Decline in Eating

Just before my little girl turned 4 months she had been eating 4 teaspoons of cereal and 8 oz of formula, every four hours. Just a week after her 4 month appt I was told by the pediatrician that I could start introducing solids. Green beans were the first thing I gave her and the faces were a riot but she ate it. Then all of a sudden she won't eat the veggies only sweet potatoes and loves the cereal but she won't drink a whole bottle anymore just in the morning and then during the day and at night only about 4 to 5oz. She also has been getting a little bit of diarrhea but isn't running a fever and is happy as can be. She also started waking up at like 3:00 in the morning when before she was sleeping right through the night till 6:30am. Some people tell me she could be teething because she drools alot and wants everything in her mouth :) Has anyone else ever experienced this?

What can I do next?

My son definately eats less when he is teething and never once did he get a fever while he was teething. Amber will start eating normal again soon, but it may take some time because DJ was teething from the time he was three months and didn't get his first tooth till he was 5 months. Hope this helps!

It does sound like she's teething, my daughter started when she was around this age too. Diarrhea can be a symptom of the teething and/or her body adjusting to the solids. Intoducing solids isn't easy for the baby or the parents. My daughter is 15 mths now and I still struggle with her eating habits. Give your baby a little time to adjust to this new experience. With any age child whenever there is a new experience in their life they kinda regress a little. Teething is hard enough, never mind new tastes and textures. My daughter LOVED sweet potatoes but not the cereal. As long as Amber is drinking any formula, she's getting the nutrients that she needs. Only eating sweet pot.s and cereal for a little while is ok. She'll like other things when she's ready. The whole solids thing was frusterating for me too. Threw out a lot of jars of food. Just be patient and live out of the box a little. Being a new Mom/Dad is hard and can cause a lot of anxiety. It will be fine, don't worry. Just try to keep on enjoying the experience, the silly faces for example. They grow up way too fast. :(

I am sort of experiencing the same thing. My daughter is 5 months old and I have just started solids and have been doing cereal for about a month now. She was getting really good with the cereal so I introduced apples, then pears, then bananas. Now she has figured out how to lock her mouth shut and once I sneak some food in she will just hold it in her mouth (wide open) then finally swallow - as funny as it is, I can't tell if she just doesn't like the food or is still learning. She also has been drooling for quite a while. She is starting to shove EVERYTHING in her mouth now - including my face :) I massage her gums a lot, which she seems to like, but I think it's something we just have to ride out. I am just hoping they all come in at the same time, so we only have to go through this once...wishful thinking! Oh yeah - she also was only getting up once during the night to eat, but is back to two, with a couple extra trips in to give her a pacifier. I was just getting used to sleeping a little longer and now am back to sleeping a few hours at a time.

I know this probably hasn't helped you figure anything out, but I just thought you would like to know you aren't alone, and I do chalk this all up to teething too.

Also, maybe we could meet for a play date or go to story time together if you are in the Nashua area.
Good Luck

Hi S.!

My son Jacob was a lot like that when he was teething. Unfortunately he didn't get teeth for about 3 months after it started but his eating patterns eventually became "normal" again. He had gone from eating a 6oz. bottle at every meal to 3oz. I think the most important thing is that Amber is happy and acting normal. She will let you know if anything is wrong...

GOOD LUCK!!

My son got his first two teeth around 4 months so she could be teething. You'll find when your baby starts eating more solids she'll drink less. I asked my son's doctor about this and he said it was perfectly normal. My son takes about 3 8oz bottles a day now compared to around 6. As long as your baby is gaining weight and your doctor isn't concerned she should be fine.

My youngest is 2 and she still runs a little temp and doesn't eat well when her teeth are bothering her. She also gets a little bit of a runny nose. I'd call the doctor anyway, but it sounds pretty normal. Or at least maybe it's normal for her...my kids have all been different as far as teething and eating go.

She seems to have decied that the only vegetable that tastes good id the sweet one.

She may also be having a harder time digesting the new vegetables. You should talke to the pediatrician.

If she has not lost weight she may just be adjusting the intake of volume and callories. If she is having the same amount of calories then she should slowly gain weight.

Loose stool seems to indicated that she is having trouble digesting. She may need to go back to what she was eating before she began having troubles and reintroduce stuff at a slower pace.
