I have a 3 year old son that still has cradle cap,or just a really dry scalp. I have tried everything and I just don't know what to do anymore. When he was a baby the Dr. gave a Rx but it didn't seem to help so I tried head and shoulders and it did help for a while, but now with winter it seems to be worse. I have also tried veg. oil but that didn't last long either. It wouldn't be a big deal but it does bother him. If anyone has an idea of what I can do that would be great.

What can I do next?

My daughter, who is 6 has had this off and on for years. We've tried the dandruff shampoo, the baby oil and nothing worked - it kept coming back. She also had it behind her ears. A few months ago I started using Morrocan Oil on her hair (I use it on mine) and lo and behold - after a week or so we noticed that her cradle cap was completely gone. Then we started applying a little of the Morrocan Oil behind her ears and yippee - it took care of the cradle cap behind her ears as well. So after every wash now we use the Morrocan Oil. It looks like the cradle cap is gone for good. Good luck, I know what a pain it can be!!!

Have you tried other dandruff shampoo other than head and shoulders? My pedi recommended Selsun Blue when my little one was a baby and it helped.

Good luck!

V.,

I second the Arbonne response.

Their baby line is outstanding and doesn't have all of the bad things in it that other products have.

Did you know the reason most brand name baby shampoos are "tear-free" is because they have anesthetic in it? Arbonne's products are gentle because they don't have any harsh chemicals or fragrances in them.

They don't contain any animal products or by-products. Vegan certified.

Also, they don't contain mineral oil. This is refined crude oil and is just a cheap filler.

Hope this info helps.

Take care and God bless!

I second the recommendation for the Mustela Newborn Foam Shampoo. Mustela also makes a cream for cradle cap that worked really well for my son.

We use Mineral Oil and it has worked very well. You can buy it at the drug store.

I used a product called Gentle Naturals Cradle Cap Treatment. It's in a greenish blue bottle in the baby section at Walmart. Just follow the directions on the bottle. I used a very fine tooth comb to loosen the scales and comb them out. Then I shampooed twice. It took several treatments for my DD but she had it really bad. It was hard to see because of her hair. The Dr. told me to use the store brand of Neutrogena T-gel. It didn't work.

If you haven't already, you may want to try changing his shampoo and see if that helps, too.

Even 'gentle' OTC baby shampoo can agitate a dry scalp. We use Arbonne Baby Care and it cleared up in a hurry. You do have to 'scrape' or pick at it with a baby oil or lotion. Otherwise the crust just perpetuates itself and does not allow the skin underneath to moisturize.

Arbonne has helped so many kids with excema and psoriasis, adults use it too. My niece cleared up in less than a week with heat spots of excema at the bends of elbows, wrists groin and knees. They have baby wash (hair and body in one), lotion, baby oil (no mineral oil - very bad for skin), diaper cream and spf30 sunscreen.

The products last a long time because they are concentrated. You can also get a discount without having to sell it or buy minimum amounts.
Hope this helps.

I feel you pain. My 3 year old has the same problem. It would cause her hair to fall out. Poor little girl. Her doctor said you use t-gel or t-sal every other day, but when I do put it on her hair and then let it sit for 10 minutes before I rinse it out. It has made the world of difference!

Not sure if any of the other responses have helped but my son had cradle cap really bad. He had a head full of curly hair and pulled it all out till he was bald. Although there was no more crustyness He itched hisself awake for 8 months and I pretty much tried everything everyone recommended and the only thing that worked was Tea Tree Oil. You can find it at any store in their Health food section but I just ended up using Paul Mitchell Tea Tree Shampoo ( jcpenny, sephora, hair salon inside walmart, etc) and he hasnt scratched another day. What my son actually had was a fungal infection under his scalp that many dr's dont know about or are too lazy to even check. Tea Tree is a natural anti-fungal derived from a plant (tea tree leaves)

Could be that all the fusing with his scalp is aggrevating the problem. I'd stick with a mild shampoo and conditioner. If the problem persists or gets worse, ask his doctor at his next check up if it warrants a further look by a pediatric dermatologist.

At 3 years we are probably talking excema. Ask your doctor directly if that is what it is. My son had a very dry scalp problem once that we cleared up with a "tar" shampoo. Ask your pharmacist about one.

I read that oil can make it worse. When my son had it, I would gently use a fingernail brush while there was shampoo in his hair. It was easier to losen it up when his head was wet. I would then rinse use conditioner and rinse again. It got better with every wash/scrub. Good luck.

Hi V.,
Well 3 seems a little old but just try this, I used it on my little girl. It is by Mustella Foam shampoo for newborns it washes away flakes associated with cradle cap.

I love it she is 1 now and occasionally still use it her hair her hair gets really oily fast, but just try it ok. Let me know how it goes. You can find Mustella baby products at Babies R Us. You will actually see the scales/flakes old skin come off, when you comb his hair.

I still use N1 also Bebe, Dermo-Cleansing it is for hair and body too. Also used for newborns, but I just notice that her skin is so smooth if I stop I notice a little dryer and different feel to her skin.

I love their baby products, their lotion is great too.

Good luck ok

bye

When my youngest was an infant she had a bad case of cradle cap as well. Her pedetrician recommended that I use the head and shoulders brand of shampoo and then to take my fingernail or a baby comb and comb out the dry skin. I see that you stated you used the head and shoulders but did you do the second step and try and remove the dry skin? If not, maybe give that a try. Also the pedetrician said not to use any oils as they seem to work at first but actually only make the condition worst.

My son who is 5 had ezcema as a baby and we always fought against dry patches on his scalp until he grew out of it last year. We started with Selsun Blue when he was an infant, then moved to T-Gel when he was older and they both worked, but when he turned about 2, he started getting this thick dry skin on his scalp. If you tried to pull a piece off it would pull his hair out, too. It was terrible. His pedi recommended Nizoral shampoo. He said to use it every other day, shampoo, then let it sit on the scalp for 5 minutes, then rinse. Within a few weeks the condition was completely gone and we've only had to use it once since then. He usually gets this dry scalp in the cold, dry months of the year. Good luck!

Many years ago my first daughter developed Cradle Cap as well. I took her to Childrens Medical Center In Dallas, Texas and the doctor told me to use Selsun Blue Medicated shampoo at least 3 times a week. He even said if I didn't like the way it left her hair smelling that I could rewash her hair with baby shampoo after shampooing w/the Selsun Blue. It worked great at clearing it up. It took a couple of weeks at least to clear it up completely. Also try not to shampoo their hair everday as it strips away the natural oils that help condition the hair and scalp. Cradle Cap stems from the scalp being to dry and seems to flare up more in the wintery months. It also seems to more prevalent in fair colored hair children. My daughter had blonde hair.
I hope this helps, it worked for me.
Merry Christmas
