Considering Offering Language Lessons in Hockessin.

I am interested in people's opinions of a new business idea: language lessons for children in Hockessin, DE. Many private schools teach Spanish in grade school, but public schools do not. I would like to offer FUN!! Spanish, Italian, and French lessons during the day to preschoolers & Moms, and after school and evenings during the school year to elementary kids. I need to lease a space for the whole year, which is expensive here in Hockessin, so I would need to charge about $25/class to make it work. Is that too much? Is there a market, or are people just too busy to fit it in with all the soccer etc that kids want to do?

What can I do next?

I was just asking one of my co-worker where I could get inexpensive Spanish lessons. She recommended online classes as an option. I don't remeber the cost but it seemed around $50 for a semester (unsure how long). Also, that would be the cost for family as we could all access it and work the program together. Consider a family rate if you go the private lesson way. Good luck! BTW, I would consider handing out a flier also for the families I work with (North Wilm to Newark). THANKS!!

My advice to you is this....
don't rent a space; try to find moms that will pay for private lessons. You could go to their home, or they could come to yours. My children attend the Brandywine YMCA and they do give Spanish lessons with their preschool tuition.
I would try to solicit the Moms Clubs in the area. (I am a member of the Talleyville Moms Club). You could make up a flyer and ask all of the Moms Clubs, plus MOPs, Mothers of Multiples, etc. to post your flyer, etc.
I recently sent an e-mail to my moms club for a friend who is teaching piano lessons, and she got two new clients....so it is a good networking tool.
Also, why not ask the Moms Clubs if you can do a 6-week course, or something. You could have a weekly meeting with interested members and they could pay you. Just some thoughts.
Best of luck to you. If you do have a flyer or an e-mail to send out....just contact me privately. I will be more than happy to send it along to the Talleyville Moms Club.

Hi S.! Here's an idea - from a fellow Delawarean. Check with the Hockessin Activity Center (PAL) about offering classes through them. I know they sub-contract for a lot of classes. That way, you use the nice facilities of the PAL, and you get free advertising thru the County's Program Guide. Just a thought for someplace to start! Look thru the current guides & see what class charges are. They might have some ideas, too. But it may help keep the cost down.

S., I'm a homeschooling mom in Newark .. and there is a large homeschooling community in this area. If you opened your school to homeschoolers and offered the course at a reduced rate (most homeschool families are single income) you might be pleasantly surprised at the outcome. This would enable you to make more over the couse of the day .. and therefore your per class price could maybe be lower. Just a thought. You would most likely get homeschoolers from PA, MD, DE and possibly some from NJ.

I would not be able to go to the classes because i live to far away but i love the idea. I am trying to teach my daughter Spanish but it is really hard because i am the only on e in the family who speaks it. I would be greatful if a class opened up in my area. $25/day sounds a little high possibly. It depends a little on the income area you are in. I would consider offering a discount for a monthly package or for 1/2 year package pr even full year package commitment. If they pay in full upfront then maybe you can offer a little less per day.

If you know someone in the media, PA area that is willing to do this i would sign up! Good luck.

I think that is a great idea!! It would be wonderful to have a place to go outside of school for language lessons for my son and daughter. I love the idea of including parents too. My son is 4 and he gets Spanish at preschool, but I have no idea what he is saying because I don't speak Spanish.
Fabulous idea - you should run with it!!!

You should offer your services to the local pre-schools. When my daughter was in pre-school, they had a French teacher come in once a week to work with the children. It was very popular.
