My second child (1 week old boy) has diaper rash all over his little bottom. I never really experienced this with my daughter (now 2 years old) so am not familiar with the best treatments. I use A&D creamy lotion but doesn't seem to help. Any suggestions are appreciated.

So What Happened?

Thanks to everyone for the responses! I tried corn starch but found it to be a big mess and it seemed to form little hard pieces in his diaper. So I'm using the Boudreaux's Butt Paste and it seems to be working! I also bought the Triple Paste online and will try that when I get it. Thanks for all the advice!

What finally worked was time to heal and good old fashioned Desitin Original. Now he's been rash-free for months and I still use Desitin with every diaper change.

Triple Paste. I can't even begin to tell you how wonderful this stuff is. I saved my son's butt more times then I can count. It is a little expensive though. The small .2 oz jars are $8 at walmart and CVS has the big ones for $30. But believe me it's worth every $$$.

I have been using Triple Paste on my three kids for years. It is on the expensive side, but it works great!!!

My daughter had the same problem at 2-3 weeks of age. The diaper rash got to be so bad that we had to take her to a pediatric dermatologist. Here is what she prescribed. Brew a stockpot's worth of strong chamomile tea and chill it to a bit cooler than room temperature. Pour some into the baby's tub and soak his little bottom in it for 20 mins, 4 times a day. Yes, the tea is cold and the baby won't like it one bit. However, my daughter was screaming through every diaper change anyway because she was so very raw so you pick your evils, I suppose. Apply a thick coat of Desitin at every diaper change. You should see a marked improvement in 2-3 days.

It works!! My daughter has very sensitive skin, so any bout of diarrhea resulted in diaper rash until she was toilet-trained. Chamomile tea solved the problem every time. The rationale is the following. Cold chamomile is one of the most drying substances in nature, which helps the body to form a protective crust over the affected area.

If your son develops a fungus, characterized by a white substance that won't wash off your son's bottom, you will need to get a prescription for an antifungal ointment from his pediatrician.

Good luck and please feel to email me with any questions.

Change him often. In between changes, soak him bottom in warm water and dry thoroughly. Let him go diaperless
for a half hour or so. Place an open diaper on the crib, lay him tummy down so you minimize the sprinkler effect(smiles)and let his bottom get some air after you've washed it. Then try Butt Paste or AD, but the A&D has to be the ointment, not the cream. You might also want to try changing the brand of wipes and diaper you use. Try something hypoallergenic for the wipes instead of something scented. Baby's tushy is very sensitive right now, so give these suggestions a try. California Baby makes an actual wash for diaper rash, and other products like cream, look it up on the internet and see if it's something of interest to you. Good Luck

TRIPLE PASTE!!!!!!!!!!!
use only with a diaper rash, otherwise the A & D is fine. Give it 2 days and the rash will be gone!

the butt paste is very good. I find when my daughter has this problem a bath helps but since he is so young I dont think you can bathe him. If you can carefully dip his tush in water and wash it with some mild soap, dry him off let him air out if you can, then put the butt paste on. This is what i did for my daughter and it was much better the next day.

I went thru the same thing when my first child was not much older than yours. I was a mess thinking I was a bad mother and wasn't changing her as often as I should have. Then when I had to go to the doctor for my check up I decided to do a little shopping while I was out so I left the baby with my mother in law for a few hours. When I got home I asked how her rash was. She said it was fine. The next time I changed her I found she had, of all things, corn starch on her bottom. And the rash was almost gone! I used corn starch from then on. She never had another diaper rash after that and neither did any of my 4 other children or 6 grand children. Sometimes the old fashioned methods work so much better than all these new fangled creams and lotions!

Hi A., if my kids had a diaper rash I used to sit them in a warm tub with baking soda to draw out the rash and then my ped gave me a presciption ointment called nystatin. That to me worked THE BEST!!! The other stuff over the counter really didn't help. I know the baby is very young but maybe take a washcloth with warm water and baking soda and pat it on the bottom, dry VERY thoroughly and then see if your ped can give you a script for the nystatin. Hope I was of some help. Good luck and congrats!!!!

Just to add to the advice you've already been given...
Nudity will certainly help! But when you need a diaper...be sure that you keep that little bottom dry, all the time. Change him frequently, and always put some cornstarch powder on his bottom during a change. Put the lotion of your choice on top of the dry, powdered bottom. I had success with A & D and an organic brand with a similar make-up. Good luck, and congratulations!

Hi A.
I haven't experienced this yet, but a friend of mine suggested if diaper rash occurs to buy something called Dr. Bordeaux's Butt Paste. ACcording to her, it got rid of her daughter's rash really fast. I have also heard people talking about using cornstarch in the diaper. Because your baby is so young, though, you might want to talk to the pediatrician. Good luck!

A.!!! I am glad to find your request and here it is!!! My second son had and sometime occasionally now have problems with rashes all over his bottom and they said that it was yeast infection. Nystatin that they requested didn't work. Butt Paste didn't work, nothing seem to work...BUT one thing that did work was Destitin!!! I bought a tub of it and it lasts a long time and I only put it on if he gets a rash or if my third son gets a rash. My first son never had the problem with that. Another thing I have learned with my son, when I lost milk when he was about 4 months, and had to be put on formula, tht was when he was having problems with rashes on his bottom. Then, my third son was getting rashes soooo bad and nothing was working except Destitin (hopefully I spelled it right). Try it if all else fails. You can still use it whenever and it won't hurt him whether you try everything else. Please soothe him and wash his bottom with water from shower or something to make sure you get all that garbage off his poor bottom. Sometimes doing more to take care it works out in the long run. Let us know how it goes. I'll pray for you baby.
