I am a little bit of a clean freak around my house and when we built our home 2.5 years ago I thought wood floors would be so easy to keep clean. Boy was I wrong! I have tried many different products on our wood floors and then we started having issues with spacing between the boards and warping so I contacted the place where the wood was purchased and bought a cleaning product to usefrom them. It seems to make them look nice but it does not disinfect...is that wierd? I called and they acted dumb that no one has ever asked that before. I have a 11 mo old who is all over the floors and it grosses me out. Any ideas? Thanks!

What can I do next?

Well I've lived in a home for the past 11 years on hardwoods. Sounds like you should have chose different flooring, something not porous. Your cleaning them too much and causing damage to them. Getting hardwoods wet is always a bad idea. If you have to do it only do it on occasion not regularly.
You should have another baby, that will break you of being so "cootie" paranoid problem ")
Sorry I'm not much help about disinfecting your floors. I suppose if I did anything I would go with the vinegar and water route as someone else suggested. Spray lightly and mop up quickly. You'll want to use something natural as chemicals are not good for baby to be crawling around on.

I have a natural cleaner I use and love, but it does not disinfect. I do not believe in disinfecting the floors on a regular basis........only if there were a nasty accident. In my mind the dirt on the floors is healthier for your baby than a chemical disinfectant. Do a little research, or if you like i can send you a link to a video, but the chemicals in cleaning products are often not safe, especially for children.

There was an article in I believe the NY Times a few months ago that over disinfecting can actually harm your child. There are natural bacteria and germs your child should be exposed to, this is to build up immunities etc. If they are so "germ" free the dr in the article said you are setting them up for big problems when they start to socialize with other children and go to school. More upper respatory issues as well as more allergies. If I actually find this article I will send it to you. Just keep the floors clean and don't worry about the disinfecting and I agree with past poster you are cleaning too much and damaging your floors.

I use a good dust mop and a spray bottle of vinegar and water when they are dirty for the spots but you aren't suppose to put any cleaner on the entire floor.
