I have a 3-wk old, and suddenly today I am noticing clear little crystals on his belly when I change his diaper. 3 times so far today, and they're there each time. I haven't changed the brand of diapers (using disposables until he is big enough for the other diapers we got). Anyone have any ideas? (I have a message in to his dr., but am anxious while waiting for a return call). Thanks!
I think its the diapers. We switched to the organic, no dyes, chlorine free etc diapers made by, "Seventh Generation". They are still disposable just not so bad for the baby.I think the big corporate diapers are junk, just my opinion it just seems like they fall apart. Those crystals are from the inside of the diaper coming out, It doesnt seem like this is good for the baby.

That is from the diaper itself. That is what they put in disposables to make them absorbent. The only way to get rid of it is to change more often or switch to cloth. We use cloth because I do not like all the chemicals up against my babies skin, but it probably will not do any harm. I would not worry to much about it.

It is the gel from the diaper. When the diapers get wet they absorb the urine and it is held in crystalized gel particles. You will notice it more when a diaper is REALLY wet and full or when it has been worn for a longer period of time. NO big deal.
Tip for the future - make sure a diaper or pull-up never goes through the wash. What a mess when it finally explodes from all the water!!! :)

It's from the diaper. Even if you are using the same brand, it is probably coming out because your son is peeing more and the diaper is over loaded. Either change the brand to a more expensive one with denser "cloth" paper or change his diapers more often. I worried about the crystals and would always wash my son with water when ever this happened. Also I switched to cloth diapers. They have tiny cloth diapers out now even to fit premature babies. Good luck!

It is probably silica gel that is found in most name brand diapers. (I've seen that with both of my children, it's kind of in the form of clear small rubbery beads that's left after the diaper is used.) The silica get is in there to absorb any remaining moisture. You could try switching to Seventh Generation or any other "green" brand. They work just as well, are better for the environment, and healthier for babies!
Hope that was helpful!

These are probably the superabsorbent crystals inside the diaper. I'd change brands--Tushies brand (found at Whole Foods, maybe other places) uses wood pulp instead of the superabsorbent polymer--or switch to cloth diapers. We used cloth throughout our daughter's diaperwearing years. She never had diaper rash and toilet trained before age 2 (cloth diapers give "biofeedback" that superabsorbents don't)! Diaper services take care of the laundry, so it's a great system.

Hi P.! My son is now almost 3 YEARS (I still can't believe it!) but those little crystals are from the diaper. That probably means he is filling the diaper to capacity and those little crystal fragments just come off the diaper. We always used Huggies and I noticed that from time to time, up until a month or so ago when he was potty trained. Don't worry - nothing is wrong with your baby! I got nervous the first time I saw them, too! :)It might be time to move up to the next size diaper for more absorbency or just wipe those weird little crystals away. Let me know if you learn it's something different, but that's what it was for us. Enjoy your little peanut!

If they are kind of soft "crystals" it is probably the gel they use in the diaper to absorb the wetness. I noticed that Pampers burst out of it if the diaper gets too wet, in Huggies I didn't notice it much (usually the first diaper change of the day).

The little beads/crystals are just from the water absorbent material in the diapers. It takes a fair amount of liquid to get them to leak out, so it could be you didn't notice them before because he didn't make as much urine when he was littlier. I had the same problem with my son. As long as he doesn't have a fever, and he had normal number of wet diapers and normal number of poops, I wouldn't worry about it.

I experienced this when my twins (now 3 yrs. old) were in diapers from time to time. Is the diaper really wet when you have seen the crystals? I panicked the 1st time I saw it, but I came to the conclusion that it is the combination of a lot of urine and the diaper (pamper, huggies) that formed it. I may be off base, but I didn't worry about it because it seemed to show up only when they were really wet. Of course, it is always good to check in with you baby's pediatrician. Best of luck!

Hi there!
Don't worry or stress - that's just his pee! =P I find the same thing in my daughter's diaper all the time. Here, I found a web article for you:
Parents are often concerned when they find crystals in the diaper. By far the most common cause of these crystals is urate--something normally found in urine. And when the concentration is high, crystals form. They can be hard, but they are most often soft, like tiny cubes of Jell-O. They can be pale or clear, but often have an orange tinge, leading many parents to be concerned about blood.
Urate crystals are more common when kids are dehydrated, but are also common in healthy, well-fed babies. The inner lining of the diapers can also contain moisture-absorbing crystals that sometimes leak out if there is a little tear in the diaper. Urate crystals are not painful to babies. If your pediatrician suspects these are a different type of crystal, the material can be tested at the lab. Urate crystals are most common in the first few months of life.

However, my son had crystals in his diaper when he was around 1 1/2 weeks old, and it was actually his urine that had crystalized (it also had a pinkish or orangish tint). What you are probably seeing are small silicon crystals from the diaper. They are in the diaper to absorb moisture (like those little packages in pill containers and dry food. Just wipe them off with the wipes. I see them more often when the diaper is really full. Not sure why they leak out sometimes and not others. We had them when they were overfull on Pampers but I second the opinion about pampers Swaddlers. Love them! Seem softer and the huggies leak on my daughter. It's the gel junk they put in disposables to absorb urine. It seeps back out of the lining and gets on the baby. For his science fair experiment one year, my son tested different brands of diapers to see which one did a better job of retaining the absorbent material when wet. Without going into all the details, he found that Pampers absorbs better for where a boy wets, and Huggies absorb better for where a girl wets. The store brand and Kirkland both absorbed okay, but the absorbent beads quickly passed through the liner that "protects" the baby's skin.

Hi P.!
While in Nursing school, I learned that some newborns may get "urate crystals". These are a sign of dehydration in some, while in others it is just their bodies getting use to breast milk/formula.
According to Dr. Greene (a pediatrician) "By far the most common cause of these crystals is urate--something normally found in urine.
If your pediatrician suspects these are a different type of C., the material can be tested at the lab. Urate crystals are most common in the first few months of life. "
Now if you're sure that the crystals aren't coming from your 3-week-old, but are a result of the diaper lining, I might suggest Pampers Swaddlers and Papers Cruisers. I've never had a problem with these diapers on my son, and they have yet to leak! Huggies, on the other hand... not so much.
Good Luck, and hopefully this info helped out a little.

Dear P.,
First, congratulations on your sweet little baby boy!
(My precious little one is 12 now and outweighs me by about 25 pounds).
Anyway, I can practically guarantee that the "crystals" you are describing are coming from the diaper itself. I have seen it many times before. Disposable diapers are made of materials that soak up liquid and actually turn to a kind of crystal looking gel. As long as he is not getting irritated by it, I don't think there should be cause for alarm, especially if they are mushy when you touch them. You can try a different type of disposable diaper to see if perhaps the lining against his skin is a little stronger and the "crystals" don't seep through. Little boys pee in the front of their diaper so that would be my guess as to why you are only seeing them on the tummy area. My daughter actually was allergic to the fibers and absorbing particles in disposables, and believe me, you will know if that is the case. There are also disposable diaper liners that you can buy in the diaper aisle. They are not made of the same thing. You can try that especially at night time. They will absorb the liquid first and it's my guess that will alleviate the "crystals". My children never had diaper rash, with the exception of my daughter until I switched her to cloth diapers. The secret is....letting them air out as much as possible. Unless you are in public or something, don't be so quick to just put another diaper on. You can get "potty pads" for the couch or bed or crib so they can't soak anything and just let them air out as much as possible. I found that my kids being used to not having a diaper 24/7 made potty training so easy.
I hope that's not info overload. Good luck and enjoy your baby!

Hi P.,
If the crystals have a gelitin-like base then what it most likely is that the diaper was overly wet and it started to break apart. That happened when my baby was in diapers at the time being and my doctor told me that was the cause of the crystal-like stuff.
Hope it helps.

If fold the really wet diaper in half then squeeze the outside together in your hands you can feel the gel squish around inside you can try this with water to get it extra wet. It is possible that the diaper has torn a bit, and the absorbent material the diaper uses between the layers has fallen onto your baby's skin. When urine soaks into a disposable diaper it solidifies when it meets the absorbent chemicals inside, creating little crystals. Try ripping open a used diaper to see if the crystals inside are the same as on your baby's belly.

The crystals are probably coming from his diapers. Take one of his diapers and get it wet, then cut open the center of the diaper and you will see that they are the same crystals. I find them in my daughters diapers sometimes.

Hi,
This is the dessicant that is put inside the diaper to collect the wetness. I'm thinking that it's coming out. Perhaps there are rips or holes on the inside of the diaper large enough for them to come out. The dessicant is not supposed to come out. By the way, there is some debate on the safety of dessicants used in baby diapers. If you're concerned, you can do some research on it. Hope this helps!

Those are just the little moisture absorbers from his disposable diaper. Nothing to worry about!

Hi P., first of all congratulations on the baby!! The crystals that you are seeing are from the diaper, it is the absorbant material on the inside of the diaper and will NOT harm your baby at all. It is completely non-toxic.. the same material is in many breast pads for nursing. I wouldn't worry about it being on your baby, just wipe it off when you change the diaper. He may be over filling the diaper causing that to happen, try checking the diaper more frequently and it may not happen. I'm not sure which brand you are using but I found the cheaper brands do that sooner than say Papmers. Good Luck.

depend on the color of crystals. if it is an orangish red color my son had it in his diaper but it was that he wasnt getting enough to eat and I switched to bottle feeding as I didnt produce enough milk. if it is clear which is my guess it is what happens when the diaper gets too over loaded and it is just part of the diaper. they arent hard but clear. my guess if he is changed more often you will not see them as often. boys pee and spray upward so they have more leakage and usuage of the front area of the diapers. not sure if this helps but figured i would share

I believe they are the absorbant material in the diaper. Are they kind of soft and rubbery? I remember them on my kids when I changed diapers. It has been 6 years. I hope that is all it is. Enjoy your beautiful child. We are blessed to be moms.

I have had the same problem with our diapers. We use Huggies and it does say somewhere on the box in fine print that you may see small gel like crystals on the baby after use. It says just wipe them off with a wipe. It doesn't happen very often but I do still see them after 22 months of diapers. It's not very reassuring since I really don't know what they will do to the babies skin/system. I hope it's just the diapers.

It's the stuff in the diapers. They use the same thing for the nursing pads. I noticed them on myself & on my baby. I had one break open once, my little girl got into a kiddie pool with a diaper on & the stuff was everywhere.

The first time I saw this I started crying. I was so freaked out. Then I found out, it is just the material that absorbs the liquid in the diaper. Try changing the baby a little more often. I know you are probably changing the baby a ton. But, they pee so much when they are this little, it is almost constant. Otherwise, try seventh generation, or a more natural disposable. You didn't say what you were using, but when it happened to me, it was with huggies and pampers. I a not sure if it happens with seventh generation; but I haven't had any problems, and my son is now 14 months. Good luck!

The crystals are from the diaper. We were using Huggies and noticed that this happened a lot with that brand. We switched to Pampers and have not had this problem since.

No worries! It's just the absorbant material from the dispo diapers. I usually notice it there when the diapers too full, like in the mornings or after a long nap.

Happens to my son sometimes if the diapper is left on to long. It's from the diapper, nothing to worry about. You might want to change it more often.

I would wash him with lukewarm water between changes so any left over residue of urine or such. Baby cleanser tissues sometimes not good to use over long period. Clean water is always the best. Also you might take a close look at the brand of diaper you are using. I found that Pamper is the best choice for baby under 6 months old due to the material they selected. I had never found any problem with my four children. But I do found problem with other brands especially Huggies that often gave my babies rash after a long period wearing them. You might take advantage of the hot weather and let the baby expose to the fresh air a couple hours without diaper to let the skin breathes since hot weather often causing rash on babies a lot.
I hope you might find my sharing useful. Good luck

It used to happen to me when either the diaper was too full and/or we used a cheaper brand of diapers. They are from the material in the diapers. We never noticed them with Huggies or Pampers but we were also careful not to let him go to long without changing. We stopped using the cheaper brands because we saw them every time.
Thanks,

Tiny crystals or gell-like beads can sometimes leak (explode...)out of an overfilled diaper. Maybe ready to move up to the next size for enough capacity?

It's from the disposable diapers. It usually happens when they're pretty wet so maybe change him a little more frequently and you won't see the crystals.

I never noticed this when I was using cloth diapers, but I think that the inside of some disposables comes out and those are the crystals that you see.

I have noticed that with my kids. I think it is the disposable diaper padding leaking through on to their skin when it gets too saturated.
I would be interested to hear what your doctor says.

Hi P.,
It's the diaper. When diapers get to wet the material that is used inside the diaper crystalizes and if the diaper gets to soaked it can come out of the inside of the diaper and onto the little one.

Hi P.,
It sounds like it's just coming from the diaper. I have an 8 month old, who when I change him I notice the same thing. It's been off/on since he was little, don't think it's anything to worry about. If you are noticing it after he has been asleep for a long period of time, you may just need to change him before he goes to sleep/more often. Hope this helps.
