Diaper Rash Due to Teething

My poor little Kacie (7 1/2 mos. old) has got a terrible diaper rash. I suspect from teething. Her first tooth broke through at the beginning of the month and I'm sure there is more to follow. Now she has the diarhea that goes along with it as well as the sore bottom. I am currently using Butt Paste but would appreciate any other suggestions. I know that air is the best. But not very practical especially since she has diarhea. My mother-in-law swears by cornstarch so I am going to pick some up today.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you to all that responded to my diaper rash dilemma. I am willing to try each and everyone of your ideas. Happy to report that the diarhea has slacked off quite a bit so hopefully we can get a handle on it. Thanks again.

I recently had the same problem. I found that anything with zinc oxide was making the rash worse. I used aquaphor and it started to clear it up very fast. Anything clear works good like products that contain petrolatum. Just don't use the white stuff.

Hi, I totally understand what you are going through.
My son Jr, is forever having problems like that too. My doctor told me my son was very sensitive to almost everything on his bottom. Another mom told me about this healing ointment.
Well let me tell you I swear by it. I LOVE it. It is a little pricer than most but try it and see what you think. The name of the product is by "Eucerin", it is called Aquaphor. It is ment for bottoms that are broken out from rashes and are irritated. Try it I believe you will love it!!!

Hi, wow, I've never heard of diaper rash from teething - ouch! Try Aquaphor, California Baby Calendula Cream (so many other uses as well and clears everything up - our favorite!) and here's an interesting tip from the Beech Nut site:

Diaper Rash Dynamo

For the serious diaper rash (yeast, for example) that doesn't respond to regular rash creams, mix Maalox and Aquaphor into a paste and apply it to the rash. You can also "coat" the rash by applying straight Maalox and blowing dry with a cool hair dryer. Works like a charm!

Also switch to Hyland's teething pills (they make other homeopathic tablets for other baby things like colic, colds etc).
Good Luck.

Cloth diapers (for a while, anyway); Calendula cream and / or Weleda diaper rash ointment (found at many health stores); homeopathic teething tablets or gel might relieve some symptoms as well.

Cornstarch can be soothing but I believe it can actually aggravate a yeast rash. If it's a yeast rash then the lotrimin is fine but I would caution using it unless you have a yeast diaper rash-red speckled at first but cam soon turn into red patches. Also, cortisone cream occasionally for a really bad flair up. If yeast is persistant I found really ripe bananas aggravated it so I try give them only yellow bananas vs speckled ones.

Glad to hear you're daughter's rash is clearing up.

SALT BATH!

Get yourself a box of epson salts and give her a nice salt bath!
I recommend 2 cups salt to every 2-3 inches of water in the tub. Let her sit in it for at least 10 minutes and try to do it twice daily, use your cream or powder between baths.

Also give the poor thing baths using Aveeno Baby Oatmeal bath - it's a powder - comes in a box... let her soak her little hiney in it - it is GREAT! Corn starch does work well to keep her skin dry - it soaks up the stuff in her diaper - doesn't really prevent the rash - the butt paste is good - but as for other creams - it differs from baby to baby - I use Desitin, that seems to work on my baby girl (but didn't on my son!) But I love the Oatmeal Bath - it really soothes the skin. And at night time, you can give her a little bit of Infant Tylenol to make her more comfy.

I love A & D ointment ... and if I used if with every diaper change , it prevented it. My daughter only had two diaper rashes in her life , and both times it was when I was not using A & D.
Hope this helped !

Everyone has given great advice. The one thing that worked for me was Aquafor which we still use and my daughter is now 2 1/2. My sister-in-law introduced it to me and I haven't looked back since. The best part it's clear so none of that white gunky stuff all over the place.

Hi S.
i see that some people have already mentioned aquaphor, that is definently the way to fo, my twins are 2 and have such sensitive bums that they can only wear 1 type of diapers and only use wipes that are alcohol free, laytex free and bleach free, with leave only 2 types of wipes. anyhow, when they got ear infections last year the antibiotics gave them such a bad rash that my doc even gave me a prescription for butt cream, which worked ok, but honestly be careful, desitin stings my boys, and butt paste works, but stopped after about 8-10 months, aquaphor has 0 alcohol in it, and is petrolium based and is the only one out there that is, other than the one vasiline makes, and it doesn't have any medications in it. the zinc oxide in desitine and most others it what causes them to sting, so depending on how sensitive your little one is look for what each product has as its base ( the first few ingredient listed) petrolium works b/c like a&d it seals out weetness, and protects, but there are also healing medicines in aquaphor, that help heal (obviously) chapped, burned, blistered skin. it is definently worth the money.

Hi,

I used destinin and it worked great let her sit in warm water and that will also clear it up. Also if you are using orajel that could be making your daughters belly even more upset I stoped using it and started using highlands teething pills.

I don't know if your ready for this one but,,,,,,,, you burn flour and brown it just like your making gravy, not black burnt, just brown it in a pan. Wash the baby's bottom off real good and sprinkle the browned flour on baby's bottom, baby is going to get such a releaf, its going to bring tears of joy to your eyes. If you do it right no reason why it should not work. i raised six children I had to come up witha remedy that would work. My mom was very old fashsion I sat under her , I breast fed, used diapers the whole nine yards. S. if you could get the baby a pack of clothe diapers while shes going through healing use them ever now and again with the rubber pants.

I have 2 ideas: Mix 1 part Maalox and 1 part A& D ointment until a paste and put that on. I just did a search on internet and found this info "Wipe bottom with warm wet washcloths instead of baby wipes during diaper changes. Leave bottom exposed to air as much as possible. Lotrimin cream can be used if diaper rash persists. Diluted cider vinegar can also clear up diaper rash. The skin of an avacado can be rubbed on the bottom to encourage healing. "

Hi,
My name is S.,

I have a 2 year old who broke her first tooth at 5 months (actually it was more like 2 at a time. I found that A & D ointment works the best. The redness was gone in a matter of hours, and no more bumps within a day or so.
I swear by this ointment for many uses, but for diaper rash it's the best!
