it depends on the medications, the insurance plan, the formulary benefit manager who determines what medications are covered at what level, what the complications are, if the products are available in combination form, etc.

There are a lot of programs and a lot of advice - just need to know where to find it.

Around here (not sure if this is the same in your state). You can get certain generic meds for $4/month at walmart, Kmart, and target. If he is on brand name medications, check with the company that makes it. Many brand name meds have special programs.

Is your Dad on Medicaid? I am almost certain that they cover a large portion of the expenses for diabetic care. My Dad is also diabetic, and I know it covers his test strips (as long as the doc says he needs them) and then he pays a copay for his meds. A lot of pharmaceutical companies have assistance programs for this type of situation, so it would be worth checking with the company that makes your Dad's meds.
I hope he is taking care with his diet and exercise. Those really do make a difference.

Call the American Diabetes Association. They will have resources for you.

If possible, go to his doctor appointment with him, and explain it to the doctor. I'm sure they will have some advice.

Or, Caremark www.caremark.com (which is a mail-order discount pharmacy. My Mom gets her prescriptions from here as well). And my own City & County in my State, puts out brochures about it, for citizens.
