Hormonal birth control is a migraine trigger for me. My gyn is aware of this and works with me on this.
Headache is a side effect of the mirena. But if it's severe then you need to call the dr.
Sorry if this question is redundant. I know there are a lot of previous posts about Mirena but none that I saw that spoke specifically to headaches.
I had the Mirena put in yesterday. All went well. Cramping has been uncomfortable but manageable, but the headache I am having is awful. I am somewhat prone to headaches I believe but I did not expect to have such a bad one about 24 hours after placement. Advil isn't touching it. I am 46 and decided to try this method to help with heavy periods/anemia.
For anyone who did experience headaches with Mirena, did they get better? If so, how long did you suffer before your body adjusted? Anyone have to remove the IUD because of painful headaches?
Thank you!!
Thanks for your input. I did call the nurse line and they left a message for my doctor. According to the doctor, what I am experiencing seems in the realm of normal but was told to go to the ER if I have vision disturbances, fainting, or headache so severe that medication does not help at all. They said that the side effects should level out over time but I made an appointment to come in in several days (wish I could get in sooner!) as I am very much leaning toward having it removed. I am experiencing a lot of side effects in addition to the headaches and I just don't think this route is the right one for me.

Are you sensitive to light/sound or feeling nauseous?
I have a mirena and never had problems when they inserted it. I do have migraines.
My mirena didn't affect them one way or the other.
I noticed in a previous post of yours your daughter has sinus issues before her periods. That's how my migraines presented when I was a teen. It felt like I had sinus pressure. They misdiagnosed my in my thirties as having allergies). I have hormonal migraines. Migraines tend to run in families.
For some women, birth control can make migraines worse. I would keep a log - they will want to see it. Track your cycle/headaches and also what you eat/drink/activity/sleep.
Good luck - I hope you feel better soon
I would call your dr. If Advil is not working if you are not allergic to aspirin try Excedrin. That is what I take for my migraines. Hope you feel better soon!
Have you called your doctor's office and spoken with a nurse? That's the first thing I would do. They can tell you if this is normal or not.
What does your doctor say?
I get migraines, but they are not affected (good or bad) by my mirena. So, no link here from a person who is headache prone. Is it possible that your headache is related to your mirena? I'm sure it's possible, but that isn't a side effect I've heard of before.
Headache/migraine is listed as a common side effect of Miriena (levonorgestrel). If you were prone to headaches before, it can make them worse.
If your headache doesn't stop pretty soon, please consider going to urgent care to see if it is a normal headache or a problem situation.
