I was wondering if your child had cradle cap when they were babies, do they still show signs of it as older toddlers. My daughter is now 2 1/2 and occasionally has what looks like cradle cap--she is blonde so maybe I jsut don't notice it all the time but I was her hair every other day.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you for all your replies. I have been using Head and Shoulders and I will see how that works after a week or so. If that doesnt work I will go down the list of suggestions here.

Thanks again~you ladies are great.

Both my kids had it and head and shoulders helped throught out the process.( the pediatrician recommended it )way before they were one, it was all gone. when my cousin was a baby (she is a blond) she had it till she was about 3, i believe. It seems as if it more common to last longer if they are blonds. Then again her mom didn't know about head and shoulders and neither did i. That was 13 years ago. My kids are 3 and 7.

Cradle cap seems to come and go for my son, but he is only 16mos old. If you only wash the hair/scalp and don't treat it with oil, the CC won't go away. I've taken olive oil (the hairdresser told me to use baby/mineral oil) and massaged that in to his scalp with a soft toothbrush (gently and only on the CC areas) and then washed his hair. In one week a bad case went away. If in question about what it really is, consult with your pediatrician. Good Luck!

My son had cradle cap as a baby and I thought he still had cradle cap when he was a toddler, so I didn’t worry about it, but when I took him for his check up before kindergarten, they looked at it under a special light and said it was fungus. So to get rid of it, we had to alternate shampoos using Neutrogena T-Gel and Selsom Blue. I'd just ask her doctor next time your in.

Selsun Blue and Head and Shoulders are both toxic and should especially not be used on children. Even if these products work, is it worth compromising your childs delicate system?Their systems are much too small to process the dangerous chemicals found in most commercially available bath and body products including the ones marketed to children. I have two articles containing this information that was published on 2 very reputable medical journals but they are too long to copy and paste them here. I can send them to you if you wish. Try the health food stores for shampoos that are chemical free or Arbonne for the Intelligence Oil. Good luck!

Someone told me to use a teaspoon of olive or cooking oil and let it soak in their scalp. It worked wonderfuly without having to buy a "certain product" for 1 use. Try it, it worked awesome for me!

My 2 3/4 year old daughter is a strawberry blonde and still has "cradle cap." She also has eczema though. It is a possibility that your daughter also has the condition if you or her father has really dry skin or dandruff. Washing with soap or shampoo may not help, but make it worse. Try something gentle, like Aveeno Soothing Relief Creamy Wash or even dove for sensitive skin. Also luke warm water is best for retaining moisture in the skin. None of these with stop the condition completely, just help control outbreaks and make it less noticable.

My kids both had cradle cap and I've never had it return once we got rid of it. But the only way I could get rid of it, on their doctor's advice, was Head and Shoulders shampoo. None of the traditional remedies work (baby oil, OTC cradle cap treatments, etc). I used the Sensitive Head and Shoulders and it cleared up in a week. Just make sure if you use it, not to get it in her eyes because it will sting.

Hi J. M- I was actually reading an article today in the what to expect series- toddler years book, and one of the common problems they mentioned was ringworm of the scalp that has similar symptoms to cradle cap, but occurs in children 2- ten years of age. This can be easily treated, it sounds like, but definitely necessitates a trip to the doctor. Best wishes and good luck!

My son is just getting ready to turn 3 and he has cradble cap again!
We even took him to the pediatrician and he said that it was just one of those weird things that kids get and he'll grow out of it eventually.
We had a friend that told us to use a dandruff shampoo and that will help clear it up. We did it a couple of times and it did look a lot better...

Use selsun Blue for craddle cap it will completely disappear after a few applications. Use a soft gentle brush to wash hair.
Also if your baby is in the sun alot make sure you put a hat on or sunscreen becuase it could be sunburn peeling from too much sun.

Hi, J.,

My daughter had bad cradle cap when she was little, and still gets it on the odd occasion now and she's 4 1/2. It usually happens when we're not diligent enough in getting the shampoo all rinsed out of her hair.

What really works well for me in getting it out is putting canola oil (about 2 tbsp) on her head before we shampoo, and rubbing it in well where the cradle cap is. I let it sit for about 10 minutes and then shampoo her hair - the cradle cap comes right away and her hair is soft.

I know you've had lots of suggestions, but my little one is fair haired too. The doctor called it excema, and it is related to an allergy. I'm not suggesting yours has one, but it does make the flaky scalp worse when she eats certain foods.

Also, washing every other night has been a great help. The scalp has natural oils. It needs to do it's own thing sometimes and we usually scrub them all away. Good luck!

J.,
My daughter had remaining cradle cap until that age as well. I am guessing that your daughter also has some eczema on her skin. The reason it is still there is the mineral oil and petroleum based products that are being sold. They are the two most commonly used fillers, and are awful for our kids' skin. I spent four years searching for a solution, and finally found one last year. I would love to share it with you, and give you a few samples. Please let me know if you are interested! After four years of looking, it took 6 days to clear up my daughter's lingering eczema and cradle cap.

My oldest son had severe cradle cap. Little did I realize it was a prelude to eczema! He is now 2 1/2 and doesn't have it on his head anymore.

My youngest also had it pretty bad, no eczema, though. The doctors suggested I didn't wash their hair every day. Try to let the natural oils build up and then when you DO wash, use a mild baby shampoo (I used Cetaphil liquid soap, but it's a little expensive) and then take one of those dense, soft-bristled baby brushes to brush the flakes away.

Hello,

I tried several items on the market to rid cradle cap for my daughter. With many unsuccessul products, I found one that actually worked! There is a product that it sold at Babies R' US spefically made for this condition. I don't recall the name but it comes with a brush, and a couple of treatment bottles. I use it on my daughter when she was an infant. It worked wonders! The cradle cap disappeared! Good luck!
