Cloth Diaper Question - Bluffton,SC

So I received some very old prefolds from my mother-in-law (when I say very old I mean, they were my husband's when he was a baby!) I was concerned because they have little brown balls stuck inside the layers of the cloth diaper (specifically around the edges). I was paranoid they were insects eggs or carcasses...just the thought grosses me out. I figured I would ask if anyone knew what they were before using the middles as rags since that seems to be a waste of a potentially fine diaper. I just won't put it on my baby's little bottom before knowing what they are. Thanks.

What can I do next?

I know it can be nostalgic and kind of cool to use stuff from our childhood on our new babies, but anything that grosses you out and has things on it that you can't identify should be thrown out.

Grandma should get the biggest thank you and I would let her know how special it is that she saved things from DH's baby days. That does not mean you have any obligation whatsoever to use it.

Diaper rags are so inexpensive that you could just buy new ones and not spend your precious time cleaning/de-grossing/etc. these things. Good luck and congratulations on your new baby.

use the oldones to wax the car. there are plenty of websites to order some new ones I use the prefold as burb cloths and now as snuggles for my daughter. I have the pocket cloth diapers that use the insert style liners. save yourself the worry.

I agree with the others who recommend using a cloth diaper safe detergent (anything free and clear), and washing them in the hottest water possible. However, if they still don't look like something you'd put against baby's bottom, then using them to wax the car is good recycling! Prefolds are not that expensive (I know our budgets are tight, but really, they're not that expensive!), and you can order new ones online.

Are they bleached cotton, or unbleached cotton? If they are unbleached, they may just be a natural part of the cotton plant. If they are bleached (i.e. white), try washing them and see how they come out. Make sure you use a detergent that is ok for cloth diapers. www.Diaperpin.com has a bunch of tips, but we use Charlie's soap and love it. You just don't want to use a detergent that will cause build-up on your diapers, and most detergents these days will. :)

I wish I had been given some diapers to get started! :)

I Imagine a good hot wash would take out anything to be concerned about, however, buying new prefolds is not very expensive. I would probably buy new ones just so I wasn't worrying about it.
