Clothing for Newborn

I am due with a baby girl in October. I already have a 2 year old son, he was born in June and wore onesies all the time and light pj's at night during the first few months. I had a baby shower with him so pretty much every article of clothing he had was bought for me.
I am just trying to get an idea of what and how much I should be buying for her? I am beyond excited about being able to buy little girl clothes, so I have been getting things here and there, but will she mostly be in pajamas? My friend has 2 little girls both born in fall/winter and they were ALWAYS in pj's as infants. Do I really need much of anything else for the fall/winter months? I feel like I really won't be taking her out much since I have a toddler too and there's not much to do in the winter anyways. How many should I buy? I don't want to go overboard..Thanks and I'm sure I will have a million other random questions to ask before I have her!!

What can I do next?

I kept my son in sleepers till around 4/5 months. There is just no point in buying clothing before that. I think I had two "other" outfits. I then gave the sleepers to a friend.

You will have years to buy cute outfits.

Both of my sons were born in November. They lived in long and short sleeved onsies and in a fleece sack. I also had the footed pj's that zipped not snapped. But, to answer one of your questions, unless you are going for pics or somewhere special, pjs work just fine all through the winter. Buy however many that will keep you from doing laundry everyday :)

I would get a ton of sleepers, and maybe a couple of cute dresses for pictures/church.

My son was a December baby, and I got tons of cute outfits as gifts, but I never thought anything looked right on him but footed sleepers. Some outfits just look goofy until they're big enough to sit up on their own.

I'm pregnant with #2, and this baby is gonna live in footed sleepers for at least the first few months. If you see something adorable you just have to buy, get it in a larger size (I try to count ahead by months to see what the weather might be like when baby is wearing that size).

When I found out I was having a girl, I wanted to get her cute outfits so I went to Kohls and bought 2 adorable outfits....... she wore them twice and this is why.... they weren't cotton, once I got her home I wanted her to be comfy and I felt like the material they were made with just wasn't all that soft.....so, my 2 cents - buy comfy stuff:onesies, some pj's and pants to put over onesies when it gets a little chilly.....there will be plenty of cute the rest of her life...there are tons of cute cotton things...steer clear of the "not comfy" cute clothes..... Enjoy her!!!

I would go easy on clothes for now--you'll probably get a few more gifts. Make sure you can get through at least a few days without having to do laundry (so with blow-outs, spit up, and incidentals, maybe 5-8 sleepers). My kids were in sleepers a lot but they were fast growers and did not fit newborn sizes for long when they were born (maybe a week?). If you buy more than you need, keep tags on a few things in case the sizing is off. If your house is warm enough, sometimes a body suit is okay in the fall anyway. I usually dressed my kids normally and just threw a blanket over the carrier when we went outside. Enjoy the rest of your pregnancy!

my kids were always in pajamas over the winter months. Save your money for when she is older.

I had an August baby first, we got a lot of unisex clothes since we did not find out the sex until she was born. #2, a boy was born in November. He was in sleepers and onesies from #1 with pants and a long sleeve shirt or sweater when needed. We didn't buy much before he was born. We had a good amount, and they grow so fast and Christmas was just over a month later.
We went to the mall some just so I could get out of the house. A little bit much sometimes, but getting out was necessary.
She will wear whatever you put her in.

Heehee. I had the exact opposite situation. My daughter (4) was born in October and my son was just born in April.
I never seemed to have enough sleepers for my daughter so I bought tons for my son. I got plenty too...only it's too hot for him to wear them!
So I would say-yes-just buy lots of sleepers. :)
BTW, Carter's is clearancing out all their old stock and had sleepers for super cheap. And if you sign up w/ their club online they will send you a coupon code-or give you coupons in store. Just in case you didn't know. ;)
HTH!

I'm expecting #3 (next week!) and my other two are 15 and 12! I had a little shower, but needed to purchase many things on my own, which was fun! Old Navy has fabulous markdowns every week, and I frequent the Gymboree outlet here. I have also found preschool mom resales - these start up again in September/October around here, so check Craigslist under Baby/Kids in September by you! Resale shops too, where you can find brand names like Janie & Jack, etc. for a song! I like to dress my kids, so yes they have pajamas, but then we get dressed. A few pairs of shoes (Old Navy had ESPADRILLES!) and little boots, lots of hats, jacket, coat. I would definitely plan on having 5-10 outfits in each size. Sweaters go a long way in accessorizing. Pink/white/blue go with many outfits. Have fun!

Depending on how much you want to do laundry and how warm your house is. My baby was born in September and wore Sleep and plays 90% of the time. I did laundry I once a week and had 8 everyday rompers and 2 heavier ones for cold nights. But I also had a couple of cute outfits for when we were going out and about.

I did the sleepers for my boys (winter and fall) up till 6 months and even still after that. I did have a couple outfits for fun. I'm expecting my first girl (fall) and this is what I have (all garage sale and couple gender neutral from #1 & #2)...19 layettes, 5 sleep sacks (0-6months), 15 sleepers and 5 outfits. Since there will be both hot and cool days some of the sleepers are a thinner cotton, that's why I have so much (it's like 2 different seasons in a short time).
