Delivery Experience at Southview - Dayton

Hi all! My husband and I are expecting our 1st baby boy in late June. Because of the convenient location and what our insurance will pay, Southview is the planned location for delivery. I've been hearing lately that they have a very high c-section rate and are not always mother-friendly. I was wondering what others' experiences were like at Southview. In order to change hospitals I would also need to change doctors because he only delivers at Southview or Middletown. Thanks for your responses!

hi N. i had my first child at southview. The delivery nurses was wonderful to me. They was very knowledgable and knew what they was doing with us. We only had one problem they never would come in and clean my room. Right after i had my daughter they never cleaned the floor or anything. But that was the only problem we had. The delivery nurse that i had was a midwife as well, she really helped us have a natural childbirth. And also i dont know if you are going to breastfeed but they also have a specialist come in and help you breastfeed and they also will come to your house when you leave to help you at home. But i hope you have a great experience like i did. And congratulations!!!! Let us know how everything goes. Good luck!!!

I had my baby (naturally, no medication) at Miami Valley, but have heard bad things about Southview. I would recommend Dr. Guy and the midwives at Miami Valley. My baby was breech, it was my first baby, and I was able to birth her naturally with their help. Also, I would suggest that anyone interested in natural birth consider hiring a doula. Amy Chavez is a great local doula, she attended my birth and was a tremendous support, and I would recommend her highly. Good luck!

I had my son at Southview (he is 7 now). I was very pleased. It was a breath of fresh air compared to having my two girls at Miami Valley.

Best Wishes

Hi N.!
I had my first daughter at Good Sam, and my second daughter at Southview. I would say that Good Sam's room was a tad bigger, I really liked Southview better. Now, I did have a c-section both times, but with my second daughter, it was by choice. I think that it's up to you and the dr on whether you want a c-section or not. My dr was all up for trying a VBAC, and I choose not to. The nurses were super helpful, the lactation consultant was much better there than at Good Sam and they didn't argue with me when I wanted my daughter to stay in the room with me or when I wanted to nap. At Good Sam, with my first, they would 'disagree' with me on when I should have her in the room and when I should rest! These nurses left it completely up to me, which was nice. My ex-husband even said the pull out was much more comfortable than the one at Good Sam!
Good luck! Let us know how it goes!

I delivered my twins there and then my singleton. Although I had planned C-sections with both. I would imagine the chance of a section is based more on the dr than the hospital. I know plenty of moms who have delivered there naturally. My expereince there was wonderful! It's a smaller hospital so you get more one-on-one care. My nurses were fantastic and very attentive to my needs. They are super about letting you keep the baby in your room, something I really wanted with the twins. Not only were the nurses great but so were the aids, even the attendant who brought you your food. Everyone was very respectful of your privacy. I nursed my babies and got a tremendous amount of support from the lactation consultants even after I left the hospital. As you can see, I had a wonderful expereince. I have visited other friends in maternity suites at kettering and miami valley and I have to say the rooms at Southview are bigger and the atmosphere just appeared calmer (probably due to the smaller setting). Good luck making yoru decision.
