Could My 7-Week-old Be Teething Already???

My 7-week-old baby boy has started drooling quite a bit and has started rubbing his gums with his fists when he gets really aggravated recently. The past couple of days I have also noticed that he's been chewing on his tongue a lot. He used to be a great napper and was only waking up only once or twice a night, but he's not sleeping as well any more either. Could he possibly be teething already? I didn't think that was supposed to happen until 5-6 months old, but what else could he be going through. Any advice would be helpful.

What can I do next?

Just some FYI links for you on the teething subject:

Perhaps ask your Pediatrician. It could be anything. It could be that he is hungry and this is his "rooting" or hunger reflex. Try feeding him more, or more often, and see what happens. When they are going through growth spurts, their feeding at night may also be affected...they will sometimes wake more and need to feed. Head's up. This is normal, if it is a growth spurt.

Here are some links:

I would suggest reading up on growth spurts etc., there will be MANY growth spurt occasions, and growth/developmental "phases" as the baby grows. A Great book is "What to Expect the First Year" by Arlene Eisenberg. Knowing what to expect EACH month per month of age, is timeless knowledge and very helpful. All growth & developmental phases can interrupt sleep patterns in a baby and their feeding needs.

Or perhaps something is irritating his mouth?
Is he sick or anything?

It does "look" like teething symptoms...but his age is young. So best to consult your Pediatrician and ask, or to rule out anything else. If he is having a growth spurt, he just may need to feed/nurse more.

Good luck, and take care,

Hi L. -
My son had his first two teeth (bottom ones) by the time he was 2 months old, so yours could very well be doing that as well. It also could be that your baby is hungry, so try upping his food.

The up side to early teething is that he will have all of his teeth before the average child and won't be throwing cranky tantrums when he's two. Also, he will probably be an early talker.

Good luck, Z

Definitely a possibility...my nephew was born with 2 teeth. My son had his first tooth at 2 months. Teeth just come when they want.

L.,

My sister had teeth at 2 weeks old, so yes it is possible. My kids acted like they were teething both around 3 months and then one got teeth at 9 months and the other was 10 months. You can never tell. It's horrible. I've taken my kids to the Dr thinking they were sick and it's been teething, but the Dr can never 100% confirm it. I would just hang in there the best you can.

Hi L.,
I think one reason he may be chomping on his fists is because he finally has enough control over his hands to get them to his mouth. Hurrah! Sometimes excitement can look like aggravation also.
Of course you know your son best, so if he seems to be teething already (yikes!), your pediatrician will best know how to handle his discomfort.

Great advice from everybody else. Just wanted to add that babies can start teething early on, when the tooth is breaking through the jaw bone, but the tooth could take months to pop through the gum.
