Daughter Keeps Scratching/Touching Her Ear

She's 9 months old, and this started a few months ago, but it's getting more and more frequent. I know it's not an ear infection, because she's been to the doctor many times for other things, and they always check her ears. I think I even mentioned that she had been touching her ear the last time she went, because I was worried about a possible ear infection.

Tonight I started really noticing it, and wondering if I should be concerned. At first she started doing it just when she was having a bottle. I've noticed it at other times, but haven't really thought much of it. I don't know if she's doing it more tonight, or if I'm just noticing it more, but I can't really figure out a common theme. I want to say she does it when she's excited, but I haven't watched it closely enough to really be able to say that for sure. That's just my gut telling me that.

Any thoughts??

So What Happened?

Yes, she is teething!! Thank you so much!! I'm so happy to hear that. Sorry if I seem a little too excited about that information. Her father has a lot of mental illnesses. I didn't know about any of that until after I was pregnant, for anyone who is going to ask/judge me on that one--and yes I have Jesus in my life. Anyway, it's not a good thing, but I feel like I have to be on the lookout for odd behavior, just in case. I just got a little worried tonight, but all is well!! :)

Could be just drainage. My ear is itchy when I everything is draining and this time of year there is lot of that going on.

if she was doing it while drinking a bottle sounds like she is doing it for comfort believe me if she had an ear infection you'd know she would not be a happy baby.

My 18 month old has always scratched and tugged, at his ears while teething.
The Dr. told me nerves in the gums travel up the jaw line, and messing with the ears brings comfort and relief. He is pushing his 2 year molars right now and actually sticks his fingers in his ears. We took him to the Dr. Friday, for a well visit and his ears were fine. He also messes with his ears when there is a little water in there. Is your daughter teething? She might also rub her cheeks a lot, for teething relief.

I took my baby at least 3 times because my friend and MIL insisted "She is tugging her ear so she has an infection." She never did. Years later she got one and WOW did she cry and hurt. The pediatrician said she was soothing herself or there was a bit of water and wax in her ear after a bath. One drop of Peroxide on a wet(with water)qtip, but not too deep and she stopped.

My son used to do that all the time when he was little. He didn't act like it was hurting so i wasn't too concerned. Hes never had an ear infection.

my baby's 7 months old and she does that too- and it's because she's teething. there's a lot of pressure in their sinuses and ears from the teeth pushing through. since you've been to the doctor so much i'd feel secure it's not an ear infection. i was told and also read about the teething and ear pain. hope this helps a bit!

My daughter is 8 months and pulls on her ears also. For her it is a comfort thing that she does when she is tired. It is just a habit for her now, so even when your daughter isnt teething if she still does it, it is probably just a habit for her. I would not worry about it.
