Hi Everyone,

My almost 5 yr old was diagnosed with Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome about 3 years ago. She was on Cyproheptadine for a year and then taken off, however about 6 months after that she was again starting the vomiting cycles. So again she went back on the meds. She has continued to be on the meds again (since Jan) and we will probably try to wean her again in January of 2009. I was just wondering if anyone out there has a child with this? Have you been successful with the medication? How about any other suggestions?
(We have tried Chiropractic.) Thanks in advance for any advice.

What can I do next?

Hi B.,

I wish I had something more helpful to say than what is to follow. My brother and I both had this as children, between the ages of 8 and 14. I had episodes once or twice a month for at least a year, and then it would happen again two years later. The doctors could never diagnose it, which depressed me as a child. I literally thought I was dying (I of course was not, but being that sick is very depressing). My brother and I are both in our 20's and are healthy. I would attribute it to stress and anxiety. I hope your daughter gets through this soon and I feel for you having to watch your daughter go through this. Just know, it will pass...

This might seem like an avenue you wouldn't necessarily think of, but we go to a doctor that does combinations of kinesiology, allopathy, western physiology, chiropractic and does a technique that has done wonders for our 2 year old called NAET. It is an allergy elimination techique - www.NAET.com - and they have found that many kids have many undiagnosed food and other type allergies that starts to affect their thinking, hyperactivity levels, bodily functions etc. With our son, he became severely asthmatic by age 18 mo. and we had him on 7 meds. He is now totally off all of his meds after 4 weeks of NAET - and he had 17 undiagnosed food allergies - even AFTER going to an ALLERGIST!!!

We go to Dr. Tam in Lombard. He works with lots of kids - including those with autism, add, adhd, asthma, allergies in general, as well as the areas that are less commen, and harder to decipher.

He tests kids for the strains of good and bad bacteria they have in their body. My son was totally MISSING two of the 4 strains of good bacteria you are suppossed to have in the body and adult levels of inflammation. He was borderline IBD Irratible Bowel Disorder at age 2, TOTALLY missed by the pediatricians, allergists, etc.

It is TOTALLY worth it and has totally changed our little boy for the better. You can call and ask questions - he is very good about answering questions before you come.

Our insurance covers it - you can call and ask if yours does.

Please, please make sure to rule out other things like Celiac disease, food allergies. As my daughter would vomit and have tummy pain at night, wake up crying throwing up and it would go away after about 1-2 hours. I worked hard to get testing and she ended up have Celiac disease(unable to digest gluten in Wheat Rye Barley and Contamiated Oats). She went on the diet(not as daunting as you may think) and she stopped getting sick and started being happier, healthier hair, growing better and didn't have a sickly pale look to her. I know it may not be your answer but ask about it. Make sure it is done by a pediactric GI who knows how to test and what the Gold Standard testing is. As I would not place my child on tons of drugs for something if it could be solved by altering her diet. If she is diagnosed let me know as I offer a few pieces of advice to get you started or I do a service of teaching you how to shop and get used to a new lifestyle.

I know you said you tried chiropractic, which is great. I have patients that have tried other chiropractors before finding one that specializes in what they need. Occasionally trying another chiropractor (second opinion) might be of help. It sounds like there is some torsion in her organs or muscle contractions. I send patients that are too far from the office to www.icpa4kids.org to find an office that specializes in children. Best of luck finding what works for your family.

Feel free to call the office.

I don't know about that condition, but perhaps like another poster said, it will pass. My cousin had something similar when she was a little older than your daughter. It was not diagnosed like hers was. It was most likely due to stress or anxiety. She would have bouts of vomiting for no apparent reason and was not sick. Her mom didn't really know what to do with her. They did talk about it and it helped somewhat. For a time, she would get up in the morning and ask if she could throw up now. Eventually it stopped. I don't really have any advice to offer other than telling this story which may or may not relate to your daughter. It must be heartbreaking and I hope it does pass.

What I have read about this syndrome says it could be allergy related. Have you had her tested for allergies? Also you could keep a food diary and a dairy of what is going on. Is school starting, is there a birthday party etc.. I started about 10 years ago just getting violently sick. It was like I had food poisoning. I linked it back to eatting meat that had been radiated or treated. I now only get my meat from a butcher. I still throw up more then normal but changing where I bought our meat has helped alot. I wish you and your daughter the best of luck. I feel so bad for you both.
