Considering Becoming a Nurse-need Advice

I am considering going back to school for an accelerated 2nd degree (BSN) to become an RN. I have been home with my kids for the last 5 years, which I loved, but now I would like to (and need to) return to work. The industry I was previously in has had a tremendous amount of downsizing and layoffs. I've been looking since June and have had no luck. I already have a degree in science, and have worked in the health (pharmaceutical) industry. My question is, are nurses happy for the most part with their profession? I know nothing is perfect, but is it a good career to have with a family? I would love the hear from any nurses out there about their overall job satisfaction. Thanks:)

What can I do next?

Although I am not a nurse, I work on the floor at a hospital, and for the most part I hear no complaints! whats really nice is that you get to work 3 12hr shifts, so you have 4 days off a week to spend with your little ones.

I own a home care company and it's a great option for Moms because you can write your own schedule and be home when the kids are there. Hospital shifts are long, but home care is a great fit for many Moms.

Hi J. K,
I've been having similar trouble, as I was laid off from my automotive job of 32 years & I wasn't sure what to do, as I was actually planning to retire, but wasn't given an opportunity. Michigan Works is paying for school if you've been laid off. $5K/yr for 2 yrs. Anyway, I interviewed a few Massage Therapists & Physical Therapists & it gave me new insight & I've made some new decisions. Once I talked directly to some persons who were in the business, I was able to move forward. I hope this helps a bit.

I am an MA who returned to school to become a PA. I LOVE my job...but I think that your passion has to be in healthcare for you to enjoy it. If you love it, you'll be great!
