Diaper Rash Seems to Hurt More with Diaper Creams

My 1 yr old daughter gets occasional diaper rash but when I put Desitin (it worked best for my other kids) on her she reacts like it hurts even more than just wiping her clean. I use sensitive, no perfume wipes already. Most of the other diaper creams in the store had the same active ingredient, just in varying amounts. So I tried Balmex because it has a smaller percentage of zinc oxide. Her reaction was slightly less extreme but still miserable. She even keeps her legs tight together for many hours after I put the cream on. I've also tried Aquaphor and it didn't clear up the rash at all. So I'm thinking regular petroleum jelly isn't going to do much in the way of healing it either. What else is there?

What can I do next?

It might be a yeast infection but you need to go to your ped to get that diagnosed. If it is yeast, then the ped will give you a script for anti-fungal cream.

You could also try baking soda baths (a small palmful mixed in with the bath tub water) and then let her airdry.

My pediatrician told me that air is what cures diaper rash. But parents aren't willing to gamble their carpet for very long, so they don't let baby's bum air out long enough. He said the only way to really get enough air on the rash is to use a hair dryer! Set it to cool or use the "cool shot" button on and off to have barely warm air, and blow it on your daughter's bum while she's laying on her changing table with a diaper or cloth diaper under her bum. That way, if she does have an accident, you'll have it contained.

It seriously did the trick in no time!

Just wanted to second the yeast infection theory... my son is 9 months old and has had like 3 of those- and all 3 he had that same reaction to diaper rash ointment, thats how I knew they weren't just regular rashes!!! Good luck tot he poor baby!! Also- DEFINITELY try to keep the air on it (like the one mommy said- no diaper as much as possible!!)... ha ha thats always so fun!!!!

Hey carrie,
OOOHHH your poor little baby. I feel so bad for her!! Some things I have tryed in the past with my kids is to put nothing on it at all. I have done lots of little short baths and even though its scarie dont put pants back on her. LOTS of air will help more than anything you could put on her. However if you wanted to try something ou hydrocordisone cream has help us in the past.

Lots of luck to you
Hope the little one feel better!!!

My oldest is allergic to desitin(and most other diaper rash creams). I used 100% zinc oxide, you can get it at any dollar store or walmart. It is not the zinc oxide in it hurting your daughter I would almost bet, it is probably one of the other "inactive" ingredients. I could be wrong, but I've never seen plain old zinc oxide ever hurt anyone. Good Luck.

i hear ya there...my youngest had rashes like crazy...due to certain types of diapers. but my grandmother told me to use cornstarch...just sprinkle some over rash like baby powder and it worked. no harsh chemicals either. just a thought!
