Cleaning "Stinky" Lovey

My son has one of those small blankets with an animals head on it,a rabbit. He loves to suck on the ears instead of his thumb or a pacifier. My problem is it stinks. I wash it 2-3 times a week and also got him a second one so we rotate every few days. I soak it in baking soda and make sure it's completely dry but the first time it goes in the mouth and gets wet, yuck....! Anyone have any tips on how to remove the odor. No chance of getting this thing away from him anytime soon. I try not to give it too him too often, only for naps and sleep or if he is really cranky (teeth coming in). I'd appreciate any help. Thanks

What can I do next?

My daughter has two with bunny heads as well for rotation. I wash them with her clothes on the delicate cycle using a detergent that is free of dyes and scents and all that, and then let it air dry until it is almost dry when I put it in the dryer for a few minutes. It stays soft and fluffy, but also smells wonderful. Don't know if you have tried this and it hasn't worked. Hope it helps!!

I throw my son's beloved right in the machine HOT water, color safe clorox & fabric softner. Works well. The clorox really does the trick!

if it's something you're concerned about getting messed up in the washing machine... you could put it in a pillowcase to protect it, then in the washing machine

My Daughter Grace has a little bunny, mimi, that she used to suck on the ears of. We bought about 10 and rotated and cleaned them often. I still buy new ones from time to time, she loves the new ones better then the old stinky ones. To get them clean I just wash them with my whites and add bleach. That seemed to help. Good luck.

I just read an article about cleaning "stinky socks." I'm sure it would help your "stinky lovey." It said to wash as usual and THEN rinse with one cup white vinegar and one gallon water. Let sit for 30 minutes and then squeeze out moisture and air dry.

Good Luck,
E.

Can you possibly bleach it? Even if it is not white sometimes a little bleach helps. I've bleached many things and they haven't lost they're color. Just make sure to not use too much, dilute it well before adding to wash so there are no "bleach stains", and you might want to run an extra rinse cycle to make sure all the bleach is out. Good luck!

Ah, yes the stinkey lovey...we know it well. My 3 year old daughter has one with a bear head. Appropriately named "Stink Bear" LOL She would never accept a replacement so we wash it now and then either by hand or in the machine with dye free, chemical free etc. detergent. Be very careful if you decide to use bleach if they are sucking on this lovey. Bleach is a carcinogen (toxic) and even the residue can be dangerous. I will have to try the vinegar next time.
