I am a SAHM with a 17-almost 18 month old boy. He started saying mamma and dadda and ball (i think) around 14 months, but now only says dadda (not clearly). He says no other words, and makes sounds like oooo, ohhh, dahh-doo, ahhhh. He seems to hear ok, turn when i make a noise etc. He can smile at people, and can give eye contact, but does not. he does keep to himself when he plays, he also likes to run his toys up and down my hall way repetitively, he does not point, he does not follow my point. he does try and imitate me doing some things, but does not wave hi, or bye, and does not imitate my words to him. COUld all this be normal, or Does
he have mild autism? or can speech delay be caused by something else. Im feel very uncertain.

What can I do next?

Hi K., I don't really think it is uncommom for a boy is age not to be talking much, I have had 2 year old little boys in my daycare that don't talk much, but i get them tring to use their words, and being around the other children helps, becasue they are all communicating with one another, so it helps other kids learn to talk more. read to him a lot, play word games with him everyday, and if this doesn't help then I would Just call him Ped and get sme advice. I agree that an informal assessment with San Diego Regional Center is a good idea (www.sdrc.org) Early intervention is powerful and if its determined he needs a little support, now is the time to get it. If anything, peace of mind in having someone else take a look is valuable. Good luck!

Hi K.,

yes, I would certainly be concerned enough to get an assessment. San Diego Regional Center will do a no cost assessment. you could also take him to a Developmental Pediatrician. The important thing is that if there is an issue, like speech delay and/or autism, you will be able to start getting him help now. It can make a big difference to start when he is young.

Also, look at the TACA website (Talk about Curing Autism)....you can find more information about the signs of autism.

Best wishes

You should contact the Regional Center for a free assessment which can determine whether he's qualified for a free in-home speech therapy. Also have an audiologist check his hearing. Here's a post that may be useful for you:
