Constipation - Saint Charles, IL

Hello -
My little man has only pooped a couple of times...small little pellets...in the last two days. No where near his usual amount. I've tried adding more fiber (prunes to cereal, wheat germ to yogurt) and increasing water intake. Nothing. Late this afternoon he's started to refuse water probably because I keep pushing it on him. He's been eating good.

I am wondering if there is anything else I should be doing and when does this become serious?

Thank you!!

So What Happened?

Hi All - many thanks for all the recommendations. I took almost all your advice...starting with cutting out most of his dairy, then fed him a lot of grapes and mandarin oranges and finished off with a bath and massage. By 5pm he was a poopin' man! Thank you again. I will have to watch how much dairy I give him...I think that might have a lot to do with it!

When my little guy had this problem as an infant, I'd give him a teaspoon of light Karo syrup in his bottle (4 oz.) As he got older, the constipation problem disappeared, but occasionally if it flares up I'll put the syrup in his milk sippy cup. If that doesn't work, I'll use Little Tummys brand laxative drops. My dr said to give babies under two only .25mL the first day, increase to .5mL the second day. If it still persists, then go to the doctor. Best wishes!

We had this problem with our daughter and our doctor recommended aloe vera juice. We found it at The Vitamin Shoppe. It worked after the 1st dose (we just mixed it in her bottle). Good luck!

You can give him mango juice or nectar. That always helped my son when he was that age.

Here's a couple things I've tried that have worked for us. I've given my kids oral laxative - I can't remember the name, but it's a liquid you use through an applicator. It's available in the kids drug section. That has worked for us - he might just be backed up and once he passes the harder stool, the flood gates (hopefully) will open.

Maybe give him more prunes too. I will give my kids just the prunes with no cereal (since the cereal is binding) and that tends to move things along.

Mandrin oranges always worked for my kids, and prune juice with water.

Try a warm bath followed by a gentle abdominal massage. After he is fully relaxed play "Toes on Your Nose" He should still be able to enjoy this game, though I'd play it while he is on the changing pad just in case it works too well. For details on the techniques I am reffering to you can use the "search" feature on my blog. Though my tips are mostly for infants, the ones I mentioned can work just as well for toddlers. http://tripibabytips.blogspot.com

Hi Courtney,
I can not express enough just how well infant acidophilous works for my son. It is all natural. It is actually the same good bacteria that is in yogurt, but in a powder form! My son has been taking it since he was 6 weeks old (he is 2 now).
I was giving him 1/2 teaspoon every day in his formula, and as he got older, we started to give him a 1/2 teaspoon every other day.
Let me tell you that he has NEVER been constipated. There are other benefits to acidophilous. We get ours at Fruitful Yield, but I believe you can get it at any health food store.
I am not a health food nut at all, but my MIL told me about this stuff. I asked the pedi about it first and he said it was fine to give.
Please give this to your son and you will be amazed at how well it works. Remember that it is not a medicine and is all natural!
Hope this helps your son!
K.

My first one had issues with constipation for her first 2 years or so. Food/water changes didnt seem to help. Then we found out about Glycerin suppositories. They are totally safe. They make them in two sizes/doses, adult and kid. Our doc said for a baby under 1 to use half a child dose, once over age 1 use a whole one. I was kind of nervous! But we did it, she was only a month old the first time constipation became an issue, and we used them on and off for the next 2 years.

Its NOT a medicine. All it does is melt inside of them, soften up the poop, and makes it easy for them to push out. Once she got older, granted, putting a suppository in wasnt her favorite thing to have done, but it was worth it to have her fill her diaper with 2-3 days worth of backed up yuck! Sometimes we had to use them every couple days for a week or so, then she would get back to normal.

Now we have had kid #2 and used them a couple times with her too. With this one, just the act of putting it in makes her push a lot harder and that gets things going, it rarely even has a chance to melt.

Reduce the amount of dairy intake for a day or two (or stop all together), and you'll see a huge difference. Then add it back in small quantities. It's very easy to give a toddler way more dairy than they need and dairy is a huge constipator. We had the same issue.

Equal parts prune juice and water will do the trick. I usually do about 2 ozs of each. Good Luck!

When my son was born, we had problems with him not pooping as often as he was supposed to. What always worked for us was heating up his milk with a couple leaves (2 or 3) of "yerbabuena" or spearmint. Let it heat up enough to get a light taste of the mint in the milk, (but not boil.) Then strain the milk with one of those coffee (paper) strainers. (sorry, I don't drink coffee so not sure what those are exactly called) Once the milk cools down, just feed it to him like normally and you'll see that it works every time. Only 2x did I have to give him 2 times before it worked, but it normally always worked with just one serving.
Good luck.

You might want to call your Dr. My son went through a period of being consipated. You can buy little fleet enemas for babies.

Hope this helps.

I would continue with the baby prunes in the jar. They always worked wonders with my son...and stay away from cheese!

Hi,

Give him Miralax. It is a unflavored powder that you can mix in with his drink. You give him half a capful twice a day. That is what my pediatrician told us to do and it worked. You can find it at Wal-Mart too.

Try to feed him lots of grapes (cut up small of course), and other fruits that are non-constipating. Stay away from bannanas and rice. I just got through poop issues with my 18 month old. He's not much of a water drinker, so the good fruits help. Just google search the name of the fruit and constipation. You'll see if that fruit is good for helping. Also stay away from too much dairy, I know that's hard, but it can be constipating.
