Look for a battered womens shelter. They are always looking for clothes and the majority of them are given to those who do need them.
I cleaned out my closet and have a bunch of clothes to get rid of. Some of it still has the tags on it, and a lot is barely worn maternity clothes. I heard clothing drop boxes are selling the clothes! Which is usually where I get rid of them because its quick and easy, but I want it to go to a good cause, not someone selling them. Have you heard of this or have a better suggestion of where I could take them?

Take them to the woman/children homeless shelter or your local domestic violence safe house.
call your local battered women's shelter
or
see if there's a pregnant teen rescue area that could use the nice and new pregnancy clothes.
I don't drop clothes off in those bins because people steal from them in my area.
We like to donate to a local emergency family shelter. That way you know it's going to a good cause, and you get the tax write off.
I'd suggest donating them to one of these:
(Not sure where they are, but I got this info from the Catholic Diocese of Detroit's website)

A lot of those drop boxes do sell the clothes, for their own profit. There was an article in the paper a few months ago. You have to really read the box. The ones for Green Peace and some other company that starts with a G are all about profit. I prefer to give clothes to Goodwill or Salvation Army just because I know that even though they are sold, the money is used for good programs and I get a receipt. For the maternity clothes, you could look up a Catholic Charities or women's shelter. A coworker gives her clothes to a shelter for women and another is a home for pregnant teens. She also recently gave some work clothes to a place that helps women get back on their feet with training and job interviews and such.
The clothing drop boxes normally say what their affiliation is - I guess some could be for profit for someone, but most I have seen are affiliated with an organization - goodwill, human society, catholic charities, etc.
I donate all of mine and my daughters clothes to Hubbard House(the local domestic violence shelter). Many women and children in domestic violence situations have to leave their homes immediately and cannot take anything with them other than their clothes on their backs!
alot of them sell the clothes for local charitys.
Dress for Success accepts donations of interview clothing + accessories. I know there is one in Michigan but not sure how close to you.
Check w/ local pregnancy resource center to donate maternity clothes
of course they sell most of them....the money generated goes to their programs and to help their charity. They do give away alot of things to people who need them, too. I know that St. Vincent de Paul gives vouchers to people to go in and pick out what they need (appliances, furniture, clothes, etc.), plus they have everything for sale. So it's not like they're selling things for a profit.
keep on donating! it's appreciated by those in need :)

I'd take them to a place you can trust, like salvation army or a pregnancy counselling center.
Those drop boxes usually support a particular charity. If they don't need the items that are donated they sell them so they can buy the supplies they really need. For instance, one drop box I know of supports a shelter for the homeless and most of those are men. They would have no need for any clothing other than men's wear. I could easily see them running out of storage room for women's clothing and selling it.
The drop boxes are usually emptied and then taken to the store of whatever charity it is. for instance goodwill has stores that support the mentally impaired. catholic charities has stores st. vincent depaul has stores. they sell stuff and the profit goes into the charity. just be sure your donating it to a valid charity as there are those who scam
