The doctor told me for a yeast diaper rash to use Lotrimine. You can find it at dollar stores and walmart. It is the same quality as what they would prescribe. Just cheaper.
My 8 month old son has a diaper rash that started out in his diaper area but has spread out to the first folds on his legs. They look like little dots and some are raised. My first thought was that it was a yeast infection and started using Monistat on him yesterday. Doesn't look too much better today but it may take a while. Would love to know if I am doing the right thing or if there is something better out there.

K., I agree with Brandy. My mother works at a clinic in my town it includes three pediatricians and she gets samples of almost everything on the market. She got my son some Budrox's and it is a MIRACLE cream. It will clear up anything!!!!

I have two words for you: butt paste! Its the best stuff in the world! Also, try this recipe for homemade wipes. Half and half baby oil and baby wash with a little water. Keep it in a rubber maid tub, shake well before you dip a brawny or bounty paper towel in there. (The softest you can find...and I would use aveeno soap too...) This eliminates alcohol in the wipes, which irritates the rash even more. AND if that doesn't work...check the diet! My twins had huge reactions to sugar. Good luck!!!

My 10 month old daughter recently had a similar presentation of diaper rash. My pediatrician's office told me to put a thin layer of Lotrimin antifugal cream (not the extra strength kind) 4 times a day and then lather on the diaper rash cream like you're icing a cake. I used Boudreaux's Butt Paste for my older daughter who had the occasional mild diaper rash, and at that time I too thought it was the miracle cream. However, my second daughter has had terrible diaper rash on and off since she was a newborn, and Butt Paste, Aveeno's diaper rash cream, A&D, etc don't help at all. My pediatrician said that the active ingredient that you're looking for is Zinc oxide, and the cream with the highest content that she is aware of is Desitin Original with 40% Zinc oxide (don't get the Desitin Creamy - for some reason it is a lot lower). So, for a child that has bad diaper rash, I think good 'ole Desitin is a must. Also, if he's just wet, don't wipe off all the cream with each change - just blot him with a warm wet cloth (definitely try to avoid using wipes if at all possible). Obviously if he's poopy you'll need to clean him thoroughly and reapply the cream, again as thick as you would as if you're icing a cake. My baby's rash cleared up in a couple of days following this advice from my doctor. Good luck!
I would probably not use Monistat- I dealt with this a lot when my son has antibiotics he used to always get this
askdrsears.com website has a lot on this - here is what it says on treating it
Yeast rash - when the skin is damaged, yeast from the intestines can invade the skin. This especially occurs with antibiotic use or prolonged rash.
Appearance - it is a red, raised, patchy rash with sharp borders, mostly over the genitalia but with satellite spots sprinkled around the diaper area. Click here to view a picture of a yeast diaper rash.
Treatment - in addition to the above measures, there are two commonly used anti-fungal creams:
Clotrimazole - over-the-counter. Apply 2 - 3 times a days beneath the other creams.
Nystatin - prescription. Not necessarily better, just different.
Acidophilus - this is a natural bacterial powder that fights off yeast. Click on it to learn more.
i have tried all kinds of diaper rash stuff and the best one for me is cornstarch. u can either get it in the baby powder it will say it on the front if it has it or u can get it in the grocery isle. but if u get the one out of grocery u take it home and cook it in a pan till u burn it, let it cool then apply on the child. it does work great either way u get it.
If he is old enough to sit in a safty seat in the tub, I used to soak my son in a baking soda bath. A little baking soda in the warm water and then i think balmex has worked really well for his booty after the bath, dry off and apply cream. Also lots of fresh air really helps a bottom with a rash. I know you might have accidents but if it helps his bottom (especially before it gets sore) then cleaning a little mess shouldn't be too bad. Or put vasiline inside the diaper at night so the skin won't set on the wettness and irrate the rash.
I would suggest you skip the Monistat. Call the pediatrician and he can prescribe something. If you don't want to do that or next time, try a cream called Resinol. A friend of mine gave me some when my son was about 1 yr old and he had a nasty painful rash that covered his butt (we had evacuated because of Katrina and couldn't reach his Doc). It worked like a charm. It can be hard to find but I've found it at Lovelace Drugstore in Ocean Springs. You might be able to get it online or get your pharmacy to order it. A small jar is $5.00 but when the rash is bad it's worth every penny.
Boudreaux's Buttpaste is wonderful.. will clear up the rash. I wouldnt go without it..
I just had the same problem with my 9 1/2 month old girl. all we did was put baby powder on it and it only took a day or two to start looking better. Some times creams will keep the moisture in and the rash will not get any better. I hope that helps.
my now 10 month old daughter had a bad case of yeast infection after she started sitting more. the pediatrician advised us to use lotrimin cream (the stuff you use for athletes foot) on her 4 times a day for 13 days. within 2 days, i noticed a BIG difference and the rash/yeast went away. but on the safe side, i'd call the doctor just to make sure. oh yeah, when she had the yeast infection, she also developed thrush in her mouth and she was given medicine for that. supposedly it automatically happens with a yeast infection in kids per the doctor.
If it is diaper rash, I have the bestsolution for it. It is called Mississippi Mudd. You have to go to the pharmacy and ask for them to mix up a batch for you, but it works miracles. My ex-sister-in-law told me about it and went and got some for me when my youngest was tiny. If your baby does have a yeast infection along with diaper rash, the mud will get rid of the rash in less than a day and then you can treat only the infection. I promise you this stuff is like a miracle cream. It isn't expensive either. Good luck and hope everything works out for you.
Married mother of 7, 3 of my own and 4 step children.
If it is diaper rash go to walgreens and ask for diaper tex. I don't remember the correct spelling but it is applied with a spong app. and it works wonders. I would stay STOP on the monistat. That is for women. consult a doctor.
You might ask the dr about Nystatin. My son had a bad rash for weeks and come to find out it was a yeast infection. They gave him Nystatin and it was about cleared up in a few days. Good luck
It sounds like he has heat also. My son gets in the summer when he gets hot. I put the original destin on him and it goes away in a few days. I hope this help you. I know it gets aggravating sometimes.
Hi K.,
I have a great recipe for diaper cream that was given to me by my pediatrician. It usually starts working in a couple of treatments.
equal parts of neosporin, lotrimin AF, zinc oxide and corn starch. Mix all ingredients in microwave safe bowl. microwave about 30 seconds until it is runny. stir until all the lumps are gone. pour mixture into a container with a lid and let sit until firm (usually just an hour or so.) I use it every time my son has a rash or even looks like he might get one and it works wonders!!
hope this helps
Hi K.,
the best stuff I found was an expensive ointment called AQUAPHOR. I would definately ask the peditrician if you think it is yeast, (I'm not sure that monistat will treat that type of yeast, but I dont know, so I'd definately ask your dr. however at the same time I dont think it will hurt him) but the stuff my ped. gave me for yeast made my little boy's worse. Make sure he stays dry and cornstarch works well also once he's cleared up (They make special cornstarch baby powder)I wouldn't personally put him in any irritating clothing (blue jeans)until the rash is gone, make sure it gets plenty of air or slather the ointment on (which holds moisture in to allow the skin to heal)and cover him with clothing that will prevent his legs from rubbing together. In my opinion, I think it's all just diaper rash (yeast or not), and is very common even when you are doing nothing different.
Good luck
Jenn
A&D it works wonders my daughter had something similar she also would blister w/ a dirty diaper when she was cutting her molars it was the only thing that could be used on her its my mirical worker
K.~ I have three words for you; Beourdoux's Butt Paste!
You can get it at Wal-Mart, its about $7 and it is a MIRACLE CREAM! If the Monistat isn't working yet, it may not be yeast..usually within a day it will start to clear up if that's what it is.

the best thing that i found to use was corn starch, my kids would get diaper rashes that would bleed and i tried the creams they didn't work and the baby powder hurts them cause it has purfume in it. so i always used plain cornstarch. hope this helps
I think you should take your son to the doctor to find out if it is diaper rash or not. B/c it could be something worse.
