My son is 19 month old and his been having diarrhea for a month now. I took him to the doctor. His stool samples came negative. He went from having 6 or more BM to 2 a day. This morning he had three liquidly BM. I don't know what to do anymore because it's been too long. I have giving him banana, rice, applesauce, bread, and pedilyte all this time. I also switch to soymilk. But the diarrhea continues. He is teething, but I was told that it has nothing to do with it. Please advice?

Your child may be allergic to soy milk. I have 3 sons with food allergies and my youngest(20 months) who was not allergic to soy milk just began with loose stools...I cut out the soy mmil and replaced with rice milk and all is well again. As humans we tend to eat the same things day after day which include giving our children the same things. With over exposure to the same food items from the same groups sometimes children that are prone to allergies will develop and allergy to those foods given regularly. Good luck....just eliminate one food at a time for days at a time and wait and see. :-)

Please call Dr. Alan Lake who is a pediatrician and a pediatric GI specialist. He listens and takes all parental concerns seriously. His # is ###-###-####. His office is off of 83 at Falls Rd. Let me know how things turn out. Do try the yogurt first. The intestinal tract is filled with all kinds of bacteria. Some are good bacteria like those found in yogurt and some are bad, like those that cause diarrhea. Some yogurts have what are called live or active cultures (bacteria) that attack the not so good bacteria and it helps restore a balance to the GI system. Read the label before you get the yogurt and make sure it says "live or active cultures." If it says heated or something of that nature, it will not help the diarrhea.

Have you tried yogurt? Also a second opinion from another Dr. That seems way too long for him to be like that.

Maybe he is lactose intolerant? A similar thing happened to my daugther around that age, her father is lactose intolerant, when I asked the doc, he said try Lactaid and see what happens. It helped right away. She still drinks lactaid at home, but at about 3.5, she was able to drink regular milk at daycare.

C.,
A month is too long! First, you should get a new peid. If your child has been experiencing this for that long, your DR should be looking into it and trying to find out why.
Soy milk can cause a host of problems for a lot of children. http://v.mercola.com/blogs/public_blog/An-Urgent-Warning-... Try Almond or Rice milk. Rice is not as good for him as Almond would be as far as protein and nutrients.
I agree that you should try yogurt! The bacteria that you and your son needs is called acidophilus. You can get these in powder form, pills and even chewable tablets. Safeway and any Whole Food Store will have them. I would try giving him 1 tablet in morning and 1 at night While Pedialyte can be good for him, too much of it for a extended period of time can cause diarrhea. Try apple juice and water. Be careful on the juice. They really do contain a lot of sugar and depending on the kind, artificial colors, flavors, and preservatives. Even 100% juice is filled with sugar. Of course your daughter wants the juice! She is very smart. Try watering down the juice! I use 2 0z of juice to 4 oz of water.
Another thing I have researched and my doctor agrees. Drink ½ your body weight in pounds in ounces of water daily. · For example, a 20 pound boy needs to drink 10oz. Nothing substitutes for water, not tea, not juice….nothing.
Next is the items he is eating. Are they organic? Try putting him on Organic/Natural food. Both myself and my youngest daughter have food allergies to processed food that contain artificial colors and flavors. We also have food allergies to Preservatives. Both of us will experience diarrhea and sometimes rash/hives. A lot of the food contain added sugars which can in turn cause diarrhea. My middle son experienced bad diarrhea when teething. We have pictures of him where we just sat on the potty with him. I believe the longest it lasted was 2 weeks though! I know when my oldest was this age he suffered from a bought of diarrhea for 3 weeks. We did have his BM tested and it came back negative. But it seemed that after I took him off the pedilyte and Gatorade, and gave him nothing but starchy foods for 4 days, he got better. Never really found out what it was. Anyway, Please let us know what happens....HIH

My son is 14 months and has gotton teeth earlier than most. They sad todders just get diarreah like this for long stints. He had it for over a month and really stinky like sick poop although he wasn't sick. Getting teeth they swallow so much saliva. It absoulutely had to do with teething. It will stop on its own. Also, giving him too much juice, especially apple, will give diarreah. Hope this was healpful.

I agree, you should take him to another doctor. A month is a long time and it could be something intestinal. I have four children and I would say not to worry, but the doctor is not taking this seriously enough. If he can't do something take him to one that will. I will keep you in my prayers...

We’ve used one since our son was about 4 months old. I was with you – pretty sure it worked, didn’t hurt, so we kept it. Then, around 10 months, his broke. Around 10 months, he started cutting 3 teeth at one time. Around 10 months, we went insane (he was up 5 times one night). We ordered a new one in the middle of the night one night, and counted the days til that little latvianamberstore.com box showed up at our door. I have since determined that they work, and they work wonders! He recently cut all 4 of his molars at once, and other than about a month straight of one middle of the night waking, he was happy and you would have barely known they were coming in!

How frustrating! Have you gone to get a second opinion? If not, perhaps you can take him directly to a gastro specialist? It sounds like he's not dehydrated, but something is obviously not agreeing with him. After years of problems similar to your son's, my friend's 5 year old was finally diagnosed with an allergy to gluten (sp?) and now has to stay away from anything wheat. It's tough, but her daughter is doing much better. I'd get a second or even 3rd opinion right away. Good luck!
