My 7 1/2 month old son has a terrible cold on top of teething. He is fine during the day when he is upright and taking naps, but at night, he is having trouble sleeping because of everything sitting in his chest and head. I have a pillow under his mattress so that he isn't sleeping flat and I have been giving him menthol baths at night before bed. Does anyone have any advice as to something else that I can do to make him more comfortable at night so that he can sleep better and so that I can sleep better.

What can I do next?

I know I have my daughter's bed elevated w/ some 2x4's. I also have the vicks vapor plug in with a cool mist humidifer. I also put children's vicks vapor rub on her chest at night. I have also done Triminic (for children) and given her .5 ml. All that together seemed to help her.

Also, I have her on Enfamil Poly-Vi-Sol vitamins. That has helped her with not having colds for long periods of time or catching colds.

Hope that helps. I know it's hard, but it will soon subside.

Good luck!

I would use baby vicks on his chest, a humidifier in his room, and coryzalia (a homeopathic medicine made by boiron). That should help. I wouldn't give any other medicines or decongestants because his body really needs to do its thing to get the germs out.

Just a little tidbit, one thing that I have done with my daughter at night is to let her sleep in her carseat. We strap her in so she doesn't wiggle down, and then cover her, and she sleeps much better when she's sick that way than laying down. Plus, if she's in real pain, we'll give her Ibuprofen, but not more than three days in a row, cause that messes with their kidneys at that point. Anyways, I don't know if it will work with your baby, but it has with mine, so I thought I would pass it on.

Hi J.-

The best advice I can give is to use the nasal saline drops and a bulb syringe before he goes to bed and maybe once during the night if needed. The problem is that babies are nose breathers and any congestion can really cause trouble. If the symptoms last more than a week, it's a good idea to call the doctor. Hope he feels better soon!

They now make a Vicks for babies, it helps to open up their noses, just like ours, but is not as strong and safe for babies over I think 6 months. A cool mist vaporizer can also be helpful for him to breathe. And, most babies over 6 months can also take over the counter decongestants like Simply Stuffy or Dimetapp.
