Chronic Sinusitis

My son has been diagnosed with sinusitis so many times in his six years of life. He's been through allergy testing, asthma testing, he's had 2 sinus scans which came back ok, he's had his adnoids out and tubes put in his ears. He's been on several antibiotics on and off. Now his ENT wants to do blood tests to see if there's an antibody diffeciency. Has anyone else had this problem? Any suggestions?

What can I do next?

I would definitely get a second opinion from a pediatric otolaryngologist. Some of the best ones are at Georgetown, but I would get a second opinion for sure - the blood tests are still good to rule out any problems chemically, but he may just have chronic sinus disease and need surgery to include formally cleaning out the sinuses and then putting him on maintenance sinus rinses.

I'm just going to throw this out there...

A friend of mine lived with sinus infections his whole life (we are in our 30s). He tried EVERYTHING. Finally, as a last resort, he started seeing an acupuncturist last fall. This is the first winter in his life he hasn't had a sinus infection. He no longer deals with chronic stuffiness and has weaned himself off the allergy shots. It might be something to think about. I know I have found great relief in various alternative therapies when the mainstream allopathic treatments didn't work.

Hi J.,

Yes I've gone through this with my son. All the meds and specialists and tests.NOTHING was working and I did not want to have has adnoids/tonsills out or have tubes put in his ears. He had hernia surgery at 1 and a half and suffered sleep terrors ever since. So, since I work in a complementary
/alternative health profession I started doing some research and asking around. Here is what worked for us.

I started taking my son to my chiropractor and for craniosacral therapy, and cut most processed foods from his diet (he still gets a happy meal once a week or so) but we eat very healthy at home about half organic but NOT vegetarian. Plus he takes a probiotic supplement from Nature's plus (Animal Parade) to counteract all the antibiotics he was on that killed off all the good bacteria in his system. (Which I believe really contributes to the chronic nature of these things.) He takes a chewable wholefoods multi and vit C as well and has NOT had a sinus infection now for 6 months. Not even a cold.

This is just our experience. His doctor is so impressed with his improvement she asked me where she can refer her other patients who show no improvement with typical treatment.

I hope you find something that helps your son.

Hi J., I don't know if you have a upper cervical chiropractic specialist in your town, but they are great for helping children with sinus, ear, asthma and allergies. My grandson was facing ear tubes at 18 months, but after several adjustments he has been off antibotics and his ears have cleared up. I would try this next before any thing drastic.Too many antibotics depletes the immune system anyway.
Good Luck,
J. W.
