.
I had it with my first two but I am now 25 weeks with my third and no sign of it yet.
I got it bad with my first son born last yr but im currently 7mths pregnant and i cant see it hardly at all but it never totally faded bc i got pregnant again but im fine with not having it this time
I'm white as white can be and I got it with both of my pregnancies. It took a year for my 2nd one to go away. :)
Had it with baby #1, but not with current pregnancy (8 mos along).
I had a barely visible line with 1 or 2 of my pregnancies. Showed up very late and faded very quickly. It appears due to the high levels of estrogen during pregnancy. The estrogen makes the pigment in the skin darker, it is also what causes the areolas to darken. Many women see a darkening of moles or get melasma ("the mask of pregnancy") in which case they get dark blotchy patches on their face. Some women even get melasma with birth control pills. The visible changes are more common in darker skinned women because they have more pigment to begin with. I think the "purpose" has more to do with the darkening of the nipple area so the baby can better visualize his/her "target". The linea nigra is just a side effect.
Some women don't respond as strongly to shifts in hormones once they have been through a pregnancy or two. So maybe your body is just more familiar with the high levels and not responding as dramatically. good luck with the rest of your pregnancy.
ETA: I have never heard the Native American thing. As an OB nurse and midwife I have seen many pregnant women and have seen poeple of all ethnicities and colors that get it and others that don't. I have noticed it more with darker skinned women (as I mentioned before), so it is likely that it is more common among Native Americans to get it than to not get it. But it can certainly show up on any pregnant woman regardless of heritage.
I had it with the first and not with the second.
nope, I didn't get it!
I didn't get this with either of my pregnancies, both boys. We do have Native Canadian ancestry, as well as Italian, Scotch, Irish and Acadian. From what I've read it seems like it has to do with hormones and your natural pigmentation.
I did, hubs called it my speed stripe. It had a curl to it too. go figure.
I only had it w/ my 3rd & last pregnancy. It lasted almost a year after delivery.
Nope. No line, no stretch marks. I got pretty lucky!
I got it with both of mine. I thought I wasn't going to get it with my second, but it showed up around the 6 month mark. I STILL have it and my son is 8 months old. I wish I'd never gotten it. It's so ugly!! LOL!
I did not get it until i was in my last couple months or last month of pregnancy. I got it both times (boy and girl) with my boy i had to scrub it off my belly button each shower. like it pealed off!?!?!? with my daughter it just fadded away? i dont know much about it but thought it was silly . i am WHITE like my brother thought i was wearing pink socks with my shoes...nope thats my skin! one of my brothers is very dark brown ppl think he is mexican. we have Indian in our blood...but very little.
I had it during my first pregnancy (Belly and even in my legs). But didnt get it during my second pregnancy.
I got it with my first pregnancy and I am pale skinned. I am of basque descent(Spanish French). My second pregnancy wich was also a girl I didn't get it at all during pregnancy but after I delivered I noticed a line. So crazy how different each one can be.
I'm very light-skinned and I had it with both. It was darker with the first one though. I loved it and missed it when it was gone.
No idea why it happens.
I'm pretty darn pale, german and scottish descent. Had a boy. Did NOT have the line.
I had it w my first girl and just barely with my 2nd girl. My first I was preg throughout the summer & got lots of sun & was really tan. 2nd girl was of throughout winter....I am olived skin & totally expected it to come around again. I did get mild malasma the 2nd time & not at all the first, which is weird to me! ;)
