Hi Moms!
My son is almost five and I want to start teaching him how to tie his own shoes. Any great suggestions to make this task easier for him?
Thanks!
A.

Have him practice on something larger than a shoelace.
We used the belt from his robe and he tied it around his thigh.
I think I got that tip here and it worked!

"One bunny ear"...1st loop
"The dog chased the rabbit around".....wrapping around the 1st ear
"Two bunny ears, the bunny is safe"....tucking the 2nd loop thru.

worked for all the kids in our family.

Disclaimer: spent weeks teaching my sons. My older son swears his Aunt taught him....yeah, right....she showed him 1 time! My younger son swears his preschool teacher taught him......yeah, right....she showed him 1 time! Sucks to be a mom sometimes! Both sons were taught before KG, & never/ever wore velcro!

Good luck! My son is 9 and his tying is a mess LOL. He did not learn till 8. My DD is 5.5 and just does not have the ability yet. I Just tell them to wrap the string around the bunny ear and then down the rabbit hole.

We used a poem:

Make a tee-pee
Pull it through
Make it tight so we can hide
Make a mountain
Around we go
Here's your arrow

Great question! My daughter just turned 5 and I have been thinking about this for the last week or so too. I remember learning when I was in K but I figured it can't hurt to get started now. We'll see how that goes! I bought a book that has different laces/ribbons on each page so they can practice tying. We haven't used it yet, but it seems like it would be helpful.

I'll be checking back to get some more advice!

I saw this on a movie after they get the initial cross over then it is a "Loop, swoop and pull" (bunny ear loops, swoop them together and pull tight)

good luck. My older one didn't tie until 7.5, but my younger one is picking it up (at 5) much more easily. Probably all the watching big bro.

There is also a book that teaches kids to tie laces. Can't remember the name right now,but it is sitting at our house and it helps a lot.

Velcro!!!

I worked and worked with my daughter to no avail. Finally, at age eight, she figured it out on her own.

All I can remember was to call the loops bunny ears. My kids liked that!

Good luck!

They sell toys and learning aids for this, they look like a little shoe with a real shoelace that the child can tie and untie over and over again. I remember having something like that when I was little. Melissa and Doug makes one, it's so cute, looks like a tiny high top sneaker :) Also, just the other day on Pinterest I saw the idea to draw shoes on a piece of cardboard and punch holes through for the laces, then just lace with a real shoelace and practice that way.

The bunny (lace) jumps over the log (thumb), hides under the log, and then pops out the other side!
