Daughter with Terrible Diaper Rash

My daughter has had a very bad diaper rash that keeps coming and going. I have tried a couple of things but nothing is helping in the long term. She just squeals when I try to clean her up or when she is going to the bathroom. Any suggestions on stuff that worked for you? I am pretty sure it is not a yeast infection because I checked it out online (what it looks like and other). Thanks

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

It was a yeast infection and we have a prescription cream we are using. Thanks for the help everyone. It is no longer there and we are rash free. Thanks again

I swear by Bag Balm. It works better than any prescription the Dr. will give you for diaper rash. You have to ask the pharmacist for it, but it's not a prescription, they just keep it behind the pharmacy counter. It's also very cheap. $4.00 for a small tin or $8.00 for the large and it lasts forever. You only need to put on a drop. I've even used it on my face if it's broken out! It comes in a green tin and it won't say on the tin it's for a diaper rash, they call it udder cream I think, but it is for diaper rash. The stuff is amazing. Good luck and let me know if you do try it how it worked for you. P.

My daughter was the same way. You should take her to the doctors just in case. In the mean time, soak her in baking soda and warm water. Do not use baby wipes. Use wash clothes soaked in warm water. Use desetin with zinc. I kept doing that until her complexion came back not just until it healed, but until her color came back. Something must have triggered it. My daughter had one and I was using this diaper rash stuff from Caswell and Massies (seemed expensive and it was a gift)and it kept getting worse and worse. Come to find out it caused her yeast infection. But the baking soda bath and the warm rag cleanings worked well.

Hi T.,
Use BALMEX. It clears up diaper rash within one day. It's the best stuff for my daughter. If you've already tried it and it hasn't worked. There's some powder called CALDESENE. It comes in a round pink plastic container. My x-roommate swears by it and I have used it a couple of times and it worked ok for my daughter. But personally I prefer the BALMEX.

Hello, I wanted to add one thing to the Niastatin suggestion. We did the prescription powder version along with the Butt Paste and/or Triple paste . That combo along with all the air time etc cleared it up right away. We would use the powder at the first sign of flair up to stop before it got worse and it would be gone in hours. This came from a walk in DR after it got really bad one weekend. He said to use the powder Niastatin because the area already has moisture and all your doing is sealing in more. The powder would help dry it up instead of inflaming it more with more creams etc. When we did this it was the first thing that worked and kept it away after fighting it for almost a year on and off.

OOhh one last old time trick my grandmother used to do.. BAKING SODA in the bath. It helps neutralize the skins pH and does help sooth it right away. Toss a cup or 2 in when running the bath.

I hope her bottom clears well. We know to well how you feel when your trying to help and they are screaming and there is nothing you can do about it.

Try letting her go without a diaper to "dry out" as often as possible, also a cream called Triple Paste works very well. Just to be sure it is not yeast infection, I would have her checkedby a Dr. You can try putting Yogurt with "live cultures" on her down there for a few minutes & then wiping it off or do that just before bath time, Of course feeding her the "unused" yogurt is a good thing to keep the "yeasties" away.
Hope that helps!

Have you tried Destin... I use this on my son. It is the only thing that works. The Original Desitin. He is 3 and still gets bad diaper rash. Also let her sit in the bath tub for a little while. Or put cotton underpants on her for a little while..Or you can also use Aquafore it is for sun bur, but it works on bad diaper rash too. Both have worked great for me.. GOOD LUCK, M..

I have a 19 month old daughter who had a problem with what I thought(and her peditrician) was diaper rash. I tried everything I could think of and what the doctor told me to use and nothing worked. I finally made an appt. with a dermatologist who tested and found that it was a yeast infection. It did not look like the text book yeast infection. The dermatologist prescribed a cream called Ketoconazole. A small amount of that and it was gone in two days. She has not had another problem with rashes since and that was over 6 months ago.

Hi T.,
Try cornstarch.....don't be afraid to use a lot of it either.
I have used it on both of my daughters since they were babies.
I use it now once in a great while, if they forget to wipe correctly, and get a little sore...they even ask for it they are 4 and 7. It clears up in a day or so. It is costs under a dollar so if it doesn't work for her you didn't waste much money. Good luck I hope she gets better.

The best thing is to let her go diaperless! Also, try using cloth diapers, especially when it is really bad. It could be a reaction to the chemicals in the diapers. There are diaper services in the area that will deliver and pick up the dirties and it costs the same as disposables!!!

A&D ointment is the only thing that works on my son's diaper rashes. Yesterday he had a really nasty spot that looked like raw hamburger. Today it's almost completely cleared up. Each change I clean the area and let it get a few minutes of air. Then I put the ointment on really thick. It acts as a barrier and keeps the diaper from rubbing on the area, as well as keeps urine and poo from getting on it.

My daughter has the same problem. My doctor finally prescribed Niastatin Cream for her. She explained that some children, especially little girls, are prone to breakouts because of the pH levels in their urine. Not getting enough air to that area is the major problem. If you can stand to let her have naked time, it may help, even if it is while she is napping. Place a towel under her bottom and remove her diaper while she sleeps. This will allow air to circulate. Also, ask your doctor about Niastatin Cream. It works wonders.

I would recommend changing diapers and/or wipes brands. Moisture can make a rash worse and a way to help with that is to use a hair dryer with a cool setting to dry her each time you change her (this was recommended by a pediatrician of a baby I used to watch). Butt Paste, which is available at Walmat, is great! Also, if it doesn't go away, a trip to the doctor's may be a good idea but it could be a yeast infection even if you don't think that's what it looks like (that was the case with my niece a couple times and she had to have a prescription cream).

Another idea would be, and I know your daughter is a little on the young side, but a painful diaper rash may be a good time to introduce a potty and the idea that there are no more rashes once she is wearing pretty panties.

Good look!

I would take her to the doctor to get it checked out because it might not be a yeast infection but the diaper rash might have a fungal infection. I recommend Aquaphor. It is a bit expensive, but well worth it and many flexible spending accounts cover it. My son has had recurrent diaper rash problems and this is what we use to clear them up, but I also strongly suggest keeping track of what she eats. I found that my son always got a terrible rash when he ate carrots and lots of apples. You may find some correlation between her diet and rashes and then by simply eliminating those foods, you an drastically reduce her incidence of rash. Good Luck.

Try putting baking powder and cinnamon in her bath water. You will be amazed at how quickly the rash will go away. You can also make a paste out of it. Much less expensive that the others and you probably have both things in your kitchen right now. I used to keep both in the bathroom as well when the bos were in diapers.

Hi T.,

I'm sorry to hear that your daughter has diaper rash....I have 8 month-old boy/girl twins, and my daughter has also had reallyreally bad diaper rash in the past.

What has worked for us (and she was but a wee babe, not crawling around or scooting like she is now, so I don't know how this treatment would work these days, but here goes...) first, I would clean her bottom under running water, with or without soap (really mild Aveeno baby soap), depending on the mess. When she was inflamed I wouldn't use wipes, even the kind with no alcohol. Then I'd pat her dry, and apply a cortisone-based cream from the dr. called "acid mantle"...it's a 1% cortisone cream, and has helped with any sort of rash the babies have had anywhere. The acid mantle is a prescription, but maybe you could find a cream in the pharmacy that has just a little bit of cortisone in it, or even ask your dr. to prescribe some. Then I'd cover her with plain corn starch...the kind you use in the kitchen...no fragrances or other ingredients, and (here comes the tricky part) then sit her on top of a bunch of towels and an open diaper so her bottom is exposed to the air.

It's an all-day event, and nothing else gets accomplished, because you have to be right by her to try to keep her on the diaper, to minimize mess when she goes, then everytime she goes it requires getting her to the sink, cleaning her off, patting her dry, and applying a new coat of cream and corn starch. (She might even want to be held and comforted, because it can be so uncomfortable when...you know.) I would ask your dr. about any sort of cream before I'd use it....I'm super careful about the fragrances and other things in over-the-counter stuff, especially with her and her bottom, because it seems she's just so sensitive.

After a couple of bouts with bad diaper rash, and they seemed to be back-to-back, I try to prevent it by using diapers that have no dyes in them, especially in the part that's next to her bottom...White Cloud diapers are white inside and out. I also keep close tabs on her juice intake, and if she starts to get even a bump or two, I back off the juice until she's clear.

So, I know this is a very long response to a very short question...but to boil it down:
1. Wash with water and mild baby soap.
2. Dry with clean towel.
3. Apply a bit of soothing cream (I don't know that I'd use desitin just yet, because that would prevent the skin from breathing, and just trap moisture). Be careful of fragrances, they'll just irritate the sore skin. If you can't find a lite, soothing cream w/o fragrances that seem like they'd be ok for baby, I would go without the cream and just use the corn starch.
4. Use a generous amount of plain corn starch.
5. Try to keep the area open to the air as much as possible.

It's going to take at least one full day, at least it did for us. Then as soon as I thought I had it on the run, it came back again...but she's been ok for a few months now, Thank God.

I hope this helps, good luck....I hope she feels better. Maybe even a little bit of children's Tylenol to ease her discomfort? Cassidy was too young to consider that the first time, but it seems to take the edge off after they've gotten shots or during the tough part of teething.

Hope it gets better, A.

For prevention and treatment of diaper rashes:

My name is K. Musselman and I have a 7 week old baby boy. I live with my very German mother and she has given me all the tools and advice I need for a healthy happy baby. My son has never had a diaper rash and here's why. In the USA, diaper rash is an expected occurance. However, in Europe is rare due to differences in traditions and centuries old care. Doctors here will tell you to apply medicated creams but they are only a reliever not a preventer.

I, along with all of Germany, use a mild thick cream called Penaten Baby Wundshutz Creme. I never use baby wipes, I use warm water on a small cloth and always clean from front to back, genitals to butt. Then I apply a generouse amount of this cream all over and every single time I change my baby's diaper. Also, diapers are expensive but I will never sacrifice my baby's bottom to save. Every time his diaper is wet or soiled, up to ten times a day, I am quick to change him.

They even now produce diapers in Germany with lotions already in them!!

This creme is very mild and is ment specifically for baby's bottoms. Everyone I have given this advice to so far swears by it.

If you have any more questions, I'd love to help =)

Good luck,
K.

Hi T.,

I took my son, now 13 months, to the doctor for advice on a diaper rash. His urine literally burned his skin. First of all, I changed his diet temporarily to bland foods...and for the rash, put on a thick layer of Triple Paste, or Butt Paste, like you are frosting a cake. Then add a layer of Vaseline over top. When you change her diaper, simply wipe off the Vaseline, and add a fresh layer. The Triple paste will come off during her bath. Hope this helps.

My son used to get horrible diaper rashes when he was a baby.

I tried many things and some of them were...

1. Use unscented baby wipes, they are less irritating to baby skin. Or you can make your own using thick paper towels, baby soap and baby oil... the recipe can be found online although I'm not sure of the site.

2. I always found that Desitin was the most effective barrier cream to use. It has more zinc than balmex and stays on longer. However, it is also much harder to wipe off

3. Corn starch... not corn starch baby powder, just the regular stuff. I work in a nursing home and several of my elderly patients swear by it so I decided to give it a try and it really worked.

4. Let your daughter spend some time with no diaper on to air out the rash.

I really hope this helps :)

My son would get terrible diaper rashes, and they looked nothing like the yeast infections that I saw online and in my baby books. I tried everything and nothing worked except a vinegar/ water solution that was recommended for yeast infections. Lots of naked time too, perferably where the sun can hit her bottom, In front of a window or something. (Sunlight kills yeast.)

My girls all had horrible diaper rash-turns out it was actually yeast related -- try letting baby's bottom dry out every day for as long as possible after bath or if you can lay the little one on a blanket in the sun in front of a window-it can help dry it out. I found Caldescene powder worked well-it had anti-fungal properties. A couple times they took an oral yeast medication also used for thrush--my grandson had the same thing and my sister's 1 yr old son has the same thing. Her pediatrician just prescribed the drops. Some babies just get lucky and mom had high estrogen & yeast, passing it on to baby. It's very common. Use all hypoallergenic soaps & nothing w/fragrance or color. A wee bit of baking soda in the bath can help soothe/dry it out. If it keeps up-ask Dr. about oral med-this can be very painful for little ones. J. Erie PA

Yeast infection doesn't always look the same. My son used to get it and it was just a bright red rash (no bumps or anything). You may want to try a little anti-fungal cream (jock itch Lotrimin) for a couple of days and see if it gets better. If it is a yeast infection, it should get better overnight with the cream. It can't hurt either way. Otherwise, try your doctor for advice.

Here's the link for my request for the diaper rash dilema!

We've struggled with a diaper rash all summer. It started in June whe I switched to pull ups to try to potty train my girl. Turns out she's allergic to pull ups?! (per the doctor). I had luck with pure cornstarch (the kind you cook with) and Triple Paste- available at pharmacies (I get mine at CVS). Plus, I use some Lotrimin (once in the morning and once before bed) for a few days (3-5) when her tush looks particularly bad. It FINALLY seems to be going away for real. Her rash here would look like it would clear up and then it would come back and look better and get worse....I also think that juice was to blame a little bit. I switched her off juice (1 2oz juice, 4 oz water a day) and I think that's REALLY what's helped us.

Catie had never had a diaper rash before this, so you can understand that I was horrified and ill-equipped to deal with one this bad! Everyone gave such great advice and it REALLY helped us out!

Good luck!!!!!!!!
C.

The thing that worked for my son was a combination of diaper-free time and Aquaphor. None of the other lotions/creams worked for him. It's a lot like vaseline, but it didn't do a thing for him. With this combination, even the worst rashes were usually gone within 24 hours. We usually did the diaper-free time right after bath so his skin was extra clean and could get super dry before bedtime. Throughout the day I'd try to get a couple extra "session" of bare bum time if it seemed extra sore. Good Luck

Double check with your doctor but I have always had the same problem with my 20 month old son. It was recommended to me to use an antifungal foot cream on his diaper area. I use the generic brand of Lotrimin AF. I apply that directly to the infected area and then cover it with a thick diaper cream. Also, if whenever you have the time it is best to let the air get to the area and let her run around a bit without a diaper (without the creams). Of course that is a bit tricky. With the cream and letting the air get to it, it will usually look better within 24 hours. Like I said, check with your doctor because they may want ot rule out an infection especially if it is bleeding.

U know what me and ur daughter is almost the same age. She went through the same thing, in which i had to take her to the doctors. They treated her with nystatin, i think that is spelled right, that is for the yeast, my daughter didn't react to that very good, somebody else told me about yougurt, the plain kind, so i gave her that and it went away.

Hi T.,
my daughter angela has never had diaper rash but has had yeast infections and are very continuous. my ped said to clean her use dove soap...it has no perfumes and i believe is antibactieral...dial soap will only make it worse she said...for the rash try using lotromine cream...she prescribed it for her yeast infection and was a little nervous because what its used for but my goodness it takes it away...try it and see what you think or use a vagisil...that has a numbing agent in it...it may ease the pain. hope this helps.

Have you tried Butt Paste? You can get it at a health food store. It is wonderful. Also, let her naked as much as possiable. Babies should always have what I call "Naked Time"....Every night! I usually let my one yr old go naked for about 15 min before bath time at night....It allows air to hit her but, and sooth....They love it, and yes, they might pee, but it is better than suffering...

I know you tried just about anything. But you ever try A&D?
Its a ointment...found every where. I'd put that on each changn' and most time do it is when sleeping all because shes sleeping hours without a change. And also as you heard...lots of air. Try a warm bath..if nothing else works talk to your doctor. But A&D did help my baby...it wasnt bad diaper rash but alittle red sometimes. Good luck

Hi T.,
Maybe it is the diaper alone. Try changing diaper brands. That is what I had to do with my children.

Hello, my name is K.. My daughter is 13 months old. She had a terrible rash it is just almost gone now since about A week before her first birthday. Is it red and bumpy? Because that is a yeast infection which is what she had they prescribed Nystatin cream and an antibiotic because a few of the bumps got infected. What does it look like?

My suggestion is a diaper rash cream called triple paste, its very expensive but works wonders. You can usually only get it in the pharmecy but you do not have to have a prescription just ask. I used that and triple antibiotic ointment for my daughter she also got diaper rashes all of the time. She is now two and completely potty trained another suggestion is start training her now then the diaper rashes will calm down. Thats what I had to do!! Good luck!

One thing which helped mine was vaseline, and good old fationed corn starch. Also im sure somebody else has mentioned it already, but did you think it might be an allergy, one of my sisters used to get bad rashes, then mom switched to cloth diapers, and they went away...or it could be something shes eating which could be causeing it. try keeping track of everything she comes in contact with . hope something helps, good luck.

I've had a similar problem with my daughter. She would develope these rashes about where the diaper meets the inner thigh and I tried different things until someone suggested to me A&D ointment. Nothing else made it go away and after 2 days of using A&D it went away. Give it a shot.

With 4 children, we had 4 different remedies. The two most effective were 'butt paste' for our youngest sometimes followed by powder on top of the butt paste. For our daughter we found a great powder at WalMart called Mexsana. That was the only thing that helped her, yet her rash did turn into a yeast infection. Hope this helps!

Good luck,

My youngist son has very sensative skin. And the only thing that ever worked was Desatine. I wish I owned stoke in it!
