Crying 9 Month Old

Once a tooth breaks through the skin does it still hurt? My 9 month old has been crying a lot the last 3 days for no reason. Her 1st tooth broke the skin 4 days ago. She's been worse than when she was teething! She pushes me away but then tries to cuddle me. She'll be sitting on the floor playing and just starts crying really hard all of the sudden. I can sometimes get her to calm down after 5 to 10 minutes. But then we'll be sitting there playing a game and she'll start again. I did try giving her teething tablets just in case and it didn't seem to help.

It doesn't look like she has others coming though. But the tooth she just got only reared its ugly head 2 days before it broke through.

She isn't running a fever. She doesn't seem sick. She is occasionally rubbing her mouth. She seems extra tired, but she keeps waking up every 2 hours at night (she usually sleeps through the night).

I'm thinking of calling the doctor tomorrow.

What can I do next?

I think that the gums will still be sore after the tooth comes in. The gum is in a new position and the tooth has pushed thru tissue causing it to stretch.

I also suggest that she has at least one other tooth working it's way up. In my memory cutting teeth is a process and not a one time event, followed by another one time event.

Another part of a new tooth is her getting used to this extra hard piece in her mouth. She may be biting her tongue or cheek, perhaps not hard enough to break the skin but hard enough for her to feel the pinch.

I agree with giving her ibuprofen at bedtime and to continue giving her something to chew on. Treat her as if she's cutting teeth and see if that helps.

Have you given her ibuprofen? Try dosing her just before bed to see if that helps. Should help get her through 6 hours or so if it is teething pain.
Could she have an ear infection or swimmer's ear? The not sleeping well makes me think maybe she has some pressure in her inner ear (gets worse when lying down). Good luck.

I have found that teething can be so disrupting in so many ways to little ones! And their mouths can definitely hurt after the tooth cuts. I have had good results with using Orajel and/or taking a wet baby washcloth and putting it in the freezer to be ready for them to suck on. Just try to be patient right now because I have heard it said that if we had to go through teething as adults, we would have to be hospitalized since it is so painful! Mine have always gotten fever and diarrhea in addition to being grumpy and more sleepy. My middle daughter already got her two-year molars at around 14 months! Enjoy and hang in there!

Probably has more than 1 tooth coming in. Plus the one that just broke through is soar around the gum area and your Daughter is not used to having this THING in her mouth. Give her Tylonal and Orajel during the day and then Motrin at night as needed obviously. If she is not crying dont give her any meds, but I gave my daughter Motrin at night for awhile when she had her first tooth come in.

You can't always tell when a baby is teething. Every baby is different, some show lots of signs, some a few and others nothing until you suddenly see a tooth. I've experienced all of them with mine. And some babies have tremendous pain, some mild, some none She's probably still teething. You may need to double up or more on the teething tabs. because her pain is acute. If they're homeopathic tabs they won't hurt her even when you give double or triple. Even so sometimes that does little. Have you tried a cold, clean washcloth or any of the frozen teethers?

My son would get ear infections without a fever. He had a certain cry that meant "ear infection". I'd call the doctor just to be sure.

Call the doctor in the morning. I would give Tylenol or Motrin before bed for comfort. Teething is very painful, sometimes they can cut two teeth in a row, so another could be ready to break through. It could also be her ears, so it is best to get it checked out.

I would call the doctor, but are you sure that she doesn't have other teeth breaking through? My son used have multiple come in at once (one time he had 4!), so maybe she is still teething and you just haven't realized it? Good luck!

She could have more teeth working their way up. My 9 month old has 5 teeth through and 2 more coming up at the same time. All 3 of my kids usually had at least 2 working though at the same time, sometimes 3.

Also, another common thing around teething time is ear fluid/infection.

A call to the doctor just to rule out the ears is a good thing. Mine never tugged at their ears. The only clue I had that there was an ear infection was they kept waking up at night.

Hope she gets to feeling better soon!
